I visited Fort Macon State Park in May of 2022. This Fort was used from 1826 to 1949. I explore the Fort and talk about its history. I also cover the Battle of FOrt Macon on April 25 - 26, 1862.

at 1:14 it is difficult to see unless you know where to look but there is still a hole in the fort wall from a parrot rifle round. in the same view it is easy to see the newer bricks between the doors. Those "new" bricks were an upgrade recommended by Robert E. Lee when he was just a captain sent to evaluate the fort's condition prior to the civil war. Those parts were knocked out and a rain collection system was installed behind those walls to prevent rain water from pooling on the wall of the fort. They still work and run to the same cistern today. Also the space between the outer wall and the inner wall was designed to be flooded if the outer wall was breached to slow down invaders attempting to get into the inner fort. All but two of the cannons are replicas of cannons that the fort actually had. The two original canons are the mortars seen at 1:22. They were brought in by the union forces after taking the fort. It is unknown if they were used in the siege of the fort by the union forces but it is thought that they were brought in later. The forts ultimate downfall was that: 1. It was designed to take on a naval enemy while being supplied from the rear so most of its artillery faced the sea and there was little to none facing the land behind it. 2. It was built prior to the civil war and the union army had the schematics for the fort it and knew exactly where the powder was stored and thus where to concentrate their fire to set them off.

When did you live in Morehead City? My grandparents and their three children lived there for decades.

My grandmother lived in Atlantic Beach for many years during which time I was able to visit Fort Macon several times. It's been several years since my last visit, so this really takes me back. Were you able to spend any time in Beaufort?

I only spent a few hours in Beaufort. I went to the Maritime Museum and had dinner in town.

I visited the Maritime Museum shortly after they found the Queen Anne's Revenge. They had a nice exhibit about it at the time, pretty cool.
