Virginia wins first NCAA basketball championship in epic comeback

The University of Virginia has produced famous senators, business leaders, and journalists, but never an NCAA basketball champion - until now. Virginia is No. 1 after beating Texas Tech Monday night, 85 to 77 in overtime. It's an extraordinary turnaround after one of the most famous defeats in March Madness history a year ago. Dana Jacobson reports.

They accomplished what those Ralph Sampson led teams of the early 80s didn't do, the 35 year wait is over, NCAA BB CHAMPS 2019!!

What a game for sure in the top 10 that story for Virginia can be put to rest who knew it take lose in to a 16 seed to get were they are this wow first championship never forget.

@@mickfunny4185 , it really amazes me ,that players who are NCAA Championship stars ,tend to fade away quickly in the NBA ; I know,that they are so many of them,whose careers fizzled out so quickly in the NBA .

@@sidibouchrit Hunter was drafted 4th overall and recently signed a $90M contract extension. Jerome was traded from OKC to Houston, released, and now plays for the Warriors G League affiliate, and Guy has played a total of 53 NBA games, he’s now in the EuroLeague. A player all 3 faced in the 2019 title game, Jarret Culver, was drafted 6th overall in 2019, played just TWO seasons in Minnesota before being traded to Memphis, where he was primarily a G League player. He’s now on the Atlanta Hawks G League affiliate, and I don’t see him returning to the NBA.

@@mickfunny4185 , Nice relevant information; So you are saying out of the four stars of the 2019 NCAA basketball championship game, only one (hunter) made it in the NBA (a 25% rate, which is more or less the norm);

@@mickfunny4185 Jerome's chances have upgraded over the past 2 mos., so jury's still out on him. Also it should be noted that Guy's a solid sixth man on one of the best teams in the Spanish League, which is the top league in Europe.

NCAA sports have always had corruption from paid players to grade changes, but for them to rig this championship is on par with the NFL. Many of our politicians are involved with UVA on way or another, so in order to keep that money rolling in the NCAA had to fix the embarrassment from the previous season. Virginia will ALWAYS be the #1 seed that lost to a #16 seed - that is a fact. If the brackets weren’t rigged, then why wasn’t Michigan State the #2 in Virginia’s section instead of Duke’s. And the non calls in Virginia’s favor were blatant. Only in Virginia does this championship mean anything. No where else.

Sum Ego UMBC was clearly the better team on the night that they defeated UVA in last year’s tournament. The “one and done” format makes it possible for any team to win, regardless of ranking or talent. The format forces a team to confront adversity head-on in real time. There were clear examples of this in each of the last three games that UVA played in this tournament. In each moment when they could have failed to execute they made a successful basketball play. Their coach has said that their success this year was due to last year’s loss to UMBC. This success was described by one opposing coach as “mental toughness”. Who knows what this actually means, but to suggest that somehow the outcome for this year’s tournament was rigged in UVA’s favor by corrupt politicians is like a dog howling at the moon: just noise.

I forgot to add point shaving to the list of corruptions. Hey, it is very plausible that what I wrote happened. Michigan State, Michigan and Kentucky were #2’s BUT not in Virginia’s bracket. It happened, Virginia’s championship was rigged in hopes of forgetting the loss to a 16 seed.
