My youngest daughter did the Vaults Tour earlier this year. The slider has always been called that, or The Big Slider when we were all smaller. 🤣 Close to where you enjoyed some refreshments is the old entrance to The Rocks Railway. The lower part is on the Portway, close to where the row of houses ends. After it fell out of use, it became a makeshift bomb shelter in WW2, and I think the BBC had a facility there for broadcasting in the event of damage to their main radio facilities. Recently I checked out the upper and lower entrances, but they are fully secure at the top, and bricked up at the bottom. Just further along the Portway is the zigzag path, which climbs roughly the same cliff that the railway climbed, inside a steeply inclined tunnel. A similar design to the Rocks Railway between Lynton and Lynmouth, but cut inside the rocks in Bristol. Nice video btw. 👍
@@stephenwintle4314 hope she enjoyed the tour - fascinating that it was hidden in plain sight! I visited The Rocks Railway once during Bristol Open Doors Day and you’re right about all that. Bristol has such a fascinating history. I’ll have to cover both of those in a broader episode about Clifton… I think people would be interested in watching 😅
We left Bristol for Canada 60 years ago. In all that time, Clifton is still home to me (more precisely, Tottenham Place and Richmond Terrace). My bum helped polish that slide! Thank you so much for these videos. You're making a homesick old man cry, but it's worth every minute. I can't wait to see what you post next.
@@jimloth6091 oh wow, how very moving - thanks so much Jim. I’ve lots more in the pipeline for the southwest from 60s to the present day. I’ll have to wear some jeans the next time I visit Slidey Rock so I can give it another polish 😂
@@jimloth6091 wow 30 years ago. The harbour has changed so much since then and the ss Great Britain - I’ll share some videos about those at some point as I am sure you will be interested to see. That’s lovely you took them there so they could help out with the polishing 🤭
haha, glad to see an Eclectic Gift Shop fan on here! It is indeed :) I may well set up a comedy channel one day, but seem to have less time than ever..?
