These seemed all cool until you mentioned ads. If they were to implement these technologies, they better make a law to prevent pop-up ads cuz that would be dangerous.
Of course no law will prohibit ads. Ads pay the bulk of the costs for the tech. Ads pay the content creators . Advertisers pay the corporations that own the politicians.
That's going to be a tricky balance, because if you put on your AR glasses and your spaces are now cluttered with ads - let alone pop-ups - a lot of people are just going to take them off and return them.
That's not the only danger I see here. This technology would only strengen the two class society and make nothing better in the long way. Those with money would by an ad-free version while anyone else had to use the hardly advertised & supported version with less features and stuff. It's maybe a strange comparation but Coca Cola is in many south American countries even cheaper as water. They have the reality that only kids from rich households are growing up drinking water while the poor get diabetes, bad teeth and are overweight. My point is, you can have all these awesome futures if you can pay for but don't even think about buying the ad version. You probably have to earn the points by doing some stuff for the company and almost everything you'll see on your headsets are ads, popups and other needles stuff. And if this is not enough, everybody who wanna know where you were at a certain time and what you did there, can see it now in HD or 4k... or whatever the standard will be.
@@Spielername Not to worry, the hackers will find a way to jailbreak these things and block all the ads and shut down all the trackers anyway. It took like two days to port all the "exclusive" Oculus content to the the OpenVR based Vive with a single patch. They're trying to put everything in "the cloud" now so we can't do that anymore, but it won't work, we'll find a way.
I wear hearing aids, and they can serve as bluetooth earbuds so I can listen to my phone or my computer through them. This is generally pretty convenient, but there are times when it's a bit frightening. When my phone starts playing an ad on RU-vid, and then the interface freezes so I can't stop it, I feel like I'm in an episode of Black Mirror. I imagine that wearing an AR device all the time would be like that, but worse.
This is what worries me. Im not opposed to AR wearable technology, because theres so many use cases that geninuely would help so many people, my problem with it is that corporations realising and deciding to go all distopian cyberpunk on us and filling every cm of our vision and hearing with adverts.
Lol. Agree. The ads are very obnoxious and often play louder than the video or podcast itself making it even worse. I was thrilled when I got my Bluetooth enabled hearing aides as I could finally enjoy listening to stuff at work like coworkers could with their headphones.
Pass on both fronts for me. Don’t get me wrong, there’s something amazing about the creativity behind these developments and potential application… but I’m increasingly craving a quieter, calmer life away from technology, surrounded by nature…. The sounds, the sights, the smells. Give me this any day.
I think the upside of this is that you would be able to choose by not donning the AR gear. But maybe I’m just being hopeful in that they’ll make the actual reality quiet
If vr takes off like that then chances are that public places will be alot more peaceful because more people will choose virtual experiences instead of real ones

For me VR and AR brought to everyday life just sounds that people can't stand being bored. That there always have to be some stimulation to keep their social media filled brains interested. For myself, I just want to feel and see the world as it is, with goods and bads. Be here in that moment.
I think I can tell you about how it feels to be severely deprived of tactile stimuli; I suffer from contamination OCD, which means I only touch and physically interact with the bare minimum of things; sometimes I can only grab things with gloves or pieces of paper, since dirtiness gives me an enormous amount of anxiety. I never touch the floor with my hands, or the walls, doors or handles in public spaces, and so on. I can hardly ever touch plants, animals or people; I cannot normally tolerate being touched. I have to avoid physical contact with so many things that I end up trapped in my room and isolated, rarely being able to go outside. So again, as someone so extremely sensory deprived, especially when it comes to physically feeling and interacting with your surroundings, I can tell you how awful it is and how much you would be missing out if your physical environment is either completely or partially replaced by a virtual realm. Don't do it.
In the future, describing someone as a "realist", will have an entirely new meaning. I rather want cities to invest in reality, then in some virtual improvements.
The point of virtual improvements is so that it becomes EXTREMELY low cost while the real world could be set up for more natural architecture. Wake up!
I'm with you. Flooding, sewerage, garbage, and traffic jams may be whisked away in the virtual world but will remain a reality. You're not going to be able to escape the smell of a dead rat wearing a VR mask.
Yeah! As soon as I heard "virtual tree" my reaction was "Thanks, I hate it." I'd rather live in an ugly, but real neighborhood, than in an ugly one with fake trees, or even a fake tree between two real ones. Adding a beautifying layer on top of reality is the most dystopian thing I've heard in a long time.
Top two things I would use this for without causing the ick, 1. Using it to prototype things you want to actually create in the physical world. 2. Treating it like a spirit world, with strange creatures and magical interactions-leaning into the bizarre, unsettling, but at times fantastical feeling augmented reality gives. Like a trip into another dimension, for better or worse. Otherwise it's just going to be paint on rust, glitter on poop, lipstick on a pig
Or even for the repair of real things. A headset allowing you to see where that last little bolt is, or how much material you need. Where to cut. Such things could be very useful but always the moral problem rears it's ugly head...

Your comment about masks being creepy reminded me of something that happened back in 2020, when masks in my area were mandatory but still kind of a new thing. I was in a supermarket, and I passed a younger couple moving in the opposite direction down an aisle. They were deep in conversation -- which was a bit louder than usual because at that time no one was familiar with how much sound actually gets through a surgical mask, so I could her them clearly discussing the problems with masks. As they passed, the woman commented, "I can't tell what anyone is doing -- they could even be sticking out their tongue at me and I wouldn't know!" (Isn't it amazing what some people worry about...?) I also see a problem with virtual nature... An AR tree does not capture CO2, does not provide shade, does not provide shelter to small animals, does not help lower urban temperatures, does not... You get the idea.
That is an excellent point. My biggest concern is how this will shape the world for those of us that get left behind (i.e. the homeless, low income, and people living in rural areas and small towns). Keeping up with technology costs money, even more so for people who live in low density areas where you can be miles from the nearest viable internet connection or public charging station, and landmarks are poorly mapped because very few people see those maps let alone review them.
A friend linked this to me, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm no architect, nor am I super-vested in AR/VR. Still, I was reminded of a line from (I believe) Jared Diamond where he said, "We are the first civilization to live amongst our own ruins" (or something to that effect), and a lot of the AR stuff highlighted, especially towards the second half of the video, felt like ways to paper over living within our own ruins without making meaningful change. Though I think the intent was to end on a hopeful note, I found it to be a warning.
VR is fun distraction just like RU-vid but at the end we still need to eat, sleep, and shelter from the elements so in the end how we do these things will change but the activities themselves won't. Also we not the first civilization to live in our ruins because our bodies themselves are vast ruins of decay like trees only a small part is actually dynamic.
As someone who works in both sides of the spectrum shown in the video. I think what's best is to focus on reality more. AR could be used as a helpful indicator of a property owners intentions for an area in different layers of use. Say an area is ok to start a community garden on. The owner registers a space as ok to use the space like this or a public park says you can plant there. For kids you can more easily designate safe to play zones. Not every space is obvious to how it's used in the public eye, so we end up with empty areas being underutilized and broad blanket laws that cover generalized areas on spaces that could be viable for the public to use. AR could allow the public to know if they can volunteer to certain projects without tracking down the owner and bugging them constantly. Make it so AR can help people as a tool to create paradise areas and educate the public. So when you take the machine off your head the world has been made better because of it. Geotagging in AR could also be used to showcase different peoples ideas for how a space could be designed in reality. Then if the property owners check the tags they can be inspired by some of them.

While the denizens subsist on smoked fish and lentils, to their senses they feast on delicacies, and while they live in thatched-roof hovels, they see and move through the palatial mansions that once stood there. Exactly! I thought about this with the alley ways. What if you’re walking through a beautiful AR alleyway but you don’t realize how dangerous it actually is? Or the AR erasing physical elements that are posing a threat?
Tbh I'm legitimately scared of this. We're already so disconnected from each other that I feel like this could be the breaking point. Both VR and AR could be used in fascinating ways but the majority of humans tend to use technology for the less fascinating and more destructive ways.
Exactly. The Internet is a perfect example of this. It takes a high level of willpower to avoid using technology for destructive purposes, especially when your isolated from others. How much of the Internet is porn?
They said the same thing about books, the newspaper, cinema, television, video games, personal computers, cell phones. So just stop. I use VR to get together with my friends when I moved out of state. I watch movies in a virtual theater, play games. So it is the opposite of what you are thinking.
@@laartwork All the examples of tech advancements besides the last one you gave originally had interpersonal spaces dedicated to them to acquire and utilize the items with, that were, generally, extremely necessary for those utilizing them heavily. The main splitter and differentiator was the Internet/Cell Phone, which actually is the turning point from social-spaced to socially-isolated, and undermines your argument, because scientifically the lack of needed time and physical investment into social interactions and spaces the internet/cell phone shift caused has created a global public health crisis for phsysical, emotional, and psychological health....
Most interesting thing I've seen on this channel. I already have put in a lot of work in the last 2 places I lived NOT to orient the living room around a TV. It can be difficult to have a TV in the room for those few nights I actually want to watch something vs the majority of nights I want to talk with people or read. Creating a TV that could fold away out of sight without tearing thru a wall was more work than I want to do again (modified shelving) so the 2nd place I used a projector which worked well enough, colors are a bit more muted but for the superrealistic 4K I found I liked that. In my current space I simply choose not to have a TV at all and have the projector in a different room, I put it out seasonally, usually in the middle of winter when there is a lot more darkness outside. Speaking to augmented spaces- having people 'see' literally different realities might be the end of civilization as we understand it. Those with the money and power to affect social change can live in their own reality, ignoring what they prefer not to see as if it did not exist... until it does not exist or there is a massive social shakeup.
I'm always reminded of Ghost in the Shell (and GitS: Stand Alone Complex). That series has been warning us of blurring VR, AR, AI, and technology with real life.
What’s to come? how about actually flying and other superpowers. If you ever had a good psych trip.. As someone with a chronic illness who is mostly housebound, VR is very interesting to me, especially as a way to be a part of community spaces (such as a coffee shop/library) while being alone, but also being at home (as I'm not able to physically go to those places so miss out on the community feel). I've never really considered it being place specific (probably because I already can't go to those places, so for me I want the ability to experience other places and meet other people, all while staying at home), but it is interesting. As more and more people become chronically ill and trapped in their homes due to Covid (both Long Covid, and the lack of masking meaning vulnerable people are still in lock down), I obviously hope they put research in, but until then, make the world more accessible for the vulnerable, disabled, chronically ill people. Obviously I don't believe the world should just be virtual, but I hope we'll be considered as these virtual experiences become reality.

Disabled people who are especially vulnerable to respiratory diseases are still having to live in permanent lock down because very few continue to mask. Covid also attacks the immune system so every time you catch it (even if you have no symptoms), it increases your risk of further infections (hence the increase of babies and elderly dying of influenza), as well as the chance of getting long covid (which can be post viral triggered disability, heart problems, or respiratory issues). What did I miss?

I don't think most people intentionally 'boot' their friends, but if you aren't able to go out and see them regularly, many will stop remembering that you can still message, etc, or simply decide you aren't worth the extra effort to stay in contact with (similar to the way people who move away often become estranged). And once you are confined to your home or your bed, it becomes very difficult to meet new people (thank goodness for the Internet).
William Gibson's book 'Spook Country' uses the idea of locative technology (AR) to recreate the virtual deaths of celebrities as art installations. Not only the deaths but recreating the environment in time of each incident including buildings, technology, and fauna no longer existing. To think that you could through AR learn the history firsthand of a location by experiencing that place within a specific period of an significant spatial occurrence.
Yet wouldn't those events and places basically be fiction? We have too tenuous of a grasp of reality as a society already. And what a great way to rewrite history.

@@jeffravage3829 Yup. Re-creations of history as, de facto, based on a combination of actual historical source information AND ASSUMPTIONS about the time and the event that may or may not be correct. Honest scholarship of history (or anything, really) states these assumptions up front so that they are subject to scrutiny.

Working for a fire department, I can definitely see the benefit of augmented reality heads-up displays on our masks that allow us to use thermal imaging to find the seat of the fire in a building or to search for survivors. But I still don't see why anyone would want to use this in their personal lives, especially out in public - at least in their current format of headsets. And even if they become as small as eye glasses...let's be real, no one wants to wear corrective eye glasses if they don't need to.
I am a Designer, Gamer and also have Experience in VR-Games. I can tell you playing the same type of game in VR is so much different. It puts me INTO the game and demands almost every aspect of my being (except thermal and smelling sense). It demands from my body to move in the digital space, to interact "physically". While playing games on a regular screen is just my mind transferring into the digital scene. My hands there are only a minimal method to give commands to the computer. If VR is being done right AND accessible, it is healthier for mind and body which allows to be more present withoneself in the virtuality.
What I love about your channel is you question and ponder possible effects of new tech. It's honest and well thought out; thank you for all your content! Gradually, I have become convinced that dystopian novels are in fact non-fiction. Unfortunately, we seem to be overlooking all the negative affects warned about in these books, because we get caught up in the excitement of new tech. Technology is supposed to be a tool not a crutch and, honestly, we can barely walk as it is! Recently, my family experienced a power outage. The panic we all had about whether we could charge our phones, how we were going to keep ourselves busy without WIFI and the difficulty with communicating to each other was an eye opener. I can't see how VR will make this dependency any better. Humanity is quickly forgetting its place in objective reality. Wall-E here we come!
I like the idea of it embellishing boring features to make them look more ornate, like the square concrete pillars being made to look like marble columns, but AR runs the risk of overwhelming people if it's overused, which it inevitably will do in my opinion
As cool as Ready Player One as a concept is and as a fan of the book, I don't actually want a world anywhere close to that. And as someone that is in tech (in one way or another), I always tell people to stay as far away from devices that need to be connected to the internet to be used at all. Having a headset that is sandboxed in a way that can still be used when not connected to the internet is the ideal.
VR is one of those hair brained visions of future that like flying cars will never come to pass. The META verse is dead. Oculus rift flopped. The closest we every got to VR experience was Pokemon Go. But that was a unique phenomenon that is already in the past. That only reason it was successful was because it was shared experience.
Sometimes i stop watching your videos, to accumulate and later on start a marathon watching them. I would say you are improving with each video. Also I find your voice relaxing. Much appreciated, keep going :)

Hi Dami, there is a video game called "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" that has some architecture with "augmentations" made to look like AR integrated directly onto their facades. I do have a video on my channel called "Augmented City" showing some of these buildings which may interest you.
Great vid. As a VR/XR enthusiast, I get a lot of pro-AR content so it was good to hear a more centralist pros-and-cons type of essay on this subject. There's actually an XR ethics committee that's trying to build guidelines for future ad practices & public xr experiences. One thing I would've like to have seen explored is shared virtual space. During the pandemic, VRChat and vritual parties/raves skyrocketed because it did well to replicate human presence for a simple event; enjoying music with other ppl. To this day, VR still affords many who don't have access to such events and spaces, thanks to the passionate virtual community. I imagine social AR/VR being interwoven with IRL events in ways that grant access in very real ways to ppl around the world. Like, you can be at the actual show in LA, but then also congregate at a theater in wisconsin and co-watch the show with other folks through your XR glasses as if you're there with the ppl in the room. Just want to note that by the time people are comfortable with the headsets, they may well be augments, like implanted contacts, or even direct mental feeds. If that is the case, we may smell the cedar we see, virtual or not.

Love watching your videos. Giving me a lot to think about in my own personal life, and goals in the sense of being self reliant, as well as part of a community.
I am a frequent VR user. I play a game called VRChat, though it shouldn't be called a "game". It's a digital social place that people "go" to in VR. It is still relatively underground and niche, but know this: it is very much alive and has very strong cultures that are forming within the virtual world. There are communities and events and shows and people form meaningful connections. People fall in love with each other and make best friends with people from across the world. Some of the people there spend so much time and money that they do indeed begin to neglect their physical lives. Till this day, I am not sure if what VR is doing will be good or bad for society.. Mark my words: one day, VR headsets will become more compact and comfortable. Eye tracking, face tracking, and full-body tracking technology will become the norm. When that happens, I promise you, it will become mainstream and the world might begin to resemble the movie Ready Player One.

For twenty years, I've been having dreams of floating holographic screens and interactive buttons hanging in my visual field. It shocked me when they came out with ipads, and then I started to see more of my dream technology in sci-fi movies like Avatar. Now I've lived long enough to see many of my dream things in real life! It's really weird that I dreamed about using this kind of tech before it ever existed. And it's really cool to think that I might get the chance to use this sort of stuff in my lifetime.

They pretty much already do. Consider that everyone gets answers to questions from Google. A company with way too much power in Silicon Valley determining what people should and shouldn't think.
Check out the anime Dennou Coil, the whole plot revolves around ar glasses and an entire city with digital features. Another anime involving ar is Fractale is more futuristic in that they use implants.

11:50 - We'd be missing Scent, Touch, Taste; but our brains *do* sub in the scent from memory. We don't actually smell it, but we remember the sensation of smelling it and how that made us feel, which in turn triggers those emotions again. (Like walking by a Cinnabon store for the first time...heaven, lol.) Touch could be replicated with thin, microfiber bluetooth haptic gloves. (Think those slick thin pieces of fabric you clean your glasses with. These could even be made to look fashionable; like driving gloves.) I really like your idea of enhancing what's already there, *if* there's a basis there to start from. Lots of urban and suburban places don't even have much basic greenery to build off of, sadly - probably the best we'd get in those places would be Google Glass' AR version of popping up a bubble to show you a missing road sign or telling you the hours of a store.

This was incredibly interesting to watch, especially as I myself have been a VR architect for social VR applications. I've weirdly enough already been living in this potential digital reality for 5 years, spending my entire work and social life mostly through VR goggles & Tracking technology to completely immerse my body in to a digital setting. We've already seen and had live shows, concerts, underground clubs, sports, flying clubs, car fanatics, you name it, it exists! and pretty much very social either curated for just friends, or sit in a public setting and make connections with a variety of interests and people from cool backgrounds. when it comes to architecture, we both adore & pay very close attention to realism, but also at the same time through possibility in to a wild tail spin of dream and imagination that can be seen either subjectively or socially with others to form all sorts of experiences. And you are very right about eliminating the TV. i haven't had a TV for years, just a couch room to chat and talk in when guests visit ( there is a weird sense of awkwardness because of that ). I either watch alone, or in social apps that allow you to see online VR friends and watch movies and shows too. We've mostly eliminated physical boundary, and limitations of the logistics to see people on a global scale. I had to build a live concert stage, with the performer on the USA east cost, event host in the UK, and the livestream handled on west coast canada, for a show with an audience all over the world, live. Kinda insane the tech we have today

I don't want to live in a world of lies. I don't want to live in a world where reality is more expensive than theatre. (I say this as someone who absolutely loves theatre, and wants it to be more available to average people.) I don't really know how to articulate these feelings in an intelligent way, but there's just something sad to me about having to wear a computer in order to experience beauty.
The shared virtual space and communication, how is it like dancing? Social dance, like Ballroom and Latin dance, is a sharing of space and communication without words. I can dance with a total stranger, yet we can communicate nonverbally in such a precise way we can move around a room crowded with other dancers and all share a most beautiful experience as the music moves us.
Having experiences with strangers has been shown to make you happier, kinder, less stressed. The idea that we're going to all hike in our own virtual world sounds horrific to me
Great video, well researched, but I think when we focus on possibilities, we can sometimes miss important factors to consider. I have slight critiques of things I think you missed in your analysis. The idea that AR can improve poor neighborhoods is missing that fact that 1. These technologies aren't accessible to poor people 2. The only companies that are trying to make it accessible are doing it so they can create a new market where they hold a monopoly, which is very dystopian, you might be able to only see meta-approved projects. And another thing I would like to point out, it doesn't matter if virtual trees are cheaper, the role of trees aren't just for beautification, they are for clearing pollution, cooling cities, maintaining biodiversity, and providing shelters for animals, they also can improve road safety. The idea that we can place less trees and replace some with virtual ones should be unacceptable, it's not just about tactile touch. I know you aren't advocating for these things, I just think that this analysis would be more well-rounded. But like I said great video, keep it up!

As tantalizing as making a more accessible way to alter our environments seems, I don't think that AR is the way. There's still so much we can do to make the world better and more beautiful in reality, and I feel like AR is just a cheap way of getting there in a way that is not only more dangerous (because of monetization/capitalism) but hollow in its experience. Every time I've used VR, it's always felt hollow no matter how much my body tried to fill in the gaps or I tried to suspend disbelief. From a mental health perspective too, I feel like maybe there's a risk of a dissociative element in VR/AR experiences and as someone who struggles with dissociation/depersonalization, that's really terrifying.
The virtual world can easily give theories or ideas to learn, and on the other hand, for individuals or people, it may give a negative direction or The virtual world makes the realities of real life more fanciful or allows people to escape from the truth......
This is literally the basis for a story by William Gibson where a courier steals a pair of sunglasses but it turns out its propriety tech from a Corp that is just AR glasses used for architectural design and it shows the design for the first non constructed building but a building grown from machines to be built in SF.
I need to look up a few SF stories that address this. Everyone has their own experience, but reality has been allowed to run down and become shabby because the AR world is always perfect.

Good people, as I have witnessed you to be, even in these short videos, don't strictly practice leveraging malice to sustain a living image over others., or nor perceived power over those around us /you. I know there is a lot of negative feelings towards Big Tech, especially as we imagine a future through the lens of Black Mirror. But at the same time, I'm really interested to see what good could come from technology like this. I'm pumped for the possibilities of Apple's Vision Pro and I love how you've plotted out some ways these virtual and augmented realities could paint our future. I love the idea of enhancing what's already there, but not fully replacing it. I think we all still want the world, but filling in additional trees or plotting a mountain range in the background of your city would be cool. But would we run into a certain sadness when we took the glasses off? Kind of like folks felt after they saw Avatar and returned to our "boring" world. I dunno. Great video!
We just got VR and even as limited as it is, I adore it. It's an addicting experience going from one environment to another at the click of a button. My eyesight is a little below average, and the digital world is so crisp and clear that it's like being a kid again. I would love to change our home to be more VR and AR friendly as it would allow us to make a more efficient use of our limited space.
We are 💯% headed toward a Minority Report style AR-ad based experience. Companies have been playing around with AR for the last 15 years and everyone with a phone, "smart" or not is being tracked. Google serves up ads based on location and asks you for reviews for places you go and questions about items available, handicap access, etc. and Facebook tracks you even if you don't use their site or services. I absolutely agree that we are going to have a tiered, class based experience. It doesn't have to be like this but money talks and as long as the wealthy get to pick what they want with-respect-to everyone else. Things will only rocket in that direction. It's no different than me paying for RU-vid premium, someone else paying for a VPN or a service like Delete Me and a person who can afford all of the above.

and when you mention that communal space with VR head set, there is something that is missing from that space, the actual human next to you. there is a reason that the chocolate taste better with those around you, you are tasting it together. smelling it together. You are feeling it together. You are hearing the area around you together. There is a chance to touch the person next to you. A VR head set can give you an idea of all that, but not truly give you that. That is why all those spaces, like libraries and living rooms grow as they do, they have all those parts in mind as well. and you dont have to have anything attached to you. VR, you have to get home, put on your head set, wait for it to boot up, log in, go threw a menu, hope the batteries work, change out the batteries maybe, so on and so forth, it can never take the place of all the experience of truly walking into a room and seeing those smiling faces of those you are about to hug......
Ready or not, we're going there, and my biggest wonder is whether or not this will further isolate people; while I also wonder if vicarious sharing (very limited, currently) could bridge the gap somehow.
Probably a bit of both. Social media has made it easier for people to essentially create their own worlds and find communities they otherwise wouldn't have had access to before. VR and AR could exacerbate the effect.
i cant see this technology catching on until its as easy and seamless as putting on shades and your in vr. like a chip you can attach to any pair of shades or glasses that reads your brain so you dont need surgery or bulky goofy vr glasses

If we did this on a huge scale, it might lead to the western world collapsing as birth rates decline even faster than they already are. It would be great to see a video about population collapse and how it could affect the future of architecture.
TBH, I think the birth rate decline has two factors: First, people putting more effort into fewer children. This isn't really a bad thing on its own, it brings us down from growth to stability. Second, though, is economic problems. A lot of people can't afford a stable enough lifestyle to have kids. I'd also add a third factor, which is media scaremongering making it seem worse than it is.
What mass media hogwash nonsense have people been fed these days? There is over 8 billion people on this planet, a balanced gradual/slow reduction in births would be a good thing. The population currently is in too much supply, causing low value and low demand for everyone. With the present stage of total development that humans have reached, we only have capacity for 5 to 7 billion people at most.
Alleys are not "left over space" they serve a function in the urban environment. I remember reading about how the new urbanists wanted to bring back alleys as they are something that is lost in suburbs. This is beside the point of your argument of course but I thinks it's worth noting.
This is such a great topic, I hope you make more videos about VR/AR. The tech is still in its infancy. The first smart phones were more expensive, and could do a fraction of what they can do today. The same is true of AR/VR. Once the price goes down, and capabilities and comfort increase I think it could create a new revolution in how we experience the world, especially once tools are made for non-technical artists to help shape shared spaces.
There was a Stanislaw Lem novel called The Futurological Congress about a world where everyone used a form of augmented reality constantly. It was in the form of some sort of chemical drug rather than a headset, but the effects were the same. The world was overcrowded and falling apart, but because the government created an illusion of wealth and comfort, nobody noticed. Very dystopian.
I guess the main question is ‘how do we stay connected (to humans and our humanity) while being “connected”? How do we integrate and make new, genuine, HUMAN, experiences?’ Thank you, Dami, for this thought-provoking video/conversation. Another outstanding video.
Exactly. Moreover, as designers, we must also realize the importance of tactile experience in architecture and the built environment. Humans have evolved because of the physical world around them. Be it tactile experience or visual, it is absolutely essential that human beings use their senses to experience the immediate world without the intervention of digital technology.
You know the creepiest thing? That nvidia tool where you can be on a stream or video call and it makes your eyes always look at the camera while you look at the screen, it's the most unnerving thing ever

Having a fun little AR event for artists to show off their cool designs is one thing. Having everyday be a bombardment of ads while also further atomizing us from each other and our surroundings would be a nightmare. We’re lonely enough as it is.
As a side story of his "Blue Ant" trilogy, William Gibson explores "Locative Art", which is art works that only exists in AR, but are site specific - in other words, they depict in 3D something (often gruesome) that took place in a specific space. Probably impossible in the early 2000s, at the time the books were written, but totally doable now.

Thank you for thinking about trees, however illusory trees definitely would not substitute physical trees' utility/services within the built environment (e.g. urban heat island mitigation, protecting/sheltering pedestrians from weather & motor vehicle traffic, stormwater management, particulate pollution interception, etc.) If anything, illusory trees would add a dystopian, experiential layer. Hyper-individualized, fantasy subjective experiences would divert so far from inter-subjectivity that people would become wholly unaware of just how environmentally degraded their surroundings had become... Or, you know, the palm trees in a desert mirage give no real shade from the sun; rather, only a delusion of shade and sunburnt confusion.
There's two additional issues, I see: 1) when our reality is subjective even in the same space, our tether to truth and common understanding will be even more tenuous; and 2) by placing trees or niceties in an AR space more and more people participate in, the chance of fixing the grounded, physical world may be diminished as people can ignore it easier.
Think about all those adas, like we see ads all over internet popping in and out of over screens, image them poping literally every where we go and see 💀
The last line of your presentation is one of the possible solutions for the Fermi Paradox. We don't see aliens in outer space because they all moved into inner space.
Dami, it sort of already exists, people walk around glued to their smartphones, sometimes they look up and interact with other people, but sometimes i try to talk to someone and they are in their headphones so they don't hear me or they are looking at their phone and dont' notice me.

Watched this on the ceiling using my Apple Vision Pro - this kind of future makes you rethink many spaces in your home which you wouldn’t have utilized otherwise. I wonder how that will change how we all use our spaces. Love your videos, by the way!
