A film and limited edition hardcover book about self-discovery, nature, harmony, exploration, and rock climbing in Kura Tāwhiti Castle Hill in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Kura Tāwhiti is a place that seems to thrill the human heart. It has long been a site of spiritual significance and artistic inspiration. In more recent times, it has become a magnet for rock climbers.
Climbers are like water in reverse here, slithering and flowing against gravity, so much so that climbing the limestone is often referred to as an art rather than a sport.

Well that was one of the coolest climbing films I’ve ever seen. I saw Isaac Buckley’s ‘Man from Moon’ or something like that when it was still up on YT a couple years ago. Watching this reminds me of the impression it left on me. Castle Hill looks like such an amazing place to be let alone climb. I plan on going to New Zealand for a little while later this year and climbing at Castle Hill is something I would love to do. Maybe I’ll end up editing this comment in a few months…

Haha. It's so cool to see the familiar faces of local climbers from Ōtautahi.

Nice video. Honest question though, doesn't water erode limestone? And if so, couldn't using water + brushing actually accelerate polishing?

Rain water is slightly acidic and that causes erosion of limestone which is a natural process. That process actually helps with cleaning the holds. Washing off the bulk of the chalk and rubber is what’s most necessary though, especially with the increased traffic to Kura Tawhiti

The limestone can damage easily, but recovers remarkably well when left to nature for extended periods of time. The cleaning with water is a minimal intervention approach in comparison to leaving chalk on the boulder which glosses and erodes the boulder faster. If climbers can move with care and think critically about how their impact affects it, they can ensure a long future for all who love to dance in the Castle Hill Basin.
