With our interest piqued, we decided we had to do a Vitus Kids Bike Review! So did they deliver on our expectations? Absolutely! With an impressive build at a reasonable price, there’s plenty for kids AND parents to love about Vitus.
In this kids bike review, we’ll cover the 20” and 24” Vitus Kids Bikes… and tell you 5 things you need to know before you click that buy button!
0:31 1. FUN & EASY TO RIDE
1:10 2. MULTI-TERRAIN TIRES
2:00 3. TRIGGER SHIFTERS
2:30 4. DRIVETRAIN & GEARING
3:14 5. BRAKING SYSTEMS (US vs US)
3:40 BOTTOM LINE
1. FUN & EASY TO RIDE
We’ve tested over 200 kids bikes and can easily tell when a bike is working with a child or against them. The Vitus Kids bikes are some of the best we’ve seen. With a semi-leaned in body position, kids are perfectly positioned for comfort, but also to lean in to get aggressive as the need arises. These bikes are also lightweight and nimble, making that ride pretty effortless… whether you’re cruising to your friend’s house, jumping curbs or ramps in the front yard, or tackling the trails. The Tektro V-brakes provide plenty of stopping power and are easy to engage. Every rider we put on a Vitus bike was in heaven and wanted to keep the bike!
2. MULTI-TERRAIN TIRES
The 20″ Vitus features a smooth Vee Speedster tire that is ideal for only paved surfaces. That smooth tread provides a smooth and fast ride, but not enough traction for dirt.
The 24″ comes with a multi-use Kenda Small Block 8 with a tread that allows riders to easily transition from paved to basic compact dirt trails. While most 24″ bikes have 1.5″ wide tires, the Vitus 24″ takes it a bit wider with 1.95″. While minor, the extra width does provide a bit more cushioning for the rocky parts of the trail.
For true trail riders, the upgraded Vitus 20+ and 24+ models are better options as they feature 2.6″ wide tires and hydraulic disc brakes.
3. TRIGGER SHIFTERS
Both the 20” and 24” Vitus kids bikes come standard with Shimano trigger shifters. We’ve found that trigger shifters tend to be more complicated to learn for beginning riders compared to grip shifters, but it certainly isn’t a deal breaker. By the time kids are riding a 24” bike, they are likely to have already mastered gears and can handle trigger shifters more easily; so the trigger shifters on the 20” tend to be more problematic, because this is when kids are typically introduced to gears.
4. DRIVETRAIN & GEARING
The Vitus 20″ comes with 7 speeds and a Shimano Altus drivetrain, while the 24″ comes with 8 speeds and a Shimano Acera drivetrain. Both systems are a significant step above Shimano’s baseline Tourney series and are fully capable for beginning to aggressive neighborhood riding.
The highest gain ratios of both the bikes, however, are significantly lower than comparable models. For example, the highest gain ratio on the 24” is 4.84, while on 24” bikes by woom and Prevelo, the highest gain ratio is over 6. While this won’t really be a problem for the average rider, for those riding on flatter terrain who need some higher gears to really pound out mileage or higher speeds, another brand may be a better option for you.
5. BRAKING SYSTEMS (US vs US)
All Vitus kids bikes are shipped from the UK and should have the brakes adjusted to meet U.S. standards. Of the three Vitus bikes we’ve purchased, 1 came adjusted to UK standards - which means the front brake is connected to the right hand instead of the left. Make sure to check this before your child’s first ride! And don’t worry, it’s pretty easy to swap if they forgot to do it for you.
So What’s the Bottom Line?
Well equipped and ready to roll, the Vitus Kids 20″ and 24″ bikes are light and nimble bikes that are a great choice for any neighborhood rider ready to tackle the world on two wheels. The Vitus’ Shimano trigger shifters however, do make the bikes less ideal for riders less experienced with gears.

Frog Bikes are excellent! They used to be hard to get consistently in the United States, but their supply here is getting pretty solid.

Nice accurate review, but you might as well pronounce it correctly next time. It's never Vitus is never pronounced with a long "i".
