Very, very well done. This is very helpful, thank you. From a guy who wore BDU and four other camos for a career, the practical application and comparison of patterns is exceptionally helpful. Folks waste serious time an money testing and experimenting. I hope there is some appreciation shown for what you did.

This is exactly the kind of video I've been looking for. Someone to pare up hunting cammo patterns and brands with different seasons and backgrounds. Very smart and insightful video. I live in Texas and you know we ain't got much green around here. Its hard trying to find the right hunting desert camo for Texas environments. Thank you very much!

I have a 24 pattern video coming up that is bit higher in quality (with the new Valo from Kuiu). Trying to have it out this week. Each video will have a separate background since there are so many patterns. Should have a new background out every few days for about 6-10 different settings. Subscribe or check back soon.

I hunted the Ozarks in mossy oak for 30 years and then one year in the Seven Devils Mountains in First Lite Fusion. That kind of change in fabric as well as camo made me a believer. I appreciate the work of videos like this because now I want to try out other high end hunting apparels. Thanks!

Great video. Personally, I've been hunting with Natural Gear Camo for a long time. I've used it from the woods of northeast Texas, to the mountain ranges of southern California, and it's been very effective in various terrains. It's quiet, their fleece line keeps you warm, and it costs way less then most of the other big name hunting brands. Speaking of those big name hunting brands, it seems that they've all started to follow the philosophy of having less clutter, and more open, lighter patters. That's what NatGear has been doing since its inception. Just my two cents. Again, great work on this video and happy hunting.

I am doing another video with Natural Gear in the mix. Should be out soon. This time 24 patterns. Probably one video per landscape since there are so many. Trying to figure out the best way to present them right now.
@galinswigart

Interesting concept, but I think certain patterns rely heavily on the light and shadows present in their natural environment, and these all look out of place because of the studio lighting which is designed to remove all shadows for product detail purposes. I guess a true test with each garment would be cost-prohibitive, but would be very interesting.
@CamoMatrix

I agree. And yes, the different brands, patterns and travel would cost a pretty penny just to learn that if you just sit still and be quiet most will do the job.

After hunting in the west for several years I believe either the KUIU and Sitka Open Country are the best for such terrain. It is easy to lose site of your compadres if they are wearing such camouflage. If you think about it, any of these camo patterns will do...as I have spent thousands on this stuff....the old timers wear what ever they have and are just as successful. Good figure.

We must all keep in mind that superimposing images into photos will not depict what the camo will actually look like in real life due to the lack of actual light reflection within each environment. To our eyes, garment colors will significantly change depending on light conditions combined with the the surrounding colors in each setting. The best camouflages utilize these principles of light and reflection along with patterns that break up our human form. The only way to get a close representation of what the camo looks like in any setting is to take vids or photos of them on site like the last part of this video. Of course that would be quite the undertaking but the results would be so much more valid and useful. I don’t know anyone with that kind of time and funding, unfortunately.

This is an interesting video but I am not sure if it we can actually make a good decision by just looking at the different landscapes. Animals do not see the same way as humans so what we judge as being good may not actually work on animals. What would be interesting is if you could filter the scene and the camo to take out the colors that animals do not see and just leave the colors they do see.
@CamoMatrix
@CamoMatrix 4 года назад
I agree, this is really mostly for our (human) own satisfaction. I am working on a 25 pattern video with many more brands now and will see what I can do about filtering for big game.

Agreed. I have made some improvements in new videos to address this. There is no supplement for placing the camo in it a real environment. These videos are meant to get you in a good direction for what you may hunt. I do think that several things matter most. 1. Being relative to your surroundings (human or deer vision) 2. Breaking up the human shape 3. Little to no movement 4. Little to no sound. Of course none of that matters if the wind isn't cooperating.
@willshunting
@willshunting 3 года назад
@@CamoMatrix Thank you for your instructive, considered response. Here in Australia, tree stand and blind based bow hunting is very rare. Instead the most common method is moving on foot; glassing as far ahead as possible and then engaging in typically long slow stalks. In these conditions, scent direction, rate of movement and concealing profile (in that order) are paramount. Aside from feral pigs and goats, by far the most favoured quarry by bow hunters here are Fallow and Sambar deer. I have only been able to find detailed technical info on whitetail deer eye structure and vision characteristics, but understand those findings apply to Fallow and Sambar as well. I am particularly interested in deers ability to detect the UV span of the spectrum. In that connection, I would encourage all bow hunters to take their quiver of preferred arrows, place it in foilage and then shine a black light on it. Many vanes colours glow like neon signs. I am regularly puzzled by bow hunters who spend small fortunes on their clothing and worry about their bow camo pattern, but fail to keep their arrow vanes covered, both before and after an arrow is nocked. This is a much greater issue when the hunter is not elevated relative to the deer. Even when moving slowly, some common coloured vanes are highly visible at surprisingly long distances. I have fitted a length of large diameter black hat elastic to the draw string of my quiver vane cover. The other end of the elastic is tied to the lowest arrow rack of the quiver. This keeps the vane cover in place at all times and I can slowly slide a single arrow down and then out of the quiver without exposing the other arrows vanes.
@CamoMatrix
@CamoMatrix 3 года назад
@Will Hunting Thanks for all that information. (forgive me if you already know all this) The east coast of the US is mostly tree stand or blind hunting (which is where I am and I admit it is horribly boring). It is so thick and the deciduous leaves that fall make stalking like trying to sneak through a bag of potato chips. I do enjoy hunting from the ground MUCH more. On the east coast, we don't really get a good spot and stalk environment, we get a "still hunt" environment, which is walk very slowly and stop for a long time and wait. It has worked from time to time for me but I think it was more luck than my stealthy hunt mode. I often joke that I could be wearing a ballerina outfit while tree stand hunting and it wouldn't make much of a difference. Our western states offer more of a spot and stalk environment and I enjoy it MUCH more than the east coast hunting. I do agree, probably a very small portion (probably almost none) of the bow hunting population think about their arrow vane color and its visibility from a distance, and I am glad you brought it to my attention. I like your solution to this and will be checking mine with a black light. I do like to choose more dark red and green vanes for mine but you will make me think a few steps further. Awesome tip and hope others read your comment and evaluate their set up. By they way, I did try to do a deer vision video and even added deer vision to my colorado camo video. (basically removing reds and blending brown and green). Check out my camo playlist and see what you think.
@willshunting
@willshunting 3 года назад
@@CamoMatrix I know what you mean regarding trying to sneak through a bag of potatoe chips. It is open season all year round on Fallow, Sambar and Red Deer here in Australia, (both bow and rifle), which means dealing with leaf litter, dry twigs and the like during the warmer months. Unfortunately, warmer weather also means our various species of infamously venomous snakes are out and about; typically sunning themselves in the morning and being sluggish about moving out of the way. Super slow stalking of course reduces the likelihood of broadcasting your presence to the deer, but it is even more effective with snakes not being aware of your approach. Lacking ears, they would normally sense an adults steps via ground vibration, but of course that goes out the window, if your stalking technique is good. Suffice to say, I have had too many close calls with these critters, and I always carry a camouflaged carbon fibre based ski pole, which is attached to my bino harness via a lanyard. I find that the additional support afforded by the pole helps me be more stable during slow foot placement, plus I have the habit of leading with the pole tip; particularly when stepping over logs and rocks where I can't see over the other side. I still also wear knee high bite proof gaiters and carry specialised snake bite compression bangages, a light weight foldable splint and a mini EPLB in a rangefinder pouch on my harness. An untreated bite from even one of our Eastern Brown snakes can take out a 225lb adult, in under 30 minutes. Back on the subject of arrow vane visibility, although I use Nockturnal lighted nocks to assist in fired arrow flight path tracking and recovery, I have deliberately stayed with flights where at least the cock vane is highly visible under UV light. I carry a small UV light and in instances where the arrow hasn't been locatable by day, the combination of the lighted nock and the UV torch, has saved me quite a bit of money. When you add up the consolidited cost of a good quality arrow build, permanently lost arrows 'hurt' too much. Thank you for the heads-up regarding your posting comparing various camo patterns both in terms of human and deer eye perception. I use a 3D All Season All Terrain, (ASAT) suit in the hotter summer months, due to its great breathability and colour scheme that matches dead/dry gum trees; which dominate our woods or "the bush" as we Aussies call our highly vegitated areas. I always wear the suit hood which I have adourned with artificial leaves to break up my head and shoulder sillhouette even further. In the colder months I use New Zealand made, Hunters Element Disolve Veil camo clothing, including my rain jacket. My pack, bino harness and incidental gear are all in Kuiu Verde 2.0 which I find is great in the Aussie bush. I otherwise hunt wearing gloves in all but the hottest weather and prefer to use camo face paint rather than a bandit style, pulled up neck gaiter, as I have found this interfers with my spacial awareness. All of the foregoing said, if I could only have one camo outfit, it would be the 3D ASAT suite. It packs up to nothing, can be worn over all manner of underclothes and I have had multiple experiences of deer (and other wildlife), look right past me at super close ranges. They only main draw back is snagging on blackberries and the like, which can be infuriating to the 'less than patient' hunter.

@@willshunting This is all great information and I am glad you shared this. You have a great method and it seems to have been thought out with a lot of detail. I feel like you should also put that all on video to help out the hunting world. I am looking for a way to beat our Pronghorns out in the high plains desert with a bow and that 3D ASAT may be the best option, short of me assembling a mobile sage brush bush. Best of luck and steer clear of those snakes.

Camo is only to make the hunter feel better makes no difference to deer

Pasting a flat image over the scenes is total misrepresentation. And any camo comparisons without asat and predator is also bogus.

Thanks for the comment. I am working on adjusting studio light and also will have over 30 patterns, including ASAT and Predator. I attempted this in my deer vision video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jMni69Xi8eE.html

This video is irrelevant since you don't take into consideration how different animals you are hunting see color and vision. Your method is great if your goal is how to hide humans from humans.

Agreed. I am working on a new one that will remove remove colors outside of the cervid visual spectrum.
