Viiting The Amish through the eyes of a child.
Welcome to The Amish Potato’s Channel. My name is Cj Miller. I was raised Amish in Shipshewana, IN. I was Amish until I was 16 years old, when I started dressing “English”, drove a car and partied on the weekends. This is called Rumspringa.
I did this until I was in my late twenties. I then briefly joined the amish church, left again, and moved to Idaho where I discovered the truth of who Christ is, married my lovely wife and am now sharing my story on RU-vid.
Thank you for watching and enjoy!

Thank you for being respectful of others by not posting their pictures. Not sure why some think it is okay to post anyone's picture without their permission -- then get upset when they are asked to remove it (either Amish or English) . Even some of us English do not wish to have our pictures on the Internet :-)

Aside from personal preference, the law does not require permission to take photographs of anything in public view. I don't suppose you gave the local stores permission to film you in the parking lot. They know it's public. So if you don't want to be seen, hide.
@emmib1388
@emmib1388 Год назад
@@BombaclaatGatofish It is disrespectful to post pictures on the internet without getting permission -- you can't compare film taken in a parking lot that will most likely never be seen by anyone to posting a picture on the internet for all to see and for all to copy and use as they wish. Hello. Nice video. I'm Andrew, a 17 year old ex-Amish. My family and I were Amish 8 years ago. My whole family left and became Mennonite for 2 years, then left that and now we're just regular Christians. My grandparents and most of my aunts and uncles are still old order Amish in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. We visit them every year. Machts gut.

I'm so happy and thrilled about these families that are not shunning Ex Amish.... Family is the most important thing to me and I can't imagine not being able to talk to them and see them...I was raised in a traditional religion and I'm no longer part of it but my family have never shunned me because of my different beliefs and I am so thankful for that!

I so enjoyed seeing this video. Your daughter is lovely. I grew up in Indiana and my great-grandfather had farms in LaGrange County near Howe. The Amish came to harvest the eggs daily from the chickens he owned. I woke up to the clip-clop of the horses and saw the buggies often since he lived around the Amish community. My father was born in 1935 in Sturgis, Michigan, and worked on the farms growing up. He knew the Amish children. I grew up loving the general store near Emma Lake and eating now and then at Essenhaus in Shipshewana--my grandparents called it "Ship see" They have since passed on and are buried in a small cemetery in Topeka, Indiana. We would go to Shipshewana for the sale which used to be every Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you for the memories. I am 66 now. I miss the lovely times we had.

Miranda, thanks so much for sharing about all the fun things you did at your family’s farm. What a wonderful story; What great fun! You sharing about all your fun experiences, made me remember all the fun things my sister and I used to do while visiting my grandparents farm in Missouri. I learned how to milk the cow, feed chickens, and do laundry, in the same way as you! My family wasn’t Amish, but they did everything else pretty much the same. I was a tomboy through and through, so I had a blast playing with my boy cousins running in the fields and playing in the hayloft. They didn’t have a TV either, but I never missed watching one while I was there. Thanks so much for reminding me of so many lovely things 😊! I would love to hear more of your awesome adventures👍

Miranda is right, kids without electronics are a lot more fun to play with then kids who only talk about electronics. Back in 2009-2012 we lived in a tiny farming town (not amish) and it was really fun to just be able to run over to your friends place and spend the day playing outside together.

I found out the hard way not to play "skirmish" with little Amish kids. Stopped at their house in early spring because the mother had her quilts out front for sale even though there was still some snow around. She told the boys to be polite. I found out some stuff about "skirmish". It meant snowball fight. They were more like iceballs. These young boys had perfect aim AND they knew that a 50 yr old guy wouldn't chuck iceballs at little kids. Even though I got a black eye and a sore nose it was still brilliant!!

They always loved visiting and would be worn out from all the fun playing they had with their cousins. My son was also gifted a little Amish boy outfit when he was younger. I also married a man who left the order. Our children were only a year apart and his family asked to keep our daughter when our son was born. Imagine my surprise when we went to pick her up and show off the baby to see her dressed in full Amish dress. His mother said it was a kindness because all of her young aunts were changing her "English" clothes constantly so putting her in Amish dress gave her a reprieve.

When I was a kid about 50 years ago my grandparents introduced us to an Amish family from Shipshewana when they came up to Michigan. I have no idea how they had became friends but they were. Their daughter was close in age to my sister so she spent the night at our house. I remember her teaching my sister and I how she put her hair up in a bun. We also went down to Shipshewana and spent a night at their home. This was a really special experience in my life that I will always treasure.

I will take offense on the 2nd commandment vs pictures. The 2nd commandment (exodus 20, Deutronomy 5) talks about veneration, bowing down and serve them. Things that we should only do for God and nobody else. Having a picture of oneself or family, does not contradict the 2nd commandment.

Thank you for sharing this and narrated by your lovely daughter. It was eye-opening. I liked the part about the electronics. It's very interesting what you have to share. I have to say that your wonderful doggie needs a change in his diet if he's having tummy trouble. Before dry food was invented people fed their dogs from the table. Do the Amish do this? His diet may help him if it's meat and cooked veggies blended up in the blender. If he's been on antibiotics his gut flora has been affected and not sure if a probiotic would help. Thanks again for sharing 😊

I had to chuckle when you mentioned the resources your wife was looking at to discover more about the Amish.😅 The only idea my husband had of what Amish were like was from the movie, “Kingpin.” 😂 It’s a comedy, that stars Woody Harrelson who is a professional bowler who convinces this Amish guy who is pretty good at bowling to drive across the country to Nevada to enter a $1million bowling contest with him to help his family recover their farm. It’s funny, but not an accurate depiction of the average Amish man. 😂

I am a computer guy, allow me be a little geeky here. Lets imagine taking Amish people out of US population and calculate separately. Right now Amish population is 0.35m, and annual growth rate has been steady at 40% every 10 years. US population is 332m, and annual growth rate has been 0.60%. 210 years from now, Amish population would be 410m, and US population (exclude Amish) would be 376m. That means, in 210 years, there will be more than 50% Amish people in US population. In 300 years, there will be 94% Amish people in the US population. I know what you are saying, "Amish can't reproduce in a constant rate", well, I just can't see that slow down that much. One positive out of this is: the crazy liberals that we have today will definite become permanent minority in 200 years (more likely in 130-140 years) , they will die off in 300 years. That's truly something to celebrate. Thank you Amish people, you make the world a better place!
@sadnlonelywithoutmydaughter911
@sadnlonelywithoutmydaughter911 3 года назад
@@seanleith5312 no offense but your calculations are definately off. Also putting an m behind your numbers makes no sense. Are you trying to measure in meters?? People aren't measured that way. Also how familiar are you with the Amish folk?
@seanleith5312
@seanleith5312 3 года назад
@@sadnlonelywithoutmydaughter911 Yes, you are right. I was off by a big margin. The reason I was wrong was because the 40% population increase is over 10 years, not 1 year. I mistaken that data. As a result all the results have to multiple by 10. So, it takes 200 years from now for Amish population to overtake US population. I have corrected my comment. Amish population would not play a noticeable rule politically in next 50 years. However, in 35 years, Amish population will reach 1million. Remember they tend to concentrated in a few states, therefore starting to play a role locally. As to how familiar I am with Amish, the answer is: I don't have to. The research data are publicly available, and my calculation is accurate (this time). By the way, you can search up: Amish population in 100 years. You will find out that it is not just me saying that.

At 11:41... I remember having those washers in Brasil, in the 1970's. I believe ours were electric, though. I remember often getting our little fingers caught in those rollers and it was quite painful.

Actually Southern Charm Ladies Boutique on Harrison doesn't sell candles lol 😂. Lots of "fancy" English clothes, some jewelry and scarves, but Mary Guevara doesn't sell candles. I go to her shop every June when I am up that way to see my oncology specialist over in Goshen.
