Mark Bowden is back!
It sounds weird to say this: But this guy makes you feel at home when you chat to him. Yes, I know we’re all at home already - he’s curious, he uses your name when he talks to you, he asks questions, he nods, he does all the things to make you feel safe and ready to contribute.
I spoke to Mark in Episode 102 of the First Time Facilitator podcast, and it’s the #1 most downloaded episode of all time!
So, I brought Mark back on the show, to share how we can use our body language to create engagement and connections quickly, in the virtual world.
The answer is more reassuring than you think.
From my perspective - he’s been there, done that but my favourite thing about Mark is how funny, down to earth and comfortable he is to be around.
With our Virtually Possible community opening last week, I also decided to hand over the microphone to the group, and let them ask Mark some questions.
A big thanks to those from VP who joined live and felt comfortable coming off mute to ask Mark a question, you kept the fabulous group interview going, I salute you!
Voted the #1 Body Language Professional in the world for two years running, Mark Bowden is passionate about giving your audience the most influential and persuasive communication techniques to stand out, win trust, and gain credibility every time they speak. Inspiring, energetic, engaging, and entirely entertaining, Mark’s memorable talks and training programs not only educate but have proven life-changing in helping people and organizations grow across all industries and sectors.

Mark talks about lowering his status to create connections. What if your audience may feel they are of higher status then I am?
@LeanneHughes
@LeanneHughes 3 года назад
Hi Lin, can you share a specific example? I facilitate leadership workshops for construction managers around the world. Their status is higher in terms of their experience in construction, so I say that upfront, "You have the experience in construction, I'm here to facilitate a conversation, to get you sharing your experiences with others, so we can all grow together" (as an example)

@@LeanneHughes Many thanks for responding. I'm developing an online course for retiring academics to help them create an plan for an engaging new life purpose. I have a doctorate in education, but I have not been an academic. I consider myselft an "educational entrepreneur." I've done a numer of educational projects. For example, I developed and taught a course for the National YWCA; I've had an educational video production company, and I've taught college courses as an adjunct, but I've never held a full-time academic position. I see my experience as an advantage, but I wonder if my students/clients will.

@@lintollefsen6102 Great point you make. I have been in many many situations where I can think of reasons my audience is either ahead or behind me. And if I thought that mattered in the context of the work, then yes, I would become very aware. It's one of these 'believing is seeing' things. Besides, I usually start out with an understanding that everyone has qualities and it's what we bring to the table that matters. Everyone has something to offer and sometimes being the naive one is super valuable, cause you'll probably ask questions they haven't even thought of.

When I'm watching a video and the person is seated and looking down into the camera/laptop such as Mary Todorov, I get the feeling I'm being talked down to, no matter what the person is saying. Sorry Mary for calling you out on this but as an example you fit in with what Mark is talking about. With the plain and boring nothing but white background I'm tempted to believe that she's purposely is set up as an example of what not to do. As an aside, I began watching this because of Mark, my favorite of the Behavior Panel.

I think people were there to learn and maybe just had a laptop on the table. I mix it up all the time. Also, there is nothing wrong with a plain white background. Whatever works for you and for your audience. Sorry to see you felt so uncomfortable and Mark will be happy to read he is your fave. 😘

@@JoeriCreates Couldn't agree more. We're all a work in progress in this virtual space, and Mary is an AMAZING human!
