Visiting Yosemite National Park on the First Day it Reopened After the Shutdown

Yosemite National Park has been closed for the last 10 weeks due to California state shutdowns from the pandemic. They began reopening on June 11th by allowing only a certain amount of cars access each day. My dad and I were able to get a vehicle pass and visit the park on opening day. It was a magical time to visit Yosemite with not a lot of people and something I will never forget. This video shows the entire day we spent in the park.

I had a similar experience in June 2017. I was hiking the PCT and made it to Tuolumne Meadows before the Tioga Road opened. We hung out and camped there for almost 24 hours, with not a single car and barely another person to be seen. It was surreal and beautiful.

So awesome, I can't even imagine getting to see Yosemite in fully tranquility and glory, the way John Muir saw it. This year is THE year to see the national parks. No loads of foreigner tour buses, no traffic jams, no busy trails, it's a wonderful thing caused by terrible circumstances. I'm headed to Yellowstone and Grand Teton here in a few weeks, hopefully both will be as empty as this 🤞🏼

Thank you for posting! In 2018, I went on Amtrak from Texas to Southern and Northern California by myself. Yosemite was the main reason and my first time. Unfortunately, it was a quick 2 hour guided tour since I didn't know my way and for safety reasons. No time for trails, bridges, no driving thru the tunnel. The Yartzs bus and the train was my transportation. Your video gave me the opportunity to see what I wasn't able to. I plan to go back to see it all when my ailing elderly father no longer needs my assistance. It will be a be a great way to honor his memory since he used to take my Mom, siblings and I every summer to California. My father is 90 now and I wish I can take him to California one more time before he passes but he's too frail. I tried to the year before but he had a heart attack the day before we were going to leave. I used our tickets to go to Yosemite alone. It broke my heart to realize I can never take my father to any trips anymore. Rest in peace Mom. 🙏💞 Enjoy as many trips with your father when you can. We are not promised tomorrow and can be gone in an instant, anytime any day.

Yosemite smells so good too. I can still remember how good it smells. I am so grateful for all the vacations I was able to spend in Yosemite. Absolutely amazing you could do this with your dad! I had a Wilderness Permit that I didn’t cancel and was lucky to get into the park on June 6th. We started on June 7th, camped in Little Yosemite Valley, did Half Dome and walked out Thursday on the JMT. Not good at videos but have some really awesome photos. I'm from California and I've been to Yosemite. I still think the Alps are the prettiest mountains in the world. In America we sometimes use the term "Alps (of..)" to describe pretty mountains. The Sierra Nevada range in California, including Yosemite, is sorta like the unofficial "Alps" of the USA, and it's also the longest continuous mountain range with the tallest peak in the lower 48 US States.

Thank you for posting this video. I’ve lived in California all of my life but I had never visited Yosemite. When I saw this video, I showed it to my husband and we decided that now was the time to go. It was amazing! An experience that our family will never forget.

Thanks for spending a little time in this video just letting us listen to the awesome sounds of nature for a bit. We've tried December and February in the past for smaller crowds, but it was nothing like this. Thanks for sharing this experience with everyone.

Beautiful shots. Especially intrigued by the portion when you just let us listen to the sounds of the park, was amazed how those distinct sounds can make you feel like you are there.

Honestly, the most comprehensive but still short & sweet park tour I've seen. Very well explained with short notes at each stops.

Got to admit I'm feeling jealous! Wow, what a treat you and your dad got on that visit - really privileged visitors, super VIPs! And that lunch spot - no money could buy such a view! Thanks for sharing your pleasure and joy.

Thanks Josh for this stunning video, my wife and I are from England and we visited Yosemite in 2018. My background picture on my laptop is exactly where you and your dad had lunch. I absolutely cannot wait until we can travel to California again. If ever you visit the UK I'll buy you a beer. 👍🍺

Just saw your video on July 4, 2020. Your video showed many of the amazing views in Yosemite. Half Dome Indian maiden's face is in the sheared off portion. What a treat it was for me to view how surreal Yosemite can be with less visitors. Great treat with the bear running across meadow. Wow. Your descriptions were perfect. So glad you and your dad got to make memories and to share them with many. Thanks so much.

Your video was excellent and gorgeous. My husband and I visited about two years ago after a long hiatus and though the views were still amazing, the traffic and the parking, especially in the valley, was awful and challenging. How fortunate for you both that you got that permit to enter and you got to see most all the places you wanted to see. You've given me some great suggestions of places to go and see and I will be checking more out soon, when I get my camper van out of the shop. My husband passed last year, so when I do travel, it will be on my own, but there is so much to see that I can't resist.

This is honestly just one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. One more thing it's so great to see you having that great time with your dad, don't get me wrong but I really jealous, wish that I had this opportunity. Beautiful but at the same time very sad for me as I've lost my father so soon. Best wishes to you and your dad! Really, speaking from my heart man. And also hope I get to see this all by myself once. Like from me and I'd give it ten more if I could.

thank you. i love Yosemite and visited it over 17 times. Once I was lucky enough to be there when there was only 50 people in the park when it flooded once and they closed it then opened it for a few hours before closing it again. Empty Yosemite is a blessing to all who get to experience it. I'm glad that you got the blessing! Thank you for sharing that blessing because Yosemite is now only memories since I have left California. Thank you for re-awakening those memories.
