Vision Pro from a Developer's Perspective

I was lucky enough to have a 30-minute hands-on demo of Apple's new Vision Pro headset, alongside a 90-minute run-through of new APIs at their developer center. In this video I want to walk through my experience: my impressions of the demo, tell you what I think it means for developers, and give you some advice of what it takes to prepare your app for Vision Pro ahead of release.
This video is aimed specifically at developers; I'll be talking about SwiftUI, RealityKit, ARKit, and more. If you're looking for a more mainstream review of the device, this video won't be much fun!

Thanks for this. Perhaps because I’m an IT person, I actually found your video (by far), the most informative yet about the new Vision Pro headset. All the other commentary I’ve seen are just layman interpretations of what we all saw for ourselves in the keynote. Thank you. Much appreciated.

i absolutely agree 👍👍 it was so in depth, experience-wise, that it just felt like i had just used it myself. this man knows how to explain experiences. other reviewers kind of parroted each other, and used the demo clips etc. to back up what they were saying, but this was just like a mate down the pub telling us so much about some great experience he had. Paul! I can tell that you’re a fantastic developer because you understand the broader picture beyond the technology itself and how it functions. Even though you obviously spend plenty of time coding and making software work, you show that you have never lost your sense of empathy for how end users perceive technology and how it works with their life. I compliment you because I’m so passionate about user interface and user interaction and I’ve seen so many user interfaces that are functional but not necessarily user-centric. Instead, they are unfortunately computer-centric. I think this stems from lack of empathy that software engineers can sometimes display. However, it’s clear to me that in reviewing this new device that you see beyond its parts and performance-to its POTENTIAL! Thank you!

I’ve watched a select few, anyone who has tried it are blown away by the polish and attention to detail as well as the sheer potential; usually they will mention the price, but then Microsoft’s HoloLens starts at exactly the same price for a far less sophisticated device, and their “industrial” version is far more. I watched a video by Matti the filmmaker for a filmmaker’s perspective, and he was very emotional about the sheer potential based on his emotional response when he got to try it for the 30mins. Apart from sticker shock, I haven’t seen anyone who has tried it say anything more negative than it is heavy or the battery is limited to 2 hrs. I can see how people compare it to the iPhone 1, which got the same reaction; it is extremely expensive, and where are the apps? Who would want this? What can you do with it? If developers are excited for the possibilities, and it has built-in support for SwiftUI apps, I see huge potential, and Microsoft’s HoloLens just got Zuned. Nevermind Zuck’s Metaverse.

Paul, thanks for this great review! Developing for the Vision Pro is probably not too difficult to start, except if you're like me and you already spent over 1.5 years developing an AR game using SceneKit and ARKit with UIKit and Storyboards in anticipation of the then rumored Apple's upcoming headset. So now to make this game work on Vision Pro I'll need to rewrite everything with RealityKit and learn SwiftUI to replace all my UIKit stuff. And I know that there are many other developers like me in the same boat.

Thanks much for sharing your experience! I've a few questions if anyone knows the answer. 1. Will spatial computing work in outdoor environments? Everything in the demo video was indoors so I'm wondering if bright sunlight will interfere or if there isn't enough visual anchors in a typical outdoor setting to orient the UI. 2. Is the experience limited to one room at a time? For example, could I have an email app pinned to my office wall but walk across my home to go to the kitchen and have a grocery list app already open above the center island? Also, would occlusion work well when looking through a door way from one room to the next. 3. Is there a limit to how many apps/windows can be opened at a time? Can I create a suite of several standalone apps that could be visible and interactive at the same time? 4. Does the headset work when your head is sideways, such as laying your head down on a pillow watching content?

Given Vision is heavily based on iPad, I hope Apple spends time fleshing out Swift Playgrounds. Still keep it focused on Swift and SwiftUI, but expand it to support more frameworks and enable collaboration. Swift Data and Git support are the big ones. Great take, thanks for sharing your experience. :) You seem to suggest at ~ 16:35 that Apple's "3D video" is something more than stereoscopic video but from what I gathered the 3D video is exactly that - stereoscopic video shot with the headset. See this slide at 6:05 of the WWDC23 session "Deliver video content for spatial experiences" where it states "3d video = stereoscopic video."
@twostraws
@twostraws 11 месяцев назад
No, it's not that - that experience is the "happy birthday" clip they played in the keynote. I was referring to what (IIRC!) is called Apple Immersive Video. I believe it's a 180-degree-view camera with high resolution and spatial audio, as opposed to using the headset. This was *not* shown during the keynote.
@ChrisOffner
@ChrisOffner 11 месяцев назад
@@twostraws Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. It's still stereoscopic though, but with a wide field of view? Because I'd be surprised if they rendered a fully volumetric scene representation, like a Neural Radiance field ("NeRF") or similar at this resolution. That seems unrealistic even for the might of Apple Silicon at present.
@twostraws
@twostraws 11 месяцев назад
@@ChrisOffner My guess (big guess!) is that it’s two cameras with wide field of view, stitched together using whatever latest and greatest algorithms Apple have come up with, plus spatial audio capture. It is genuinely significantly better that whatever is the Hollywood standard for 3D movies right now, but I could begin to explain the technical advancements it entails.
@productjoe4069
@productjoe4069 11 месяцев назад
Looking at the cameras NextVR (who Apple acquired) bought they are using a combination of stereoscopic cameras with 360 degree cameras. That’s just what NextVR had announced before acquisition so that might have changed since. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple have a custom codec using concepts like NeRF, but it could also just be some form of multistream video that’s aligned on the headset. I’m a product and innovation manager these days rather than a developer though, so take my comments with a suitable grain of salt.

So how did they figure your glasses prescription and fit you with the correct lenses that quick?

Before the keynote I expected a headset that would be much better than other AR/VR headsets, but then I have had zero interest in the other headsets I've seen and I really expected I wouldn't care about these either. But I've watched many videos from people who had a chance to demo these, and I must admit I'm pretty tempted. I still doubt I'll put up money for this 1.0 version, but I could see maybe buying the 2.0 version.

This is Great! Thank you for doing this and thanks to Apple for showing this to you. This is the only developer opinion I have seen. A couple of quick questions: Will you need to get a a second Vision Pro for your daughter(s), or can one be usable by multiple people (Apple ID, Authentication, fit, etc.). Also there was a view in the Platforms keynote where there was a screen with Xcode, Reality Composer Pro and a 3D model - will there by a way to do 3D live preview (either for Xcode or Reality Composer)? Finally, Did you get any more information about using the Unity engine?

Many folks can use it just fine. Xcode's previews work great with visionOS!

Thank you for your info, but as soon as I saw the introduction I knew that this was a revolutionary masterpiece. It’s the closest thing to achieving the hollow deck as illustrated on Star Trek, the Next Generation. I too will definitely buy it. It’s as revolutionary as the first Mac or the first I-Phone.

I want to start learning programming, what would you advise me to choose UIKit or SwiftUI framework?

This is the first video that makes me actually want to get this despite the cost. I mean, if it really is that mind-blowingly awesome, it actually is worth it. I'm also thinking... 3D immersive Instagram or the equivalent is going to generate a lot of buzz, assuming the video can be viewed in 3D in other headsets like the Quest 3.

What hardware/devices would you recommend for someone to start getting ready to develop for Vision OS? I was thinking a MacBook (used if possible) and an iPad with lidar but would an iphone with lidar be the better choice? Any recommendations are welcome!

I”m equally as excited and trying to figure out how I’m gonna pay for it. It makes me wish I knew how to code so I could create something for it. But for now I can’t wait to do graphics and video editing in it. Not to mention watch movies, game, do zoom, teams and FaceTime meetings.

What I'm hoping for is some method to use Vision Pro as a VR headset for use with simulators on other platforms. Perhaps an app in visionOS that interacts with a server app on the other device that makes it appear like a conventional VR headset to the sim. E.g. being able to use Vision Pro with MSFS 2020...

So refreshing seeing a positive review of this device from a forward thinking developer... I don't think the majority of mainstream realizes what this actually is... a first gen device that will most likely hold resale value enough to resell and upgrade with minimal loss to the original investment made... In addition to a 0% interest payment plane to help shoulder the burden of the purchase....

I have a decent understanding of UIKit having taken Angela Yu's course 3 years ago. I've recently got that itch to get back into Swift and try to dive deeper into SwiftUI now that it's had time to mature. Do you think it's worth delving deep into SwiftUI to try and land that work from home job as a SwiftUI dev with some pretty basic UIKit understanding (Classes, structs, API's etc). Or would mastering UIKit and then move onto SwiftUI be what I should be focusing on? I'm just trying get that dev job in the next 3 months really diving into this and am worried I might kinda waste my time when I could be focusing on the future of SwiftUI. Any insight would be fantastic. Thanks Paul for all the fantastic videos. You're the one who inspired me recently to get back into coding!

Curious to hear more about the glasses prescription experience, did you have to provide apple with your prescription before hand? Did they just have case full of different lenses for you to match up with?
@twostraws
@twostraws 11 месяцев назад
They scanned my glasses to figure out my prescription, then slotted the correct lenses in for me; I guess they had prepared a whole bunch of left and right variations ahead of time. They did say for the real thing I'd want to get an exact prescription - i.e., hand them whatever my optician provides - to make sure I get something exact.

When we watch the WWDC videos we can see that Apple is doing a great job with SwiftUI, RealityKit and ARKit. 😁👍 On the other hand, I don't think it's as simple as that to adapt iOS applications for visionOS. And if we really want to make the most of the Apple Vision Pro, we will have to "think" visionOS and not iOS. This impression is further reinforced when watching the WWDC videos on the design for visionOS. I really can't wait to be able to make applications for visionOS, it's going to be really exciting 🤩

I will definitely be writing apps for this platform. Not sure if I can afford one, and not being in the US, probably means I won't. Also, I probably want to hold off until the 2nd gen. device with an M3 and feedback from the 1st gen.

Honestly I can't even begin to imagine. Right now folks need to spend thousands of dollars to have devices able to read paperwork to them, but with Vision Pro's cameras plus OCR… it's just transformative in every way. I got to chat to the accessibility team who worked on Vision Pro, and they have been working so very hard to make this accessible to as many people as possible - it's really exciting stuff, and I can't wait to see what folks do with it.
