Virgil Donati playing backing tracks to Planet X's song "Kingdom of Dreams" from their 2007 record "Quantum" at drum clinic in Manchester, Connecticut. December 2009. www.virgildonati.com www.xplanetx.com
Like my drum teacher told me: "After seeing and hearing Virgil play you are faced with a decision. Either give up drumming all together or dedicate all your motivation and energy to try and obtain a fraction of the skill and musicianship Virgil possesses.".
A short dissertation of Virgil's playing style: step one: play a simple-ish beat step two: suddenly decide that youre bored and choose a new time signature to play in without alerting the rest of the band step three: magically rejoin the rest of the band perfectly on the down beat as if nothing happened
SmartyThe Pants well Austin better keep figuring. I still wouldn’t go that far even if some too pros would. There is always somebody out there better. How they say, “There is a butcher for every cow.”
Here I am. 6 years after this video is released and it still gets my jaw wide open. Virgil, sir, you have achieved something beyond godlike in your metrics and stick control. As a drummer, I hail you.
3:34 Is very crazy how much Virgil can sound clean, powerful and beautiful at the same time, look at this fucking drummer making me feeling emotional hahaha
Yet another amazing pearl kit and his best performance I think Mr Virgil coming back home he's just out playing with other toys but the drummer's that leave pearl always make it back home because there's nothing like home expessualy those drummer's who started on pearl and made it big time because of pearl they will be back home soon pearl the best reason why I play drums 💪 🥁
Started out on Premier , followed by Ludwig . Then Rogers. Then Simmons. I now own three Pearl kits on two continents. I am a Pearl Driver. Nothing compares to their bite and beauty , and overall inyourfaceness..
Virgil Donati !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Incredible-fantastic-superlative drummer , one of the best , surely one of the my favourite ( Dave Weckl and Steve Smith , too !!!!!!!!! ) . I ' ve seen Virgil Donati playing in Roma with Billy Sheehan and Tony McAlpine : simply wonderful ! A great musician ! About Dream theater session , i have my personal opinion ( we can discuss , eventually ) : Virgil Donati is too important drummer for Petrucci and Co. , his personality too big and strong for this band
@isaacleedrums Well i have to say for me m-audio ie-30 is the best choice for acoustic drummers. you have a reduce of 27db. But you´ve still everything transparent in clear. For the best decission i´ve ever do. and remember i have also the ue-4 from ultimate ears. For live drumming not a good choice:)
What are all those round things he keeps hitting? Is he mad at them? And those metal plates. Isn't he scared he'll break them? What'll they serve the pizza on? Bad dude.
It's you. Part of Virgil's style is to take people by surprise with unusual gaps, micro delays and anticipations, which add tension to his playing. He is one of the best drummers the world has seen.
On the other hand Virgil can play whatever he wants.Virgil can play 4 time signatures all at once with proper accents and feel. It's like Chick Corea is the master of jazz/fusion keyboards and composition and Donati is to the drums.
Listen people dream theater got the right drummer for them. Mike mangini is perfect fit for them. The selection they made had nothing to do with the caliber of talent. Virgil donation and Marco minnimann are both 2 of the greatest drummers on the planet. They are not styled for that band. It is no way an insult to either one of them. One more thing their is no greatest drummer only dumbasses who think there are
11/16?I was raised with odd signature music.I am Bulgarian and we have insane amount of variety of time signatures and phrasing in our music.11/16 7/8 3/4 9/8 in every shape or form you can think of is played in our Bulgarian folk music.Just do me a favor type this into youtube and watch the video "Ivo Papasov on Nightmusic".

I checked it out and it is amazing. I know your comment is 5 years old, but I'm commenting in 2017 regardless. Ivo is unbelievable.
Virgil Donati easily can be called the greatest drummer of all time. This is real progressive drumming of world class. Not like the losers in dream theater were they play different note groupings and call it "different time signature".I know why there is so many fools out there because few people have the desire to educate and listen to 4-5 bands and have no idea what really monster players are out there like Planet X or Allan Holdsworth.
Virgil is a fantastic drummer but I get bored of this stuff after awhile. The music side of it is the same old thing he has been doing for years. He is a great drummer though no doubt about that. I like watching him play simpler stuff with a good front man at the helm.
Man if you cannot see how many miles ahead Donati is from portnoy then there is no need for us to talk.If you can't see that you are too far gone and no one can bring you back.
Virgil didn't try anything. They knew him and they called him up to go over there.Everyone including Mike Portnoy admires Virgil except dream theater fans. This speaks volumes.Virgil Donati played with the greats of our time Allan Holdsworth and Chick Corea. The only way mike portnoy can get that gig is as drum tech to carry the drums for Virgil.
I don't know man...their keyboard player seems to be good but their guitar player plays too fast all the time without any thought into his solos.I have heard some songs that i enjoy but most of it has no accents or to say has 4/4 accents on 7/8 count. You can put 7 notes together but if they have 4/4 accents and you just cut 1 8th note out it's still 4/4 time signature. They should have stayed at berkley to finish their education and they would have learned how to play properly.
Father of what current prog-rock drums?First of all DT's music is questionable.Second of all there isn't a REALLY good new rock band in more than 25 years. So not so good band being an influence on other worse bands.Half of fame is a joke.If fame mean something then madona is the greatest singer.
