The Yank in Sussex and the British Bride visit Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill’s famous home estate, Chartwell. On a recent visit to Kent, we dropped in for an afternoon and went exploring. Chartwell was the home of Winston and Clementine Churchill for over 40 years. It was given to the National Trust by the Churchills, and has been a favorite of visitors since that time.

How wonderful it was to discover a channel of actual tours - well prepared and lovingly presented. Such a difference to the soulless and, in fact, useless recordings of some people's walks - polluted with all sorts of nonsensical noise and bad quality recordings, which occupy a significant part of RU-vid space. Many thank you for your great videos!

Loved it how you’ve picked up our lingo, presumably off your Mrs. Great channel and I’ve enjoyed every one I’ve watched so far / this one in particular. Keep on keeping on👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks so much for this interesting video. My late grandparents always kept a framed photo of Churchill in their hall. Chartwell grounds look so peaceful and must have been such a haven for him during his busy times including during WW11. I imagine him looking across the valley and thinking that this country could not possibly be given up. The ‘Yanks’of course were here later to help us. I was a small child then of course but schools then taught us to love our country. Times have changed but the beauty of Chartwell is still there. Once again Thank you.

My wife's late husband was a great admirer of Churchill also. So we have a few different biographies of him here in the house.

Beautiful! On YT there is a short film of him feeding mealy worms to a Robin beside his much loved goldfish pond. Churchill was fond of animals, he was particularly fascinated by pigs. I think you will find that Chertwell was donated, not sold, to the National Trust. If you visit his birthplace, Blenheim Palace, his grave can be found in nearby Bladon churchyard.

Thank you! But I am reluctantly forced to disagree with the notion that Chartwell was donated to the National Trust. In effect, it could be said to have been donated, but in a strictly legal sense, it was a sale. Though the NT did not pay for it out of its own budget. "In 1946 a group of friends, organised by Lord Camrose, raised the sum of £55,000 which was passed to the National Trust allowing it to buy the house from Churchill for £43,800. The excess provided an endowment. The sale was completed on 29 November. For payment of a rent of £350 per annum, plus rates, the Churchills committed to a 50-year lease, allowing them to live at Chartwell until their deaths, at which point the property would revert to the National Trust."

Very well documented, you certainly put a lot of time and effort into recording and producing this video. I live a few miles from Chartwell in Kent. Kent has been a major invasion point for centuries, and heavily fortified. Invaders or potential invaders include the Vikings, Romans, French, and Germans. All the best Dave.

Indeed it is! I do occasionally post something about other places. Last year the British Bride and I visited Devon, and I posted a video called "From Ilfracombe to Lundy Island". The year before that we visited the Isle of Wight, and I posted a video about our visit there.
