If you are visiting central Germany in spring, there are TONS of tips i can give you and put on my travel blogs. But one of my favourite local tips is Castle Tannenfeld (Schloss Tannenfeld) in Löbichau, which is a little East of the city of Gera in Thüringia.
Here, you can find an abandoned castle with buildings in different styles scattered throughout an English style garden with gigantic azalea and rhododendron trees (more than 50 varieties!). And it's absolutely enchanting and still free to visit.
The property has finally been acquired in 2023 and is now being repurposed as a demantia care centre. Not sure what the current timeline is, but definitely visit when you get a chance.
The best time to see the flowers in bloom is late April and early May.
Pro tip: If you don't drive back up the autobahn but cross underneath to the neighbouring community, you can also visit Castle Posterstein. Therer's also a cafe and hotel there. Just wear comfortable shoes for the walk up the stairs.
