In this tutorial I give you all a little feel of what goes in to my mixes. Keep in mind this is only one aspect of Virtual DJ. Beatmatching and looping is important in getting a good sound for your mix, however to make a full mix, you need to remember to focus on transitioning, flangering/effects, waves and scratching.
This video covers to basics to syncing and beatmatching on Virtual DJ.
I don't own any music used in this tutorial. I simply mixed it.
Songs used:
Steve Aoki & Laidback Luke ft. Lil Jon - Turbulence
Ali Nadem - Electro Gladiators v2
CZR - Structure
Muse - Uprising
Enjoy!

Just a tip, DJ to DJ, stay away from that Sync button! It's easier not to touch it when using a controller or CDJS, but still. Beatmatching by ear is a lot more professional and it builds a lot more skill. I'm not trying to bring you down. You definitely have potential. When I try using loops, it's a nightmare. But just keep doing what you're doing. Pretty impressed after only four months of mixing. I've been in the game for two years and I'm still learning. So keep at it, see if you can't practice beatmatching my ear, and have fun with it! -DJKuruption

Arron Hoffman I agree, however a good way to learn beatmatching is to start with sync button and counting beats, then to using the displayed bpm, and your pitch fader, then eventually use your ears.

Arron Hoffman wow man i 'm trying to do it with my ear but thats super hard to me. I love this sync button actually.

Good point. Everyone has their own style that makes their DJing unique, even the most advanced DJs (with their fancy Serato/Tracktor) can learn a thing or two by watching amateurs and observing the techniques they use.

You're right in the fact that the sync button makes a DJ's job easier, and using only software to mix doesn't make you a "real" DJ, but I feel it's almost required to have a good ear for the music you play in order to be a good DJ. I shouldn't have to state the fact that DJs MUST be able to match up songs by ear and transition them in a way that makes their mix seem like one big song.

Interesting! I have zero background in this sorta thing and this was very helpful.
@roycharman5736
@roycharman5736 11 лет назад
sweet thanks :) not sure if you want to but mapping virtual dj to map to your keyboard helps beginners like I've mapped the arrow keys to slowly controll the cross fader left or right then CTRL left and right to slam the cross fader straight left and straight right then I use the key bored to up and down the bass the alt key to sync and the numbers for loops and ctrl numbers to set cue's the F buttons to play them! it makes it so much easier and it makes it easy! you should do a tutorial on it
@thehouserocker
@thehouserocker 12 лет назад
It's best is because sometimes the "sync" button doesn't always work perfectly, if you learn to do it manually then those times where tracks don't sync correctly you'll be able to hear it instantly and know exactly if you should pitch up or down to align your songs, software makes our job easier because it does for us what we used to do manually by ear, therefore by training yourself the traditional way you'll become much better because you'll understand what's going on at all times
@Flygon11
@Flygon11 13 лет назад
@HailSagan4Realz The ideal blend is to have the 4th notes playing over each other. If you miss on your timing, make sure you have the volume down or have headphones, and hit the sync button. The sync button automatically matches the beats so you don't HAVE to be precise. Once the beats are matched and sound good together, feel free to bring in the next song, and/or (while) slowly fading the other song out.

That's 100% true, but in this case, the Sync button is there. But the craft is still present in that just hitting sync and playing doesn't always sound good. It's still up to the DJ's ear to make sure everything flows and sounds good.
@thehouserocker
@thehouserocker 12 лет назад
To all the beginners, do not use the "sync" button to match your BPM's, instead try to match your next tracks BPM by moving the pitch slider up and down until you hear that the kicks on both songs are hitting at about the same time, then go about cueing it up where you want and blending it in, fine tuning of BPM's can be done on the fly as they're playing, Oh wait I just described how real Dj's do it never mind!
@KungFuMcGrew
@KungFuMcGrew 12 лет назад
Im not gonna lie, i didnt have a clue what i was talking about 3 days ago and have done a lot of reading up since then. I agree with you totally. But theres nothing wrong with the sync button in the right situation i would say. But beatmatching is not hard so its worth learning
@Flygon11
@Flygon11 13 лет назад
@kpsuk You're completely right. However while it's by far not the most popular, VDJ is used by quite a few DJs here in the States since a lot of Traktor and Serato products are easier to get in Canada or other countries. I'm currently saving for Serato scratch and a nice Pioneer CDJ myself, but Virtual DJ is definitely what you should use to learn the ropes, but even with the Pro version there's a limit to how much you can accomplish with it as far as mixing goes.
@Flygon11
@Flygon11 12 лет назад
@tarujivan DJing is blending songs of same or similar tempo. You can't match those two songs without drastically speeding up or slowing down one or the other. The only way to blend two songs of different tempos is simply to be creative and make the offset BPMs as subtle as possible.

Simply right-click on one of the hot cue buttons at the point in the song that you want to set as your hot cue. The cue marker will re-place itself if it has already been set.

This works too! But the limited precision of Virtual DJ makes this technique too tedious, so it's best to stick with using the sync button or manually matching the beats and avoid playing with the pitch on such a limited program.

@Skwakt You need to use your own music. If you have the paid version you can use the Genius DJ Feature which is basically a library of Popular Dance Music, however if you have the free version like me you can only play 30 seconds of each song. Simply put, you need to use your own music from your computer, not the music Virtual DJ offers.
@Flygon11
@Flygon11 12 лет назад
@209eflores Having hardware is a great start, and having Virtual DJ doesn't eliminate your need for having turntables, Virtual DJ is merely to enhance hardware like turntables. If you don't know what you're doing, try to find a tutorial on the particular type of turntable you have on RU-vid, or, watch this video and experiment with Virtual DJ. I'd highly recommend you have this program first, especially if you're a beginner.

@yougottabekiddingbro My mentor for DJing is my brother. He's 38 years old and started DJing when he was 14 by playing casette tapes on a mixer. He was around for the Chicago House scene, he's played on B96 in the city, and has been DJing since the beginning. Trust me, I know what you mean, and sometimes I feel that I'm not actually "doing" anything because the program is helping me. But it helps me to remember that I'm being taught by someone who truly made an art form out it - without programs

True. It is impressive and I have alot of respect for DJs like him. But as you can probably tell by the lack of gig-logs on my channel, and the absence of "DJ 0M9H4X" at Tomorrowland this year, I prefer to press play (and sync) rather than spending thousands of dollars on equipment and hours on practicing. A friend of mine refuses to use anything but vinyl. Because he's a pro? No, because he's a hipster. EZ-Mode VDJ is my way to go, peace.

@0M9H4X and houserocker You both have your own personal opinions on the qualities and fundamentals involved in DJing, and neither of you are incorrect. In the modern world, there isn't one true definition of the qualities a DJ needs to possess to be a DJ. Different DJs come with different sets of talents and different styles of play. Truely, a DJ is just what it stands for: A Disc Jockey. If you can play music and make people dance, you can be considered a DJ. Anything beyond that is opinion.

I'm all for technology but if you're an up and comer and you solely rely on the sync function to tell your story then you're depriving yourself of learning the basic aspect of the craft. What happens when you play out on a rig that doesn't have a sync function???

@bubtube21 And 'real' DJs wont be using Virtual DJ either. This is a good way to learn the basic and get into mixing and using the 'features' available to help you. When you get better, you stop using the Sync and start doing it yourself, then you can get onto the real decks and take what you've learnt to the club. That's my take on it anyway.

Unfortunetly, because you don't have hardware (CDJs or TTs), don't try and learn to beatmatch on VDJ when there's a sync button. Yeah, there's a pitch slider in VDJ but you also can't nudge or speed up decks with a mouse like you can with your hands on a CDJ or TT. Once you get hardware, you can then try to beatmatch for real.

honestly i have just started using virtual Dj and i find that syncing is much faster, it moves the pitch slider automatically, whats the point in doin it yourself? when you sync the pitch slider moves to the equalized bpm then if you want to change the pitch just change the Key knob, to match the key of the original pitch,
