Estelle Paranque is the author of a groundbreaking new dual-biography of Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici, powerful contemporaries one of which took her power from being a virgin, the other from being a mother. We talk about Catherine de Medici's tragic but fascinating life and the relationship between her and England's Queen, Elizabeth I.

Last and most important part of my research the book ground breaking new dual which is biography of queen Elizabeth 1 and Catherine de Medici queen of French from 1547 until she died in 1589 while Elizabeth 1 queen of England since 1558 till 1603 although both were powerful monarchs in their own right they never met each other in person because they lived bin different countries.

At last an official historian challenging the romantic image of Mary Queen of Scots. Good luck Estelle, you will need it, in our regressive era where I'm sure every member of academia is under pressure to cling to the traditional nation state narrative. It takes courage to re-frame powerful women's histories in our dark times.

If only we knew what people from the past were like. Her name has been tainted with evil and somehow it stuck to her. But to what extent is it true? There is no smoke without fire on one hand and on the other, it is so cruel to be maligned to the nth degree. I can't make up my mind about Catherine. There's also Maria de Medici, ( a niece of hers) who married Henri of Navarre and became queen of France. She was not much liked either.

Personally, for about 3/4 of the way through the podcast I honest to God thought that Dr Paranque was drunk !!! That's the only thing to me that would explain her language being used as such especially coming from an academic, on a public platform, talking about a published work. Just my opinion. Call me a prude. However, yes I too, was kind of taken aback by her use of language.

Really enjoyable although at times some of the language used by Dr Paranque was appalling. Surprised she wasn't gently asked to moderate it.

Yes, I too thought the very same thing about Dr Paranque's 'colorful' use of language. Honestly me personally I was thinking that for the first three quarters of the way through the discussion I honestly thought Dr Peranque was drunk when she was doing this interview. In the back of my mind I'm thinking: 'surely, this is not a published author using such language while she's being interviewed' and she's discussing one of her published works. Yes I too would have hoped she would tow the line when it came to her language considering the fact that she's hoping many people will buy her book!! Boy was I wrong 😮. Enjoyable, thought-provoking talk nonetheless. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. My biggest takeaway however is that it's okay to challenge popularly , once held beliefs as long as you have the details and justification to prove it and or to stand beside your word.
