Pioneered during production on the Mandalorian, Virtual Production screens, known as 'volumes' are a revolutionary filmmaking tool when combined with 3D gaming engines like Unreal, that can produce incredible results. Originally screened for the the 2022 FMX Convention in Stuttgart, Tommy and JP spent 3 days experimenting with miniature photography on a VP volume, in an effort to take this new technology to new and exciting places.

I love that virtual production is bringing back the nice CG/practical blend we had in the late 90s, before everyone went CG crazy. I think mixing both works wonders.

It’s that natural aversion to double negatives that gets people all the time. It’s like how I used to always think the correct phrase was “a good movie suspends your belief” because my brain wouldn’t do the math to realize that “disbelief” and “suspend” cancel each other out to result in “belief”.

I say this every video but this is the coolest one yet. I am not a film maker. I'm just a fan of movies and learning how they're made. But you were tickling _my_ brain with ideas. I've seen the BTS of The Mandalorian and I just assumed volume tech is something only a big studio could ever do. But then you mentioned projectors. What a great idea. I am quite the computer geek so I've tinkered with Unreal. So by the end of the video, I had this home brew volume in my head using a projector, 3D printed models, and a home made motion control rig made of an Arduino and some small motors with my cell phone mounted on it to shoot the video. I have no idea if that's possible but I really want to try it. Great video, as always.

Quick thing on language. I know film makers are talking about volumes, but these sort of spaces have existed in VR for decades just not using the LED panels from outdoor advertising. In VR they are known as Caves! A classic example was the connection between Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre & EuroParc in Cambridge UK where two semi-circles were connected to make a virtual connection space. The sort of thing we do everyday with a Zoom /Skype call As opposed to Head Mounted Displays AKA VR Goggles that were first publiced by VPL's eyePhone (when Apple brought out the iPhone as opposed to the iCell I was very confused)

I find it interesting how technological advancements makes all these different techniques converge and you can go full circle in different ways. They all become part of one big giant sandbox. You could build models in 3D, then 3D print miniatures of them and use them "practical" or you could build models practically, then 3D scan them and create "digital" 3D environments of them. In the volume and compositing all of it comes together again - the distinction of digital and practical gets very permeable when both can crossover (and come back.)

Fantastic to see technology evolving and just putting more power and creativity into the hands of filmmakers. It allows so much to be accomplished with so much less. I love the idea of VP being used to actually bring back miniatures and make them a more relevant part of film production again. There is just so much room for versatility and innovation. I love the idea of it being used as a tool to potentially make films much more cost-effective without losing a sense of scope or scale.

I wanted to say the idea of using a monitor inside a miniature to replay a photogrammetry correct interior using using metahumans shod in captured actors bodies & faces in Unreal 5 (using similar tools that were used for inside the matrix) all the while shooting the miniature from a "go motion" rig from the outside is amazing!! It gives us the voyeur sense of being there peering into the reality!! Imagine shooting a Rainbow Six: Siege style take down of bad guys using a combination of a. external shots through windows of a monitor intercut with b. photo-realstic multi bounce Ray Traced scenes from within the buildings & c. close ups of the actual actors faces speaking their lines in front of those same monitors. That gives you 3 levels of action (wide, local & close) using 3 types of environments i.e miniature, fully digital & actual analog reality. I bet people would think you actually physically built all the sets & shot it all in reality. I have been 'fooled' by similar tricks before.

I have seen other people on RU-vid around the time of NAB but in a recording made in the UK: outputting the display to a "kinoflow" tubes arrangement but instead using the latest dual LED RGBWW tubes to project the light effects onto the human subjects but without using LED blocks or LCD panels/projectors They then used standard green screen to provide the keying surface - not as good as a mandallorian type space but substantially cheaper. The key point is that the mandalorian used open source software to create its tracking tools combined with Unreal engine. It might now be being sold as proprietary big ticket items by some people but the original work is as far as I know still up to be forked on git hub.
@InCameraTV
@InCameraTV 2 года назад
ILM did initially work with Epic (Unreal) to develop the tech but they didn't want to be reliant on another companies software/development so they developed their own engine called Stagecraft. But yes, Unreal is available to all to use in this way, whether it be a live-key green screen setup or even using projectors!

Awesome! I'm old enough to remember when green screen was blue screen! Now it's all happening live.
@TryptychUK

Blue screens were used because the mattes were created using a photographic process. Green is preferred in digital because the channel has more contrast and less noise. It also does not need to be so heavily lit.
@VictoryWorks

@@TryptychUK That's interesting. They didn't use digital in 1983 though surely?

@@VictoryWorks In that case, there were probably other considerations like having blue in the foreground colours. Digital will use blue when there is a lot of green like foliage etc. Matte screens have been other colours too, Disney used to use sodium yellow, and I've also seen magenta and red mattes.

Now do one where the client asks you to change it to night time after it's already shot at midday... because that is unfortunately, often the reality. Nobody sticks with the backgrounds, or even the location they shot on set once they get to post production. Unless they don't have money. If they have money, they're making the movie in the edit suite, and you'll be rotoing everything and replacing the backgrounds with stuff that just does not work with the foregrounds.

This new tech is cool but I think green screens done well still look better. Maybe in the future this type of tech will surpass it in quality. The other thing is that a green screen shot can have an infinite number of backgrounds edited into the shot where as if there's already an image in the background you're kind of stuck if you want to do something different later.
@TryptychUK
@TryptychUK 2 года назад
Stuff like this might be cool for the likes of ILM, but the costs are prohibitive, and it will be a long time before it gets to a point where us mere mortals can afford it. And it's exacerbated by the fact that models require small camera apertures makes it even worse, as those screens simply don't kick out enough light. As a thought, regarding sharp definition on your sub set, have you considered doing a Z-Depth pass? You could fake a narrow DoF whilst keeping your hero sharp. If you used bright lights at the front of the set, and then in post adjusted the levels to get an even dynamic range, you could then apply that to a blur layer, so everything brightly lit was sharp, fading off to the dark areas blurred in the distance.

It would be interesting to see if you could do miniature FX with this setup - then you would need high speed. The advantage of VP does seem to be integrating with actors - if you are building a whole background in the computer, also doing foreground objects isn't a big deal. Very interesting to see you try this out anyway - it looks great!

Some people have said that InCamera's videos remind them of the classic television series "Movie Magic," but that's not really a valid comparison. "Movie Magic" had Neil Ross narrating in voice over, with no host actually participating in the filming.The best comparison I can think of is: What if Tim Hunkin and Rex Garrod had done "The Secret Life of a Special Effects Studio." I think your output was using a standard added layer type output, as opposed to using a multiple head design using water soluable pla type support structures, but you might had better luck if you had used a stereo lithography based print as whilst more expensive needing a post print washing process its not being used in a context where it needs to have mechanical strength which can be the advantage of additive layer printing Perhaps next time team up with a 3D printing RU-vid channel because your project gives them huge kudos?? as your the 'Movie Biz'

This is so interesting! Would love t otry it sometime, hopefully the tech is getting cheaper and cheaper to a pint all of us ca nafford doing so 🙂One question tho, I don't understand completely, you make a shot wit the green-screen, first is that a greenscreen on the Virtual-screen or a real one? If it is on the Screen, would it not cast a nasty green light on the model? And why would you have agreen-screened version. Then you end up with a model on green-screen and then you have to add a CGi background again. Does not that ruin the whole point? As if you have a green-screen behind, will the light reflections and interactions still show on the model, or will they be blocked by the green-screen. Hope you kind of understood my question. I might just not think clearly now, hehe

Maybe the green screen pass is to have kindof a separation mask for the model, so it can be edited in post separately.

Is it possible to shoot with film cameras on these things?
@tysonq7131
@tysonq7131 2 года назад
Yes. You would need to do experiments with which film would best react to it and also jerry rig a motion tracker to your film camera though. Plus if you wanted to do further digital processing (removing wires) you'd have to scan the film in. So you could, but it would be a lot more work.

Could this be used as a way to project unreal engine backgrounds or live action plates for stop motion? Like rear projection setups? Thanks!
@InCameraTV

Absolutely. Some animation studios are using for just that right now!

A virtual set doesn't seem to make a lot of sense strictly for a model shot when you could build and animate the model in real-time instead. Virtual sets make more sense when there are real actors involved in close-ups and when a virtual actor wouldn't be convincing.

Virtual actors are never convincing 😅 But yes you could well be right. Although in some cases the interactive light provided by the volume can still lend itself to miniatures too. This was really more of an experiment for us. As with all fx it all depends on what the shot requires!

Great job 👌. What led panels you used ? And why didn't you create and render moving objects in 3d and UE? Must it be on set ? Bcuz of focusing marks and camera movements?

The new sub was meant to remind me of a Minion right?

Came here to say that. Kept expecting an "oh, by the way, we call it a subminion" comment.
