Today in my GREAT BOTANICAL JOURNEY Mangrove Creek in Katikati, New Zealand to learn all about what goes into running a flower farm. See the first episode in this series: • How Orchids are Grown ...
Mangrove Creek grow a massive variety of flowers which they export globally. From their little spot in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, they grow hellebore, hydrangea, protea, viburnum, flannel flower, pieris japonica and more!
In this series I want to go behind the scenes and discover where our flowers come from. As a floral designer if I can’t find the flowers or foliage I want for a design in my garden, then it’s just a matter of a trip to my local flower market. As I cast my eyes over buckets and buckets of flowers, I got to thinking - somewhere, someone grows all these and I wonder what’s involved.
A special note of thanks to both New Zealand Blooms and Mangrove Creek for giving up your valuable time, at such a busy time of the year.

Oh… this was much too short! I so enjoyed every second. Astar, this was a brilliant idea for a series! And I hope it is a long one! I love your chats with the growers and your designs using the flowers we see from those chats. Thank you!

Hi Jesse, like you I was amazed at how the giant king proteas grow. Who knew, but here is another interesting thought to ponder, how & why does the botanical world produce something so big in the spring? They start flowering just after the snowdrops appear & they are so tiny. I thought the cymbidium orchid was the oldest but so is the protea. So fascinating. Warm regards Astar

Very informative!!! LOVE the tips, yesss!🌺🪻🌺2 Questions: What was the name of that stunning flower they showed that people “shouldn’t” be afraid of, if they use their tips!?! Also, what kind of bag did they use for preserving their flowers(name?). I loved the white protea too, so elegant!

Hi there, the flower that frightens some is the Hellebore or Christmas rose. I think the issue might be because their little heads always turn down. Regarding the bags??? I'm not sure, but I will check it out and come back to you. It was like a bio-degradable kind of plastic if memory serves me correctly? Cheers Astar

@womanoftruth hello, as promised I was able to track down the bag used to preserve or safe keep blooms while in transit. Issue I can't fix an image to this platform. Would you or could you DM to @astarsplace on Instagram & I can share the image. Warm regards Astar
