Airwolf was one of those rare television gems which was shrouded in as much mystique in production as portrayed on screen. There wasn't a lot of PR for the show. It just, "was". Sincerely, thank you for this! It brings back a lot of very fond memories!
This area is called the Superstition Mountains - shrouded in mystery before Donald Belisario (and Steve Cannell) discovered this location - it was used in "Renegade" as well.
Wow!!! This was really great to see the actual filming locations. I Really want to say thanks for sharing this with the Airwolf fans out here in you tube land. The distance from L.A.really makes me appreciate the time it must have taken the film crew to get there and then to get the shots that they used .The actual inside of the lair cave is really amazing to see.👍👍
Airwolf was the greatest television show of the 80s and had the greatest actors and actresses, the likes of Jan Micheal Vincent and Ernest Borgnine and Alex Cord. They were the ones that made the show the greatest on earth 🌍.
This took a lot of searching and attention to details, spectacular work, sir! Thank you doesn't go far enough and for us Airwolf fans, this is PLATINUM!
Thank you! I loved watching the show as a kid, but since I live in Europe I hardly ever got any background information. I have visited Monument Valley and suspected that I saw some locations where they filmed Airwolf- it’s nice to have it confirmed.
Airwolf just never gets old to me! MARS industries is building and selling a well detailed 1/18th scale 29” long Airwolf toy, can’t wait for it to be delivered (already for pre order)!
"How far down does it go?" "I don't know. I never hovered into it before." Thanks for making and posting this to share with us! I've got a little zip-lock baggie of Monument Valley sand that was a perk for subscribing to a fan-based magazine called The Wolf's Lair. It'd be cool to see it in person one day, but this video will have to fill the void until then, lol. The time/distance information made me chuckle. I knew it had to be more than "about an hour" from the "Hollywood and/or String's cabin" area, lol.
That was great! We stayed overnight in Monument Valley in an AirBnB of all places which was quite the experience. Never managed to get to Hidden Arch as we had small kids with us so that was cool to see what it looked like. The Native American lady who hosted us told us about the model too. Was definitely a bucket list trip for my young Airwolf self. Thanks!
Awesome video! Thank you very much for showing us this mystical place for Airwolf fans. For me one of the best series in history that is already 38 years old. Greetings from Argentina!
Awesome video. I now have a deeper appreciation of the skill and detail that went into filming Airwolf. It rises to the level of feature film photography of that era. Thanks.
Wow! that's a great video. Thank you. I knew the lair had to be filmed somewhere around there but never knew exactly where. My cousin used to be a truck driver and actually saw them filming Airwolf briefly when he was driving. I remember him telling me about it during a holiday get together way back then
My friends loved Chevy Camaro's, Me, I leaned more towards the Bell 222. 😂 Even now, almost 40 years later I have the Airwolf blueprints hanging up on my wall.
Dear brother thank you very much from Pakistan. I watched Airwolf in my childhood .... Since childhood it was in my mind that where that film was shot ... Dear thank you so so verrrrrrrrrry verrrrrrrrrry much for this effort of yours . 💕
What gorgeous scenery!! Seeing the locations where Airwolf was shot makes me happy, thank you. I had no idea that those three formations were called "the Three Sisters," but it is good to know.
Wow that was fantastic. Although the hidden arch is not really the Lair it was still mind blowing seeing the hole in the top as you went in. Thanks for filming and sharing, great job.
WOW...that was COOL to see. As an avid fan of Airwolf, I couldn't have been more excited to actually see the filming locations. Nice work my friend. Thanks
Nice video. Remember when i was a kid and this was one of my favorite tv show. I was so young that i always wanted to visit the place to try and find airwolf.. :D
Thank you very much for your video and work! I was searching material about this area and airwolf since a very long time and you are the first person going directly to the places including being inside the arch and the helicopter starting zone. Greetings from Poland
I always watched the show in the 80s on a small tv. Last year I got dvd box set and watched it on my big flat screen. For the first time I got to see the 2nd season premier which had the improved Lair take off/interior shots. I was blown away that I saw that their was Anazai cliff dwellings inside the lair that I couldn’t see on my old tv. It was a great matte painting that still holds up today. Great video! Thanks for sharing this! I have always loved this area since I grew up watching westerns.
Thank you for your time and filming this awesome video. I always wondered exactly where the layer was. Valley of the gods is all came up with lots of searching on the internet. I am quite impressed that the layer wasn't a chimney style like the show, but hey it's always nice to see what it looks like in real life. But the drive in entrance is spot on. Very nice I want to go visit so bad now!! Thank you for sharing this with all of the airwolf die hard fans. Every winter when things are slow I watch the entire series and it never gets old and I am 43 years old. In addition to watching the series I will add this video to it as well! I always wanted to know where red star control was also. Thanks again for your time in filming this. This is the best on airwolf!!!!! You are awesome!!!!
i often wondered about the chimney fly in-out sequence. one little crosswind or twitch in a copter would potentially destroy the butte. thanks for the clarity.
Interesting place, great show of the 80s, most of the cast are gone now: Hawke, Santini, Archangel even the Airwolf helicopter but apparently the Santini Air Jetranger was still around in 2016 and was still painted in the Santini Air colours! 🇺🇸
@@ronaldmorris3197Sadly it's not the real one but a replica. The hero aircraft was sold off to Germany after the show finished and later whilst working as an air ambulance was written off when it crashed in bad weather killing all onboard.
I loved the show Airwolf and the Lady. Its a tie between Knight Rider with K.I.T.T. and Airwolf with the Lady as my all time favorite tv show. Great Video!! ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸 Thanks!
Thank you for posting this video. Back in the day, my dad and I would watch Airwolf every week together, and to see the exterior location where The Lady was based was fascinating!
Matt, same here! One of the few fond memories I have with my father is watching this show! I'm looking forward to seeing and sharing some of the other filming locations in the future!
Watching The Lady rise out of the rocks was a bit like watching a dragon 🐉 wake up from sleep. Would be interesting to know how the writers came up with the idea. Regardless though, it was definitely a good one.
Thanks Will, that was fantastic. Didn't even realise you could visit here, I"ll definitely be looking up the tours your suggested. Great content, thanks again from the UK.
I'm going to post this and it will be the only warning. I have banned several people because the only comment they had to make was about my mask usage. 1. The Navajo Nation has or had a mask mandate in effect at the time this was filmed. Because I was with a tour group I was required to wear a mask and I had no intention on continuously taking off and putting my mask during filming for the few trifling people who troll RU-vid. 2. In the video I mentioned there were high winds that day, this created multiple sand storms. The mask came in very handy for avoiding sand in the mouth, it made sense to keep the mask ready as these storms would appear quickly. If you watched this video and your only takeaway was my mask then keep scrolling. If you comment about my mask I will ban you from my channel, it's that simple!
aaah, yes.... the folks who can only see things through their political blinders. Hard for some to keep out the sand out of their eyes. Just like the Airwolf community, we all are here to do our best to support each other. Great job on this video tour you were so kind to share!
@@andrewpelletier1199 I learned much about people during covid. Things I don't like about the human condition. Covic hit us with little warning. Wearing the mask and getting the Covid shot became a catalyst for being rude and ugly to the people around us. I'm grateful I wasn't cursed with a strong opinion one way or another. We started calling people, "sheep". After hearing that word spread like wildfire, I got to thinking: I am a sheep. I am one of God's sheep. His sheep knows his voice. I want that to be said about me, that I hear his voice and I do his wishes. I still today don't know what was right or wrong with the mask and the shot, but I do know God's love for us still reigns supreme.
As a huge AW fan as a kid growing up in the U.K. ( Scotland) this is brilliant. Could have done with a few more stills from the show, it must be allowed on utube as watched people do a good few film locations and they are able to show a Godoy few pictures of the scenes. But none the less excellent research and execution to show us.
Thanks for the tour! Even back in the day, the idea there was a cave or whatever out in the wilderness you could leave a expensive helicopter and have it safe from tourists…. ;)
Oh damn! So I was a kid when I saw the show. Microsoft Flight Simulator just added the Bell 222b (it has an Airwolf paint job but it's missing some details due to copyright I'm sure). The first thing I did was go to Monument Valley and put on the Airwolf music and take off. I didn't consciousnessly know this was Airwolf's home. It just seemed right.
I watched this video a year after you posted it. Thanks for the info. I've always known that the show lair was filmed in monument Valley not California because I'm from this area. I've been here all of my adult life and have never made it out to where you filmed. I'm a retired LEO from Navajo PD and have been assigned to assist Kayenta district numerous times. It has never led me out to that area. When I did drive that way, it was always night shift and I could not see anything anyway. I never knew the exact spots or the exact names of the filming locations until I watched your video. Thank you. I really do have to get out there sometime before it's too late.
It's a beautiful area, Ive been there a few times before but this was my first visit to those areas. Hoping to move to Arizona in a few years so I'm looking forward to another visit!
One thing about the show that made me laugh ever time was, they would be in L.A. ( Van Nuys ) and drive out there in like 20 minutes. Airwolf by far the most popular TV show vehicle/craft every created. Certainly the most popular in the Hobby World !
Thank you. The truth about the lair is both fascinating and slightly disappointing. The truth of the rock formations fits right in with the fantasy of a super sonic combat helicopter disguised as a civilian Bell 222.
Heeeeyyyyy that's so great to see the real places in monument Valley :) thank you so much for that nice vid! I really loved the Airwolf series back in the 90s, and during the lockdown I got myself the whole DVD stuff and watched it several times ;) still love it!
Thanks for explaining the magic. I imagine they went with "Valley of the Gods" instead of "monument valley" because it just sounds better between the two options.
Thank you for doing this. I always wondered if it was Monument Valley. Thunderbird Mesa is the exterior for the rise of Airwolf? That is so perfect! 😯👍🤘
So every time they hopped in a jeep to "go get the lady" as they really liked to say towards the end, they were actually driving an 11 hour drive to get from Van Nuys to southern utah/northern arizona? lol
That was a brilliant video and brought back many memories as I used to watch airwolf when I was a kid and I always thought the lair was real but it just shows how good they are with tv magic to convince you it is real I have the series on dvd and thank you for bringing back memories and well done on a brilliant video 👍😊
I live in Phoenix so this is a easy enough visit for me and Airwolf wasmy favorite show back in the 80's, well till they used the new crew. Do these tours actually talk about Airwolf filming location?
Not the tour I was on, in fact they weren't even aware of the filming for Airwolf,i told the tour guide about the different locations so maybe now they will!
