i heard this song today by chance. a song that hits the soul. I can't put it into words. this song and the melody is so beautiful .. my eyes are getting wet
can be explained by voice-activated playback. He holds the mic far enough that it only faintly activates the playback and gets louder as he moves it closer to his mouth. The vocals are absolutely identical to the studio version.
Frank Lin With all my respects but, what an annoying person you are.... You appear on every single video of him in concert saying exactly the same tho... What is you propose with that? Do you win an award with it? Why you have so much obsession proving he does playback? Go find another hobby or something, this is consuming you... Of course he does playbak sometimes, as EVERY singer does. Could you sing what he sings for a half and an hour straight? Of course not, no person can do that. And if he did, he would damage and break his voice probably for ever. He doesn't sound exactly the same as in the studio version in every song. He doesn't do playback on every song and concert. The microphone system you don't stop saying, what's its name? Did they tricked all the microphones around the world he had sung in? Because you can see is not the same at all in every concert. What kind of technology must it be to work with such a precision that only knows when the singer voice is singing even though is far away, so it barely activates the playback, but hey.. it only detects the singer's voice, it does not get confused with the background noise... Come on, you could have been more logical on that. And this was at the beginning of the 2000, in many European countries we barely started having internet at home (I didn't had until 2010 so...) You can't stop saying that it's impossible to sing the same notes as the studio version, look, I'm in the music industry for many years now, since I was a kid and I know how this singing world works. In many occasions we've tried to prove that it is possible to hit the exact same notes and duration in different days and situations as in a previous recorded version. It's not easy, but it's completely possible with practice and talent, and those who proved it are just regional singers from my town, so imagine Vitas with all his experience as a singer, he can perfectly do it if he wants to. I wanna add something, by the way you speak you seem to be from the USA or the UK (maybe I'm wrong), you might know that depending on the country the culture changes, right? Well, the perception of music and art it's pretty different in many countries of Europe. We do appreciate when a singer is able to sing as close as the studio version in a concert. After all, we liked what we herad on the CD so when we pay to hear it live we expect to hear the same but face to face. (Of course there are exceptions, but I tell you as a real cultural fact). I've been in many concerts where the singer (usually from the USA) changed notes and even the lyrics, and I know that's pretty normal and how most of singers from USA and UK proves their talent of singing live. And a lot, and I repeat, A LOT of people were leaving on the middle of the show very disappointed with that technic. Maybe we are close minded with it... But that's why many singers from Russia, Romania, Spain, Italy, etc... Specially back then tried to sing as close as the recording. Now with all the globalization and internet this things are changing, same as the art perception. But there are still people who prefers the "classic" style from here, for exple my brother, he absolutely hates when the artist changes in the live version so he said that seeing what singers do nowadays he won't go to any other cconcert ever again... Probably Vitas was instructed to do this, to be a virtuous, able to sound practically the same as the studio version, that's why he's very appreciated in Russia and other west/south European countries. Also, in this song for example, he was pretty young, and he could perfectly hit those notes without problems, now he uses more playback because he's older and his voice is not as "new" as before to hit those high and clean notes, he arrives to lower ones and for a shorter duration. But he stills being Vitas, and he was instructed with that technic and art, so he requires more lipsync now so it does not disappoint his usual fans and national style art appreciation. As you can see, anyone really cares when he does playback nowadays, we just enjoy him, by the fact that you enjoy him not just by his voice but by his movements, expressions, interpretation, he's a piece of art himself. He's a prodigious, nobody can deny it. Being said, I hope you understand that art and talent isn't the same in all cultures. This wasn't the start of a discussion, don't bother yourself in trying to write proves that he does playback on every song, with videos, audios, etc... I've already read your comments. Bye, take care, and invest your time in other things that makes you feel great, don't waste your time with this obsession, life's short and we only have one here, just enjoy and let others enjoy whatever they wanna enjoy.
Like it or not, when you make comments you are participating in a discussion. Not meaning to annoy you about that, but it's what I've come to expect. People often comment about obsession, but this is only one of many things I discuss. The original commenter pointed a part of this video as proof of him singing live, but it is not and I suggested the alternative hypothesis. I have remained as objective as I can and refrain from insulting Vitas. If you must know, I truly enjoy Vitas as a musician, and listen to his studio music on almost a daily basis. What I take issue with is his integrity which amounts to nothing more than fraud. I don't think of him as a "talentless freak", which I've seen posted all too often in some of the Russian discussions. If anything, I think it's quite sad he's been living up to people's expectations. The microphone system, called sidechain gating, isn't as sophisticated as it sounds. I myself am not an expert in audio engineering so I will leave that to others to explain the key dynamics, but from what I can gather it involves sidechaining a microphone input on a compressor to another track (in this case containing the acapellas). Remixers sometimes use this to trigger multiple instruments by one drumbeat, while DJs and radio podcasters sometimes use the inverse system, called sidechain ducking to fade or mute music when they are talking. A few years ago on Gearslutz someone asked "Advice on lipsyncing and not getting caught?", to which someone suggested this very mechanism that Vitas uses. You also mention "it only detects the singer's voice, it does not get confused with the background noise... " this has occurred on several occasions, when Vitas is blatantly not singing and the playback is heard faintly. I don't doubt that some singers can sing consistently and very close to studio versions, but I've compared Vitas' "live" tracks to their respective studio versions. Right down to every microscopic detail, there is absolutely no difference, which is downright impossible to do. Any perceived differences (such as stronger breaths or louder vocals) can be explained by the fact that the vocals are often independently mixed from the backing track during live performances, as well as audio compression during the broadcast or recording.
