Hi all, I seem to be getting spammed on the comments section of this video! You may get a comment which is obviously not from me but with my picture. Please don't reply to it, and apologies, I'll report it!
Just a few comments.... Firstly, that abandoned village on Spike was connected to the Fort. It housed the families of married British Army or Barracks personnel (single men stayed in the Barracks). Their children had to be ferried across to Cobh, to school, each day. When a child turned 18, they had to leave the island. Secondly, the Lusitania was sunk 8 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, but the bodies were brought to Cobh/Queenstown. The Courtmacsherry Lifeboat was the closest and set out from Broadstrand, in what was actually a rowing boat. By the time they got out there, they were collecting bodies. Thirdly, my granduncle was one of the 123 who boarded the Titanic, but unfortunately he drowned.
Thanks so much Steve. I just found this and Timely to say the least. My wife and I are going on a 10 day trip to Ireland (8/days there)/in the middle of April. Kinsale is on our itinerary but now we will make it a point to spend a day in Cobh. My grandparents were all from County Cork and I can’t wait to get back to my roots. I’ve always been drawn to the sea and now I know why. Thanks for an awesome guide! Jim from Brooklyn, NY.
Hi Steve. 😊 I was in Southern Ireland away back in 1991, when I was a young man. I was travelling about by train. I reached Cork City, and then took the rails as far west as I could, to Tralee. I saw the name Cobh, at Cork station, but back then I had no idea it had been where the Titanic sailed from, or even been known as Queenstown. There is also a Queenstown in my home country of New Zealand😊 Anyway that was a lovely poignant video
We have just returned from visiting Cork and Cobh with inspiration from your video. We stayed at West Beach Guesthouse and mentioned your name. Mary remembered you from last year. We even stayed in the same room and got our croissants from Mary. Mary was such a lovely host. Cork and Cobh such lovely places too and the people so friendly. Thanks Steve. Love your videos.
Oh, for fun, Steve. I will someday go to Cobn, I will. I think my heart is in Ireland. Merry Ann from Minnesota p.s. It was fun to see the choir from Minnesota
Hi Steve. Loved your video (subscribed). The first time we visited Ireland was 23 years ago with our two sons. They were 21 and 22 at the time. Now, we'll be returning to Ireland this June (2023). Except, this time we will be with our two sons and their families. A total of ten of us (including four grandkids) will be in Ireland for ten days. My wife and I are looking forward to seeing Ireland again, but this time through our grandkid's eyes - ages seven to sixteen. Last time we were in Cork we looked in a phone book for our family name (Sullivan). We were happy to see the Sullivan name was so well represented.
Oh that was a wee trip down memory lane. My mum took me on sailing holidays to cobh when I was in my early teens right up to early twenties in the 90s. Spike Island was still a prison. I remember beaching there once and being very careful to stay below the tide line as to not get in trouble from the guards that came rushing along the road. There are many other stories but one I think involved the Roaring Donkey!!
Fantastic video of my home town Cobh and my first home Spike Island! Thank you for coming to visit us and showing everyone why we love it so much and..... there is plenty more to see there so come back for another visit!
Glad you enjoyed your stay Steve, i used to live in Cork city and enjoyed many a day out in Cobh. Pairc Ui Chaoimh is a hurling stadium also used for Gaelic football. Next time your in Ireland you should try Waterford city or Dungarvan in the neighbouring county of Waterford.
Steve, Greetings from New Jersey again you have found interesting places the globe at the cathedral the tragic harbor the beautiful town and of course the Roaring Donkey 😉
Well done once again! I've decided I don't need to travel as old as I am. I can just wander around with you. It's a lot easier on my old body and my old pocketbook. Besides, if I went in person, I wouldn't get the wonderful descriptions of the places that I get from you. Say hi to Alicja for me. Be well, stay safe, travel Lots, love from Texas.
Ahh thanks! Definitely a return trip in the making already. I was on a Kinsale bus at one point, if I'd fallen asleep maybe I'd have seen the fishing port!
My Great Grandfather grew up in Queenstown now Cobh. He immigrated to the U.S.A. via Scotland in about 1884. His original trade was merchant ship Captain. He later became a head salesman for a manufacturing firm in the U.S.A.
In todays money, for a 2 room suite on Titanic would cost over £40,000!!!!! I have an original Newspaper from April 1912.... Fascinating to read...... Cobh does look like a great place to visit, you have the ability to make the places you visit really special... Great stuff Steve..... Did you save a Guinness for me??? :-))
Another good one mate. I'm sure I remember that infamous episode of Wish You Were Here when Judith Chalmers said she'd only had one hour's sleep and needed a nap before checking out the local Guinness :p
Hello Steve from Sydney Australia thanks for this fantastic video I visited Cobh when i sailed from Sydney on a 105day World cruise in 2017. It was a highlight of my voyage Loved the place. Princess cruises call there on every world cruise and the locals put on an Australian day celebration to welcome the ship I am due to call there again if next years cruise happens, because of Covid the last 2 years have been cancelled You have shown me lots of things to explore Thanks from a fellow Scot living down under
Oh Ian I'd LOVE to do a voyage like that! Aye, I believe Cobh welcomes around 100 cruise ships per year, what a great wee town and love the sound of the Australia Day celebration :)
@@steve-marsh Hi Steve thanks for replying I was born in Stirling and lived in Elgin and Perth before emigrating to Australia Have been back to Scotland a few times but Covid halted my travels I am booked on next year’s world cruise that stops at many Uk ports Greenock being one and a ships tour takes me to see the Falkirk Wheel and 3 hours free time in Stirling. Having watched your previous presentation on there i know where I’ll go Well done Keep it going Cheers
Delighted to see you've come in my direction Steve! Cobh is lovely and I'm lucky enough to live within cycling distance. Also delighted to be heading for a trip in the opposite direction next weekend. Looking forward to exploring Edinburgh!
Another interesting video, great to see the Spitfire that was at the entrance to RAF Turnhouse, first time I ever flew was from there in a RAF Chipmunk with Paisley Air Traing Corps a brilliant experience.Cobh looks a great place to visit for a longer visit.
First time watching. I can say why the comments are so positive. I like your choices and your commentary is SO personable had relaxed and interesting. an exemplary vlog. Thank you ! From Somerset in the South West of England.
Steve I have a tear in my eye 🥲I’ve always wished to go to Ireland, but sadly never had the opportunity, would loved to have visited my husbands step dads family, but Scotland has been my saving grace as you know, and I’ve never encountered any dangerous pidgins! I have enjoyed this tour with the history that goes with it…. Titanic & Lusitania very, very sad indeed! I was impressed with your mini accommodation for your overnight stay, if I downsized I could probably live in something like that….The Roaring Donkey looked a welcoming pub! fabulous tour Steve with fantastic views and great commentary as always, So pleased you survived the ‘Titanic’ see you next time then! 👍
So glad you enjoyed it just as much as me Bernice :) There's just something about Ireland I can't quite put my finger on, but I sure feel relaxed and happy when there :)
Hi Steve, I am becoming like a broken record whenever I see our epic journeys. Absolutely brilliant the way you show off all these new adventures. Thanks as always. Safe travels.
The summer of 2019, my daughter and I passed through Cork going from Waterford to Killarney, but our tour didn’t stop there, much less Cobh. As we didn’t get to visit County Tipperary either (where my ancestors came from), I’ll have to add it to the list for my dream return trip!
Just magnificent, I find myself becoming a little envious of your journeys and can't wait to get back there and do some my self, thank you so much and stay safe. Cheers.
Great video. I'm really tempted by Cobh. As it happens, my daughter is taking her son and one of her nieces to Cork this every evening and I know they plan to visit Cobh, so it's been wonderful to see what it's like so that I can visualise their trip.
Fantastic tour I have heard about Cobh what a lovely place it is to visit now you have shown me x hope your legs have recovered thanks Steve I really enjoy your adventures
Amazing short money spent for a cool jaunt and visit - and to a different country no less!! I can’t imagine a cool trip like that happening here in USA for such little money 😳🤦♀️🤷♀️💰💰💰Thanks for regularly sharing your epic days out and the inspiration they provoke 🥇
So much contrast in one small town, the beauty of the globe and the colourful facades of the house compared to the sadness of jfk, Lusitania and the titanic pier, I can imagine the ‘last walk’ of the prisoner through those dark tight corridors. So glad your practising for New Year’s Day 2,023 steps. You’ll make it
I was in Cobb in October 1995 but didn't spend much time there. I did see the memorial to the Titanic and one for all the Irish, largely sponsored by Irish-Americans, who left there to come to America. My father's ancestors came from a town near Cork, and probably left from Cobb (Queenstown) in 1840, before the Great Famine, to Boston, later setting in central NY State.
Loved this video Steve.I have always had a fascination about the Titanic so this was a great insight into the history of its leaving Ireland.I'm binge watching your videos at the moment as I love your down to earth but humorous commentary and the fantastic content.Best wishes.
Another fine trip. Have never been but seen many documentaries where the cathedral looks so dominant on the skyline. Great too see more of this little town as it seems well looked after. Allan.
@@steve-marsh My brother lives there, and the Roaring Donkey is his local, the reason I spent many a night there lol. My last trip I bought three American friends of mine over and they really enjoyed Cobh.
Awesome that Steve. We've been just along the coast to Kinsale a couple of times which is a cracking wee place but have never explored east of Cork. We're definitely going to visit Cobh someday though as it looks gorgeous so thanks for the heads up. On our last Kinsale trip we drove the Ring of Kerry which was spectacular and right up your street. We also did a fab whale watching trip out of Baltimore with Whale Watch West Cork and it was amazing as we saw loads of dolphins and a few minkies. Nic Slocum and his crew really look after you on his boats so that's very much recommended too 👍
Super mini break, I love this sort of "holiday", even though its just a couple of days it always seems longer, I wonder why? Thanks again Steve for taking us on an away day!
Great video Steve , I only went there for the day from Belfast to visit the White star line office and wished I had set aside more time as I did not realise how much there was to see there but intend going again but with more days to explore properly .
I never realized how much history this town has now I will have to visit Ireland as well as return to Scotland. You do a better job than any tourist board Steve. Keep them coming now time for a cuppa ☕
Welcome to Ireland 🇮🇪!! My home country , so glad you enjoyed your visit what a brilliant video as per usual really enjoyable hopefully you will pop over again in the future for another trip 👍👍👍
@@steve-marsh …Dingle Co Kerry my favourite place & area ti visit. Also Galway City on the west coast , & Co Donegal in the north west. Lots to research indeed 👌👌
