Costa explores a garden on 5 hectares of Dharug and Gundungurra land in the World Heritage-Listed Blue Mountains. Subscribe 🔔 ab.co/GA-subscribe
Owner: National Trust NSW
Head Gardener: Simon Cooper
Location: Dharug and Gundungurra Country, in Leura, NSW
Climate Zone: Cool Temperate
Garden established: 1930s.
Style: Exotic and native gardens in a steep hills setting with terraced levels.
Key Features:
At about 1,000m above sea level the climate is always cooler than Sydney and the coast, so it supports many old-world cold climate plants. There are seasonal displays of cherry blossom, tulips and autumn colour.
The garden was designed by Paul Sorenson in the 1930s and it’s the best-known of the hundreds he designed.
It was built as a weekend retreat for Belgian entrepreneur Henri Van de Velde.
There are many beautifully crafted stone walls, stunning views, and interesting mature trees.
There is a natural watercourse on the site with a waterfall flowing into a pool that was created by damming the waterway with a huge 40-tonne rock that looks like it’s always been there.
There is an alpine area, some lovely walking paths, a reflection pool and a naturalistic area with maples alongside a meandering stream that Sorensen created after being inspired by Japanese garden designs.

I've been watching Gardening Australia for years now, pretty much one year shorter than Costa's been the host. And offsetting all tips and advice by six months since I live in subtropical Florida, US. So you can imagine my excitement when I read the Everglades title, my mild disappointment when I see the garden looks nothing like the Everglades and my amusement while I am laughing at the idea of slopes in the Everglades!
