When we use our handheld radios or the mobile in the car, we really don’t think about or rarely appreciate the hard work and effort is takes to keep a repeater system on the air. Many amateur radio repeater systems are highly engineered but also run on a shoestring. It always amazes me of the amount of technical effort that goes into building and keeping these systems on the air.
Recently I had the opportunity to visit a local repeater site. Our amateur radio club went up to the Mosinee Hill site in North Central Wisconsin to do a little bit of maintenance on the systems located there.

So basically there r just 2 radios hooked up together and make a repeater but the most important is the hight towers antennas that makes everything possible. I was thinking bout getting rt97 portable repeater but now I can see i can make a more powerfull than 10 watt with my mobile 50 watt radio. I just need another radio and duplex and antenna duplexer and power supply , a box and a good height location antenna at my house

An interesting tour, what are those big cylinders in the cabinets and on the sides?

They're called Duplexers. They provide filtering and isolation so that you can run two frequencies (one for receive and one for transmit) on the same antenna.

nice job -- curious what you use to edit your videos (masking sensitive info) -- have been tempted to do more public videos about being in the communications service industry; but, obviously lots of sensitive information that can't be made public...

I use Adobe Premiere for my video editing. It has features that allow for a traveling a mask so you can blur out selective parts of the screen. I'm not sure if iMovie has this feature but it is common on the professional video editing tools.

Always been curious, that electrical bill goes to someone to operate that tower and accessories. The land tax it sits on. Who pays for all that?
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas 6 лет назад
For this particular site, the tower is owned by the local land mobile shop. They make their money off the cell carrier leases and other commercial wireless providers, so they are very gracious to allow us to be on the site. Vertical real estate on a tower can get quite expensive, and it can be quite a challenge for an amateur radio group to find free or cheap space on a tower. Often it's about building relationships and publicizing your worth to the community.

The amateur and GMRS repeaters on Mosinee hill of currently offline. We are in the process in moving the equipment from one tower/building to the other tower/building on the hill. The old concrete building will then be town down and a new structure put in its place. I'm not sure when the GMRS will be back online but we are hoping for the ham stuff to be active by the end of the month- it all depends on when we can get a crew on the tower.

@@KB9VBRAntennas That's the best news I've heard all day. If you need any help. Granted I don't know anything. Let me know.

How do you find if you have a repeater near you ? I mean if you dont know the frequency and nothing shows on google search ? Is there a frequency/pattern/morse signal that shows for example on SDR and you know that that signal is a repeater ?

www.radioreference.com is a great resource for finding both amateur radio and public safety repeaters in your area. Otherwise my video on the 2 meter band: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PXPH6wVHecU.html will be helpful if you are just sweeping the 2 meter amateur radio band for signals.

I am a GMRS user and I am happy to find out where that 675 was located I've been calling out over it without any response if there is any users in the area on it feel free to email me or say hello this is WQXN966

Although I'm not a GMRS user, I do have the repeater in my scan list. There used to be a lot of GMRS activity in the area when the local REACT group was active, but this is no longer the case. I used to hear tons of GMRS activity on the ski hill over the winter, but cell phones killed that traffic. The owner, Rich, works in Stevens Point so you might get a hold of him on the air during drive time.

@@KB9VBRAntennas I only have gmrs repeaters in my scanners because of certain people jamming and thinking that I'm doing it but they're in for a big surprise if they ever continue to do that because I have all my scanners connected to a tape auxiliary output on both the inputs and outputs for the repeater pairs that way I'm covered in case somebody in my area messes around just as they did with my amateur radio callsign by calling in a false fireworks complaint to the local sheriff's department on the radio and because somebody did that and thought it was a joke my license is no longer going to be renewed for ham radio according to Laura Smith from the FCC after a very nasty phone call that I ended up flipping out on her if only I was good enough to listen to other people's advice and never should have gotten a ham radio license and gmrs license in the first place I never would have been picked on because of my autism I know people hated hearing me on the radio because of my monotone voice sometimes repeating what I say and they probably got annoyed and started to take advantage of that and took it in their own hands to make sure I stayed off the radio well they succeeded hope those motherfuckers are happy I hate living in southeastern Wisconsin I can't seem to enjoy anything without getting messed with ask everybody I'm sure everyone's heard about me or don't was of me and told vicious lies and rumors of who I am I know Mike kb9vbr has heard a lot about me from other amateur radio operators I'm sure of he would never tell me of course but that's exactly how people are if they don't like you that will Jam you and do whatever it takes to make you get off the air especially being autistic like I am radio is just no place for anyone autistic!!!!!!!!!!
