In this video, we are checking out Suomenlinna island in Finland. This island has everything from history, to charm and is one of the coolest things to do in Finland! We absolutely loved everything about this island and it's the perfect little day trip from Helsinki, Finland. We highly recommend this to anyone coming to Finland, and Helsinki :) We hope you enjoy our little video!

And while you were walking on that island, you most likely did not know that it also has an open prison. So, some of the workers you saw might've been prisoners. They have their own apartments, keys to their own doors etc. There are around 100 prisoners in the island, they are all at the end of their sentence and considered to be rehabilitated enough to enter civilian life, the work they do and the freedoms they get are the "soft landing" that gives them healthy routine.

This is super interesting!! There were a lot of people working on the island when we were there. That's such a great way to rehabilitate!

@@JourneywithJenandDrew And the actually get paid for their work. The idea of open prison is that you can work or study outside and you just have to deliver your work/study schedule so that the prison guards know when you have to report back. If you are more interested in the concept, here is a good video about it. And I need to mention that "life sentence" in Finland does not have set maximum length but you can apply to be released after 12 years and it is decided on your conduct. The median "life sentence" in Finland is about 14-15 years. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l554kV12Wuo.html

The Naval Academy still exists in Suomenlinna. It trains officers for the Finnish Navy and about 250 soldiers study there every year. Many people don't know that there is a 1,3 km long narrow tunnel under the sea between Suomenlinna and the mainland. District heating, water and electricity are transferred to Suomenlinna through the tunnel. Also cars can use it, but it's only intended for emergency vehicles and official use. Only one passenger car the size of a van can drive in the tunnel at a time.

Yeah, the military is on the island next to the main island, where you filmed the Finnish flag with the coat of arms in the middle (red base, golden lion).

Actually those little bumpy buildings topped with grass, what looks like Hobbitt houses, are actually inspiration for Tolkien to makes same to LOTR. :) Tolkien was big fan of Finnish epic Kalevala, and he even learned Finnish to read this Kalevala original book.

Nice daytrip. Suomenlinna is definitely a must for tourists especially for them who are interested in history. You had done your homework well with the historic facts :) Around 4:00 Jenna said that she likes that blossoming everywhere. For that you chose the best possible time of the year because in June there are the most flowers in southern Finland. I guess next you're going to Lapland aren't you?
@JourneywithJenandDrew
@JourneywithJenandDrew Год назад
Yeah it feels like we found the perfect timing to visit because we saw so many beautiful flowers and everything was SO green. It was absolutely beautiful :)

@@JourneywithJenandDrew that's true, the contrast here is huge. If I look out from the window to my backyard I see only green. If I do that in January I see only white :D

Loved seeing somewhere outside of Helsinki that makes for a perfect day trip from the city. We were in Norway last October, and it was super expensive. Is that how Finalnd is too? Great video as always!
@JourneywithJenandDrew
@JourneywithJenandDrew Год назад
Oh wow Norway is on our list too😊 It was not too bad but food and especially alcohol was! Also I think winter May be pricier in terms of accommodation (it’s high season) We tried to do an affordable trip and did a lot on our own but most of the adventure tours were expensive.

In my opinion the best castle to visit is "Olavinlinna" its way more medieval, the goat of olavinlinna is also a great legend.

I've known few people who used to live in Suomenlinna at some point. While it is real interesting environment it isn't necessarily best place as due to restrictions (maybe partly because of UNESCO heritage status and other preserving the history) you can't modernize the apartments and that means it is really cold in winters and the wind blows through the walls and all that stuff. :D

Possibly don't say, 'Finland, Sweden, Russia...[meh, whatever]' to a Finn. It's akin to saying, 'New York, LA, Chicago...whatever' 😂 I think you were lucky with the timing of your visit. If there had been several cruise ships in (not the Silja ferry you saw), it would have been packed. However, if you were here over Midsummer (21-23 June), Helsinki would have literally seemed like a ghost town, as most places are closed and all locals are at their summer cabins.
