In a small town called Buscalan, surrounded by rice fields in the north of the Philippines, lives the worlds oldest tattoo artist, 106 year old Whang-Od. If you take the long trip there you can visit her and get a traditional tattoo! This is our experience.
From Manila we took a 12 hour overnight bus to the town of Sagada. From here we rented a scooter and took a scenic two hour trip to the town of Buscalan. Before the town their is a tourist centre and you need to get a guide to visit the town. It's a 45 minute hike into the town. Before meeting Whang-Od we got some Kalinga traditional Tattoos from some young apprentices. They use thorns from the Pomelo tree to jab you and the ink is just charcoal and water. Finally we got to meet the legendary Wong-Od. The tiny 106 year old tattoos out in the open in a little dirt patch for anyone to observe. She gives everyone her signature 3 dots, symbolizing her and two grandnieces.
The town considers Wong-Od a treasure since she has brought a lot of fortune and prosperity to the community. She is truly a remarkable lady and the most bad ass person in the Philippines!

It's ok to get tattoo from those girls, even if it's their first time, it's still authentic because they're from the same tribe and most are related. And someday they'll be legends too..way back i see 10 yr olds practice their tattoo first time to foreigners too maybe some of them are what you're meeting now
