A tip ceases to be a tip when it becomes expected. I think the same idea applies to workers. Tips should be a reward for excellent service not an expected part of overall compensation. Pay workers a fair wage and stop relying on customers to contribute directly to their compensation.
The issue is that because of the laws that allow companies to pay less than min wage with the expectation that the difference is made up through tips than it is by default "expected." Companies should not be able to have this bifurcated wage structure. It is a way to pass a hidden cost to customers and increase the bottom line of a company.
@@redtiger7268 That's an issue to be certain, but it isn't the heart of the issue, even in states which require every person to be paid at least minimum wage there's a tipping "problem". There could be a restaurant where wait staff is getting $50/hr, tipping will still be there unless it's some prix fixe setup that specifically says "gratuity already included"
@@Mike__B You show me one restaurant in America where a server is paid $50 an hour and than I'll entertain your hypothetical. You missed my point. The tipping problem is that some restaurants are using it to offset the wages they should be paying. As a result of people getting fed up with tip screens 10%-15% no longer tip ANYWHERE. This has lead to bad service across the board because now even when someone gives perfect service there is a good chance they will not get tipped. Now add that to the tip out that most restaurants REQUIRE. Yes require. At most restaurant as a server you are required to pay the house 5% of the bill to fund the wages of back of the house or traditionally non-tipped (hostess) employees regardless if the table left anything or not.
@@redtiger7268 No, I really didn't miss your point. I stated there are plenty of places where they do not pay less than minimum wage, and tipping is still a problem. And yeah it's exactly for the reasons you mention. It's an entire industry that is latched onto the idea that tipping is a better way to keep their books balanced then actually paying them "enough", places that give less than minimum wage are a problem, but so are places that pay more than minimum wage, and yes those restaurants exist, and they still expect tipping to help them out regardless of service.
Virtual queue needs to go away. If I spend $110 to get in the park And have travelled hundreds of miles, I should assured that I can get in a particular ride.
Disney took an already broken pass holder preview system and made it even more ridiculous, not only do you have to get a park reservation but then you have to take a chance to actually get the virtual queue on the day of, Disney needs to stop with this stuff it’s getting ridiculous, if you have a pass holder preview have a standby line and let people wait end of story simple and it works
Virtual queue guarantees that - they don't have to show a standby wait time of 4+ hours - they don't have to keep the ride running 2+ hours after park close to ensure everyone in line rides (nor do they have to stop queuing before park close) - if there's extended maintenance, they can artificially limit the amount of queues given out at 1pm - Also if there's extended maintenance, they don't have to give out recovery to thousands of people in line (instead only a few hundred) Operations loves it too much to ever give it up.
@@judgesh Don't forget the best part... it allows them to artificially reduce the amount of queue space they release to the general public and then allow you to buy your way in with a single Lightning Lane purchase. Honestly at this point I want to see Disney just give the finger to everyone and say "ONLY paid Lightning Lane will be available for the ride" and those Disney-stans will absolutely buy it up.
It's INSANE that the employees at Gideon's are paid as tipped employees. Sure, tip if you feel like it, when I visited there I had great service from everyone, but that is not a place that I would consider as a normal place to tip. By that I mean something like a sit down restaurant. So to pay them as such is a joke and makes me think very poorly of the Gideon's company (not even considering all of the other issues mentioned). That place makes more than enough money to pay all of the employees a living wage (well beyond $16/hr) yet they found a loophole to only pay them $8 because they can legally get away with it, something all companies can and will do whenever possible. I'm glad you talked about this here to bring attention to it because I wasn't aware of this and I think it's important to bring it more publicity.
100%!!! It sours the entire experience when you find out the people making all the magic at our fav cafes, restaurants, theme parks etc. aren’t making livable wages
The funny thing about all this is that their original location is near downtown Orlando and their employees aren’t apart of this complaint. This is just the Disney Springs employees.
We went to Knotts a few months ago. No phones. It was BLISS. It's how parks SHOULD ALWAYS be. Came to L.A. from Oz and didn't even bother going to Disney. Spent 4 days at Knotts and had a fabulous relaxing time.
Gideons: it’s not a restaurant. Why would they work for tips? It’s a shop. I don’t go to Dunkin’ Donuts and tip the person who hands me the donut that is sitting in the case waiting for me to buy it anymore than I expect to tip the cashier who scans my onions.
I think the management of many places use tips to pay their staff less. I don’t know how it works in Florida, but where I live, if workers get tips, then you can pay well below minimum wage. It might also affect some other things depending on how laws are written.
@@Ratchetfan321I used the same stance with fast food. You don’t tip your McDonalds cashier. And yet, I saw a freaking tip jar at a White Castle!!! I have to wait how long to ask for ketchup because you’re too cheap to leave it out? Subway I had to wait five minutes just to buy bottled drinks. They didn’t make anything for me. I waited so long I almost jumped the counter, because where are the staff? There’s probably just ONE person scheduled that day. And before you say that’s why they need tips, so they can staff it, no. I am not compensating for your failing business. Minimum wage is $7.25/hr, yet you’re hiring at $15-20?!? Anyone making $15-20 an hour isn’t a tipped employee, and should never be. If you can’t staff your business at the current pay rate, then maybe you shouldn’t be in business.
I worked at Starbucks for many years and I was taxed on my tips. So if my tips did not add up to the 20 percent I was taxed on, Starbucks had to pay me to add up to the tax. You cannot be taxed on income you don't make.
If Gideon’s is unable to fairly compensate staff, treat them with respect, and keep them safe and comfortable then they should not be allowed to operate.
Craziness is counter workers wanting $16 to 20 bucks an hour. Go get a job where you actually have to provide service to a customer and get paid for it. Those over priced cookies will be another 50%+ more if they have to double the workers wages. Sanitation if gideons can not fix it they should be shut down
You want to do their job? This idea that these service jobs are 'easy' just because they are entry level is so stupid. No one wants to do these jobs. That's why they have to make a competitive wage.
They are a heck of a lot better than Crumbl and when we had them on our trip out there 2 years ago to us they were less sweet, but that depends on what cookie you get. Overpriced? All cookies are ridiculously over priced now so that point is moot. Out here at Disneyland people who have tried Gideons are begging for Disney to get them out here at Downtown Disney.
Why should you tip at Gideons. It is Not a restaurant , you don’t seat down and they come and take your order and bring you anything. It’s like tipping at McDonalds or Walmart. The tipping has gotten out of hand.
It's very simple, a tip is for someone who creates something or offers an actual service that goes above and beyond. If you're grabbing a premade item from a case, no you don't deserve a tip. That's the job.
It's silly to take a ride that is going to push people through the same way the old Splash Mountain did and now make people fight for a spot in the same line or pay extra for it. 😡
As someone who's been through the fire Marshal process multiple times opening spirit Halloween stores. I promise you that you have been lied to about the emergency exit Egress. They're basically saying that the fire Marshal approved that building opening, even though that there is no emergency exit Egress in the back that goes to that alley that they say it's not connected to. It would have never been opened, period. Theyre not being truthfull
1) I think it’s funny that the probably highest-capacity ride Disney’s made in a while (not counting Tron I suppose) has the most complicated preview process yet. Not to mention that it’s a confirmed high capacity ride since, unless something wild happened, it has the same capacity as Splash! They KNOW they can move people through it. 2) Gideon’s is an interesting story I’ll keep an eye on. The tipping thing is stupid but that’s not just them, every place is trying to throw tipping at you so they have an excuse to pay their employees less according to labor laws.
Regardless of whether or not you agree with every one of their points, I'm inclined to trust the employee claims in the letter. Workers always have way more to lose by speaking up, especially with Florida as an at-will employment state where anyone can be fired for any reason (or no reason.) I hope they're able to win fair wages and health/safety protections.
Those kiosks or point of sale machines that ask for tips are programmed that way from the manufacturer or point of sale company...whatever facility that is using them has not control over the requesting of tips on those things. Same with places that use iPads, it's built into the software and is an automatic option.
That’s pretty bad working conditions at Gideons bakehouse. I’m surprised that they’re legal to stay open. Although the complainants probably should’ve kept the complaints to health and safety and toxic work environment and stopped before including petty complaints.
WDW News. Eric, Why is it that everytime when 3rd party companies on Disney Properties have staff etc. problems. Why do the headlines always make it sound like it's Disney who is the problem. Gideon's does'nt feel like it's a normal place to tip. It's not a restaurant. Cheers, Chris Perry
Hopefully Tiana’s having a virtual queue means that tron (and guardians while we’re at it!) will be finally opening standby queues. It would be really annoying to have 2 forced virtual queues in the same park at the same time
Nope they will do two at one time in the same park, no way either of the other rides go on a standby line, you will just have to pick which ride that day is more important or buy a lightning lane which is what Disney wants anyways lol it’s all a money grab
I’d rather have a return time for a virtual queue than stand in a 10 hour line. I view it as the lesser of multiple evils when a ultra popular attraction opens.
@@DanTheMan1973the problem is first you have to be lucky enough to get a reservation the wait on the Disney website to get the park reservation was over 3 hours then when you show up to the park you aren’t even guaranteed to ride it, you have to be lucky enough to be one of the people that clicked on the button to get the virtual queue within the Millisecond it turns 7am or 1pm ask anyone that tried to get the virtual queue for Tron or Guardians when it first opened
They will not gonna learn anything they will keep on doing it until they will learn what they are doing wrong or if they will go out of business around the world
Kinda of off topic, but the long awful lines at Gideons get in the way with trying to purchase a cookie. Anytime I’ve tried on my trips to dis springs I had to walk away.
It’s amazing how tone deaf Disney Management is to the bad taste they have created by forcing these stupid services on out of town guests who deal with the stress created by Genie Plus and virtual ques.
Disney can get some extra dollars with the Individual Lightning Lane out of people for a while. But it’s essentially the same ride that’s been there. Just new animatronics and soundtrack
Absolutely is the way it's going to be, normally I would say this is all Chapek's problem because they didn't want to eat crow and have an 11 hour queue for an exciting new ride. But this is all Disney greed right there, because they are reserving an unknown percentage (I would bet money it's more than half) for paid Lightning lane virtual queue spots. So if you try at 7am and don't get it, no problem just charge $25 and you can skip the line and get a queue spot... and it 100% will be a spot that's at a reasonable time too.
I am a business owner and while I love people that want to work, asking for a 100% Wage increase is ludicrous. I'm pretty sure that cookies are not worth $16 an hour per person And if they keep it up. I will soon be ordering my cookies on the kiosk And it will be their own faults. If someone wants to give extra great. Pretty sure long list of demands generally doesn't go over well sorry, guys.
F this virutal que bs... I like how the TAPU TAPU system works at volcano bay... you get to the board and tap in... NOT WAKE UP AT 6 SOMETHING AND BE THERE AT 7:00 ON THE DOT and have LIGHTING fast fingers... and STILL don't get in... and it works that way for MONTHS...with no standby...
Thank you! 💛 Not too happy about only having a VQ and Genie+ LL for when Tiana’s opens. I’m not a morning person, so I usually end up using Plan C - ILL the individual lightning lane - which is not being offered. Hopefully the standby lane does actually open soon like they say!
@@alexisbk9576 True, but again it'll still be there, the lack of patience in guests at the park are the real reason why Lightning Lane works so well and they make TONS off it.
@@Mike__BYou obviously have no idea how things have been running in Disney Parks lately… Guardians Cosmic Rewind has been open for 2 years and still doesn’t have a standy line. Saying to wait is just ridiculous, its not a month or two.
@@himynameiscorey Wow color me shocked Disney making decisions in it's parks that is detrimental to the enjoyment by the majority of it's guests. I still say you can wait it out, it's just one ride, it's not like you're missing your chance at kidney transplant or something.
so sad to hear all that about gideon's ive never been able to try the cookies but they always look so good so i really wanted to. thats ridiculous that they are classed as tipped employees but aren't allowed to mention tips! i would have just assumed they were working for a regular wage rather than tipped given the set up. tipped employees that are not active servers is just greed, the company passing passing the buck for paying their employees onto the customers who are already the ones paying for the products smh
Oh wow, I don’t know enough about the Gideon’s situation to have an opinion, will be interesting to see if they go into litigation. I have never had a Gideon’s cookie and probably never will - I am not that much of an over the top sweets person - they look like they would make me sick.
The whole tipping thing has gotten out of hand in these food counter service establishments. Here is crazy-ass California fast-food workers now get $20 an hour minimum and some still want tips - Wow! I do think they should end tipping at Gideons and just pay whatever the standard minimum wage is. As far as the employees moaning about what they are expected to do and work outside, that is true for most of the Disney CMs at the parks where they work outside or rotate from inside to outside. Get over Gideons employees! If you don’t like the job there are dozens of other places in Disney Springs to work!
I don't usually tip at counter service, but jfc they should be getting paid better. Upper management aught to be ashamed. That drone show looks awesome tho.
Eh, Summer House On The Lake has better cookies now anyway. All flippancy aside, this Gideon's story makes me terribly sad, and I hope that the staff action can bring about a positive change in their working conditions and remuneration.
I don’t understand this gideons tips thing, you can still tip them, tips have not been banned, they still come up on the payment machine, staff just can’t overtly ask for tips, a lot of people don’t like being asked for tips, so ironically they might make more money from doing this if people feel less forced or uncomfortable. I want people to earn enough but I do not personally feel comfortable being outright asked for a tip and I would probably not use the business again if I had a negative experience there. I think they just need to end tipping altogether and pay staff a higher flat wage. It shouldn’t be on me to be guilt tripped into topping up wages, instead, just make the cookies more expensive. It’s like they want to raise your blood pressure and make the interaction more stressful. I also think if the letter had come out after a few months where they could show their average wage had dropped by xx number on average from no longer asking, then it would have more impact.
I’m sorry. But choosing between TRON or Tiana’s Adventure is a SERIOUS crime. If you can’t get the 2nd VQ time for the other one, you have to pay for LL if you wanna ride. Insane.
Gideon’s cookies are not good, I’ve never understood the hype on the over sweet and expensive 🗑️. There are plenty of other places that have better cookies.
Take a minute to actually read the demand letter from the employees it’s pretty much filled with crybabies. They can’t shake the coffee. The people come to Gideons for them not the cookies…??? delusional
Let’s see shut down a supposedly insensitive ride change it to something that has no tie to the movie and then get racists to voice the characters. How come all the other princesses get castles but princess Tiana gets to run a restaurant doesn’t sound like proper treatment for a princess not even equal treatment. You’ll never see Anna ,Elsa or Sleeping Beauty running a hash house sounds discriminatory to me
But it Tiana dream, Tiana also married into the royal family. Which is different from a lot of the princess except ( Cinderella, aurora, Mulan, and an couple others )
I beg to differ on the running a restaurant aspect. That is what is so relatable. She is a business woman and boss lady that made her dream a reality through hard work and determination. She is a boss lady and entrepreneur, which I think is why many women find her more relatable. Merida and Mulan are hardcore awesome, but not that relatable, most of us aren’t riding into battle anytime soon. Her end goal was not to be a traditional princess. Just my personal take on it. 🤷🏻♀️
The one time I went inside Gideons, all the employees were short & seemed unhappy, I guess I now know why, they definitely need to shut the doors or limit hours to address these issues and operate like a real company if they plan to continue business, all this sounds pretty shameful and example of greedy & poor management imo.
Weird because the 3 or 4 times I have been there every employee seemed to be pretty happy and in a good mood. The letter the few employees who made the complaint is extremely cringe and comes off childish.
@@ttintagel 🤣🤣 it was akin to the Soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld tbh. Coffee was good, I don’t really care for their cookies anyway so it’s not like I have to worry about going back. If I really had to try it again, I would do West End. But after these reports - prob not. I think there’s some credibility to the employees claims.
