*Elizabeth talking about the fireplace kiss* "there was this brilliant moment....it was going on for quite a while...ages...I mean we were having a lovely time anyway-" I will never understand how actors and actresses don't fall for each other in real life
@marvel nephilim This might be the year she could get a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for "Widows". Reviews of her performance has been favorable and her name always seems to be tossed around.
Gemma's voice... OMFGOSH! 😍 No words... And Elizabeth is amazing, everyone is talking about her. But also Gemma is pretty wonderful (no only physically), we should give her more credit. I mean, in this case Vita is likely treating as an extra character but she was a main one in real life.
I read Orlando and it almost felt like I was reading someone's diary. So expressive and so weird. Then a few years later, I heard of this film and thought I hd to watch it. The first forty five minutes made me uncomfortable, felt disconnected and couldn't really understand Vita's obsession with Virginia. But idk, Elizabeth Debicki must be one hell of an actor, because by the end of it I was so immersed. I was actually recommending it to my best friend because the last half hour is absolutely fabulous.
Vita was a bit of a collector of women, Virginia was a much better writer and a member of a literary set ( the Bloomsbury group) that was condescending. Culturally a bit of a scalp.
both gemma and elizabeth played their roles incredibly, if vita made you uncomfortable with her chasing of virginia then gemma did a good job there too
Ok I need to. I have to… point out the chemistry between Gemma and Elizabeth. Agh. The unique expressions of joy and energy exchange with one another!!!
Right there with u, gf. ❤️ That moment when Liz strokes Gemma's back is, Whuutttt?? 🥰 What we don't know or will never experience re: the performing arts ...
Ms. Button 's speech at the end regarding the marriages of both women. Their marriages were their anchors allowing them to pursue their writing. Mrs. Wolff 's husband, Leonard, published novels by both women. Although, Mrs. Wolff 's novels I are now acknowledged as influential and great, at the time of their publication, Vita Sackvill-West's works outsold her friend/lover's works.
this was so wonderful to watch, and the film was too. i wish i had someone to share my passion with -- someone that finds the film and this Q&A as enthralling and lovely as I did.
Elizabeth is such an amazing actress when I found out it was her in great Gatsby I was shocked j didn't even recognize her, that's how you know an actor is good hahaha
I love that two women who played Virginia Woolf in film were both Australian. It would be interesting to see Elizabeth Debicki and Nicole Kidman sit down in an interview setting and talk about their experiences of playing VW.
Vita was very busy: many partners and parallel relationships. Virginia needed loyalty and support which she got from Leonard. She was passionate emotionally but not sexually.
(Okay I'll take this to bracket but like when Elizabeth's hand wanders down on Gemma's back and then Elizabeth takes it off and sort of realizes where she is and she's like "no I need to concentrate...fuck concentrate..." and shakes her head a little... Don't tell me that's not gay... :D 24:05, play it in a loop!)
Which is funny cause if you watch some of her old videos, Cate has quite a "girlish" voice (can't think of any other word to describe it, don't know any technical terms, high pitched maybe? sorry) while Elizabeth has already an incredible voice being young. I think Cate's changed not only bc of age but bc of smoking as well; still a hell of a beautiful voice tho, I love their voices ❤
I love only the acting of Elizabeth and the music . And there's not much chemistry between two actresses. I am impressed by every act of Elizabeth as Virginia Woolf but feels like the other actress is acting in different movie. The plot and script are flawed. If not, this would be a great movie.
their chemistry is incredible and i think vita is so separate to virginia it might seem that she’s distanced but isn’t that the point that vita doesn’t fit in
the movie had so much room for improvement. The sets were boring, nothing remarkable about them. and the actresses lacked chemistry. Gemma carried the movie imo ❤️
I watched the film last night at the BFI at last. I’m a huge admirer of VW and was looking forward to watching this. Alas, perhaps one of the worst, most banal and cliché films I have ever seen. The actresses and actors are wonderful, but the script, dialogues, plot, visualisations, are pathetic. It’s a shame, I was dying to love it.
Chanya Button was the wrong director for this movie. How do you fu*k up such wonderful material?!??! So poorly executed. Thinks it is "feminist" and "queer" but is actually heteronormative bullish*t.
elaborate. I saw nothing but greatness; where is this lack of feminism and queerness?? i thought it was there -- they even had the decency to bring in Virginia's troubles with physical intimacy. if that isn't feminism then what is
