I remember that plantation when we visited St. John years ago. We were staying on St. Thomas but took the ferry over to St. John for the day and rented a car. I remember the views from the plantation of the BVI were spectacular. The ranger mentions the king of Dahomey and how they would capture Africans to sell as slaves. Ironically there's just been a movie released The Woman King about a woman king who helped protect the kingdom of Dahomey. It's stirred up controversy because evidently it portrays them in a positive light and doesn't tell about how they contributed to the slave trade. Thank you for another wonderful video. Brought back some wonderful memories of my trip to the St. Thomas and St. John years ago. I also remember snorkeling the snorkel trail in Trunk Bay. What a wonderful experience.

You're 100% right Randy about the full teaching of history. We need the black eyes as well as the triumphs to fully understand where we've come to learn those important lessons. Trying to sensationalize the bad things only hurts the situations even more. You hit a gold mine with a great volunteer. They are truly some of the heroes of our national park system!

I really enjoyed your discussion with the guide who gave us a history lesson and your discussion with your audience that followed. You were spot on! Thank you for saying it. I agree, tell history as it really happened, unfiltered, unvarnished and unrevised. I replayed those clips several times, just to let them sink in. May God bless you, your family and this great nation.

We’ve learned so much factual history from the NPS units. I feel like they always do an amazing job of presenting both sides of a story in a way that’s doesn’t lead you toward one side or the other. Just true facts. Neutral and true.

Randy, I've driven on the left in Northern Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, but that was all with the steering wheel switched over to the right side. Was it a bit of an adjustment driving a mainland US-built car on the left? At least, in many places it appears the road was only a car width anyway. I appreciated your thoughts on history, and I agree wholeheartedly. Did any of the food you ate happen to be from a local cuisine, and if so, what's it like?
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 3 года назад
Yeah, never really acclimated to driving on the left. Told my wife to keep reminding me and tried to make it a continual conscience decision. As for the food, we didn't tray anything too much out of the ordinary. Take care!

I really appreciate this video, especially as a Jamaican native living in the States and knowing some of JA’s history under British slave masters. Sometimes, I think there’s so much history, people just take a bit of it and pass that story on. (Like, the worst part of the story is what is exciting enough to share, and so it’s what’s shared most? I don’t know). I can completely see why emancipated slaves would stick around. Maybe there aren’t enough records supporting those stories.

Very interesting video Randy. Thank you for presenting the unbiased history of the island and nice commentary on the subject of history as well. In general, was it pretty easy getting around the island? Do you recall how long it may have taken you going front the west to east side of the island or vice versa?
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 3 года назад
Hey Michael, yes, we were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to visit St. John. Only a 4 hour direct flight from NJ. Once we had the rental, no problem getting around. The island is very small (9x5 miles), but the max speed limit was only 35 MPH with a lot of hills.

You little criminals you! Hahaha! We have done the same thing before, so we can’t say anything, lol. I think you’re right about history. It’s important to understand history. It may be hard to face at times, but in order to understand how NOT to do something you have to understand what happened before. I also think you’re right, about history being manipulated and the truth is not exactly what we’re taught. That doesn’t help anyone either. Interesting topics on your first full days of the trip!
