The thumbnail conveys the wrong message. Virgin brass is usually loose and sloppy. Fireformed brass is tight and snug.

DD, great video. Im still learning as much as possible. New to reloading bought my press right in the middle of the pandemic been gathering what little primers and powder I could ever since. Ive only reloaded for my 300 WSM so far. Been very happy so far my reloads are shooting slightly better than the best factory load I have found in the last 20 years (got my 300 right after they were released). Anyhow I really appreciate you sharing your Knowledge. Your videos are some of the best out there ! On another topic I watched your video concerning riflescopes . I did go with a VX5 3-15-44 after endless research. You were the only one who brought up the negatives on that scope . I know after watching your video that scope is definitely not perfect. But I thought it was the best option as I mainly hunt cues deer in the desert and am pretty good at babying my rifle along the way. Keep up the great work ,And Enjoy some hunting along the Way !!

In service sniper rifles are issued with 200 rounds of ammo that is fire formed for that chamber when the shooter gets low on ammo he'll turn the rifle in for another

Superb thumbnail! 😝 Good topic too. Maybe you said it at the beginning, but most of this only applies to bolt action and single action rifles. Many semiauto rifles (a) extract brass before it has a chance to spring back and (b) need smaller brass to ensure reliable operation.

Great video DD. The brass issue is the ONLY reason I haven't picked up a 6.8 Western. I think the cartridge is a fantastic one but unless someone other than Winchester starts making brass/ammo I won't buy one

I’m not going to say Winchester brass is the top tier, but I have loaded a lot of once and twice fired Winchester, for my 270 over the years. It’s perfectly fine. Do I prefer Norma, Nosler (which sometimes is Norma) or Lapua? Yes I do. But I’m not using the Winchester brass for competitive events. Winchester/Browning ammo sucks, but I think it’s the poor manufacturing process.

Thank you for all of your invaluable teaching. I have learned so much from you that I put into practice and find very effective. You have a wealth of experience and that unusual quality of being able to impart wisdom. I have a couple of brass related questions. 1. After how many firings do you anneal? Or is it variable depending on calibers or other factors? I think I recall a camp mail at some point that you anneal after 3 firings but somewhere here else, perhaps for a larger calibers, after each firing ? 2. I believe in a previous camp mail you mentioned that you head space off the shoulder for 375 H&H belted mag. In this video your mentioned at least some calibers are head spaced off the belt. Would you head space off the shoulder for 416 rm and 300 win mag as well ?

Virgin brass is Identical to factory Ammo loaded brass. If your Gun likes factory ammo, your gun will like Virgin brass reloads(If you do it right), Most reloaders will Full size brass. So its back to factory/virgin brass dimentions. I will just clean and neck size my brass IF, IF they chamber easily for feeding reliabillity. With Belted cartridges, Shoulder bump, Not Full size. for longevity. Great advice. Thanks DD
@desertdogoutdoors1113

@@WillyK51 Virgin brass is so undersized, that even after FL resizing making contact with a standard shell-holder, the brass will be noticeably larger. Measure it and see for yourself! Your brass will never be as small as it was when it was new.

Mr Dog when do you start Annealing? After how many rounds. I usaull start pretty early like 4 to 5 shots. Use the Annealing made easy the new digital. A safer way the using torches. Great video with lots of must know info if accuracy is important. CW
@desertdogoutdoors1113
@desertdogoutdoors1113 19 дней назад
@@cwness4587 for my precision ammo, I anneal after every firing for consistent brass spring-back and neck tension. For some hunting and plinking loads, I might anneal every 4 firings.

Great Video, I think your spot on I am setting here thinking and researching a Load for my son in-laws 7mm Rem Mag. I have 100 ea. Hornady virgin brass trying to think how I can fire form brass on the cheap trying to save components. I am thinking of doing 2 box's per bullet having 2 different bullets to work with. We will see I am leaning on doing a ladder test over chronograph find the sweet spot then load to that and put on paper for him. I have not even seen the gun yet. Thank for a great Saturday for me it is like watching cartoons as a kid.

I reload 357 mag and 44 mag. I do not worry about OCD brass prep on handgun loads. I load the virgin cases exactly the same as fired cases. Rifle ammo is an entirely different animal.

Been using all kinds of brass cept lapua.like nosler but use my cranky winchester stuff Remington like fed when volume not an issue. Trying to make Once Fired headspace in belted 338 is interesting. but not interesting in MY 300w cause that chamber is 10.000 longer yet. I want use shoulder head space right under beltheadspace. Whats a good setup for that? Custom die.?

To load for accuracy you need to set size die to "bump the shoulder back .002-.003" ?????
@jasonshults368
@jasonshults368 20 дней назад
There is plenty of disagreement, but this is the current consensus. As is annealing after every firing. I use collet neck dies and anneal every 4th or 5th firing. Works well for me.

@@jasonshults368 Thanks for the reply. I mimic your routine except for two older military rifles that need fl sizing to be happy. To each their own but obvious cause of head separations shown, not the belt.

Not necessarily. To automatically take fired cases, let's say once fired, and FL size them and bump the shoulder 0.002 or 3 could be sizing too much. You may be well aware of this. I don't know. For example. I took a new Tikka 270 Winchester to the range to get some rounds through it. I shot 3 boxes of factory ammo I got on clearance at 6.99/box - Winchester stuff. When I got home I rechambered all the cases and they did so easily just as they did when virgin. Thus, I neck sized only with a bushing, reducing to 0.003 less than a loaded round, then used the expander mandrel which opens the neck to 0.002 less than a loaded round. Then trimmed all to a uniform length. I then rechambered all again and all fit easily. As such, there was no need to FL size at all and I didn't have the extra steps of lubing, FL sizing, cleaning the lube off. I loaded 150 grain Nosler ABs over a full case of H4831SC after testing OCW. The neck sized test loads never shot over 3/4" group regardless of powder charge. I then tested two 3 shot groups at the desired max powder charge with more of the 1x fired cases for confirmation and it made one hole about 0.222. Then I went through the same process and reloaded those so I'd have 60 rounds total for hunting season. Only 1 of the 2x fired cases was slightly snug when closing the bolt. That one will need to be FL sized after it is fired.
