Some of the hostages are at present in Egypt. Hamas moved some of the remaining hostages to Egypt through tunnels located in Rafah Border Crossing. Some of the hostages, who were released in the first prisoner swap (November 24- December 1st), had been forced to swallow different kind of drugs before being freed. Those drugs had been developed in Russia, Iran and North Korea during the Cold War (1947- 1991) in order to punish spies and POWs. The most benign of these drugs make hostages docile. The most evil of them alters severely the brain functions. A good example of this could be seen in the case of Otto Warmbier. Otto was falsely accused of a crime in North Korea. During his imprisonment, he was given drugs (by mouth and intravenously) which altered severely his brain functions. He was released in a terrible condition, and died a few days after his arrival to the United States. In case of a second prisoner swap, Hamas has the order to give the most evil drugs to some of the remaining hostages.

Intentional targeting as a warcrime was invented after ww2 to prevent things like the London Blitz and Dresden Germany and hasn't been updated to include questions like "how much is too much", and using a bomb just big enough to do "that thing". Old news, NYT. This has always been the modus operandi of "the most moral army on Earth" (TM). In 2006, Human Rights Watch reported the following on Israel's war on Lebanon: "Israel has justified its attacks on roads by citing the need to clear the transport routes of Hezbollah fighters moving arms. Again, none of the evidence gathered by Human Rights Watch, independent media sources, or Israeli official statements indicate that any of the attacks on vehicles documented in this report resulted in Hezbollah casualties or the destruction of weapons.Rather, the attacks killed and wounded civilians who were fleeing their homes, as the IDF had advised them to do." So now in 2023 the NYT wakes up and smells the coffee. What do you want? A medal?

@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx I was born in the USSR, so I'm pretty sure that my take on this might be slightly more refined than a random Western selective admiration of Trotsky. Stalin was the final "evolution" of the so called "Socialism" in Russia. It may have started with good intentions really, and it was all about "equality", "equity" and all the other well meaning and unachievable high ideals, followed by systemic elimination of everyone who questioned those high ideals, followed by paranoid elimination of everyone who was reported as allegedly having ideas, that questioned the regime and so on and so forth. Because as long as there is a hierarchy, "Some animals will always be more equal than others". Orwell said it better, but you get my point :) The nowadays West is toying with an idea that failed miserably in the past, regardless of the endless funds invested in it by the Soviets back in the day and endless lives lost in the name of it and as a result of it. Not sure if they do it due to lack of understanding, sheer hubris or both. To me, Socialism is like a nuclear suitcase and the Progressive West is like a baby, toying with it, pressing all the buttons and having wild tantrums, every time somebody tries to take that shiny new "toy" away from them, but not willing to take any responsibility, if god forbid they ever press the wrong button..
@@kobman4159 It could be that your personal experience of the Stalinist regime in the dying years of the Soviet Union colours your view of Marx and socialism. It is strange that you think the "nowadays West" is considering socialism, when our governments have never been more right wing and committed to viciously capitalist ideology. If you look around you, what do you see? Success of capitalism with united societies, workers paid well and in control of their lives, governments responding to their people? Obviously not. Socialism is not what was even tried in the USSR after the mid-1920s when Josef Stalin seized control. It is about liberating the working class to have power and control over our working lives, our commerce, our institutions, everything that we are. Capitalism is the antithesis: it forces us to work for a wage, to bow the knee to our employers in undemocratic workplaces where the vast wealth we create is stolen to enrich a few. If you refuse to believe that can be changed, then stay as you are. Did the end of the Soviet Union and its replacement with a red-in-tooth-and-claw free market capitalism result in any improvement in the lives of the Russian working class - as the Western economists claimed it would? Living standards plummeted, crime ran rampant and a privileged few enriched themselves on the remnants of the Russian state.
