Have you ever heard that a lack of motivation, mood swings, or even feeling unsatisfied after meals could be linked to vitamin D deficiency? When I first learned about the connection between vitamin D and dopamine, I was just as surprised as you might be. But research is clear: vitamin D plays a crucial role in emotional balance and motivation, especially for those navigating grief.
In this video, I talk about the importance of getting your vitamin D levels tested - whether through your GP or with an affordable home test kit (vitamindtest.o.... If you're grieving, it's even more essential to ensure your levels are optimal, especially as we head into the colder, darker months.
⚠️ Government guidelines suggest 400 IU of vitamin D per day, but that’s far too low to help with mood swings, low motivation, emotional balance, or proper immune function, especially during winter. Most people need much higher amounts, anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 IU depending on factors like body weight, sun exposure, and any autoimmune conditions. So, make sure you know your baseline vitamin D level and start supplementing accordingly.
Key Takeaways:
1. Get Tested: Aim for at least 100 nmol/L for optimal health. Most GPs consider 50 nmol/L ‘normal,’ but that’s often not enough for immune support, preventing bone loss, or your mental well-being.
2. Higher Doses Matter: To maintain emotional balance during grief and improve your mood, you may need much higher doses of vitamin D3 than the current guidelines suggest.
3. Combine with K2: Taking vitamin D3 without vitamin K2 can increase the risk of calcium build-up in the walls of blood vessels. K2 helps direct calcium into the bones, improving bone and heart health in the process.
4. Don’t Forget Magnesium: Emotional stress depletes magnesium levels, which are essential for activating vitamin D in the body. I recommend magnesium glycinate, which is also easy on the stomach and available from trusted sources like the Natural Dispensary.
Evidence suggests that the best ratio of vitamin D3 to K2 is around 1000:10. This means it’s best to choose a vitamin D3 & K2 supplement that provides 10 mcg of vitamin K2 for every 1000 IU (25 mcg) of vitamin D3.
