We were at Wallaloo Park Poll Merino stud near Marnoo in Victoria recently to complete the final wool assessments in young sheep prior to shearing. Georgia Buchholz had completed the majority of the scores the week prior to this visit but we took the opportunity with the team being close by to complete the last assessments quickly with Phoebe Eckermann and Mark Ferguson assisting Georgia. Fantastic facilities at Wallaloo Park with Proway yards throughout including the great Proway bulk handlers which made this job a fair bit easier.
The mob in the video is the bottom third of the Autumn drop ewe lambs with the better ewes that have been mated as ewe lambs going through earlier in the day. The traits being scored were Wool Character, Wool Colour, Dust penetration and Fleece Rot - Character, Colour and Fleece Rot will all be converted into a breeding value via the MerinoSelect analysis in Sheep Genetics and be used to aid selection. All of the 2023 progeny at Wallaloo Park have now been scored for these traits prior to shearing.
