In this video tutorial for Giant's Editor 9.0.3 and Farm Sim 22, I'm going to teach you all about resolution and the role that it plays in the map creation process. It's likely that you have, or at sometime will, come across issues that are directly related to file resolution and you didn't know how to deal with it. By the end of this video you will fully understand and those pesky problems will become a thing of the past.

LOL, Thanks! I have a weird sense of humor some days!

Yeah, most 16x maps and larger aren't concentrated on detail, they are meant for larger scale multi-player. Which is ironic because as you say, there is a serious performance hit with the larger maps. I can't imagine the lag on a server. I have a pretty hot computer and they slow way down even on single player.

For sure. I couldn't imagine putting the amount of detail into a 16km that I do with a 4km - the amount of time alone would be ridiculous. I'm sure there are guys that can pull it off much faster, I'm just not one of them! I do love playing larger maps though. One of these days I'll actually give it a shot.

This might depend on the map you are playing. Most people believe you need to double all file dimensions when making larger maps, and this is just not true. I think lots of people are making their maps needlessly large and slow without even realizing.

@@bauerbrown Perhaps. The couple 16x and one 32x maps I happened to look at were all pretty convoluted as far as file structure and organization. I didn't delve into the dimensions of the weight files and such, really, I am more interested in creating simple 2x maps at this point. I like playing 4x but I am not ready to try to create something like that. Honestly, I am more interested in just tweaking the maps I play on for my own needs. Lose a fence, flatten an area, maybe set up a custom pasture...I pretty much just play myself single player, so while it is cool to look at the big maps I really don't think I want to create a save on one. 4x is about right for me. Especially when the creator details it and creates lots of nooks and crannies and height elevation etc to make it feel bigger.

@@seanobrien7169 Agreed. How are your tweaks coming along? Having issues with anything?

@@bauerbrown Nothing in particular, I am sort of just following along with your videos. The biggest problem I had was trying to strip other people's maps, but you covered that in the start from scratch video. I mostly needed to understand the file structures and if I was missing anything in creating a blank map from the game map. I am interested in creating larger maps, I assume at this point it is just scaling up the resolution, but I am sure you are working towards that video real soon here so no hurry. I am just dabbling, trying to understand this enough that I can be comfortable with it all. I also dabble in Blender, mostly resin printing stuff, and also gimp and other graphics oriented stuff, so this is all just a natural extension. Again, I'm just a hobbyist, no aspirations to ever publish anything. But who knows, I am not against the idea either. 🙂

So i just tried to do this, and i scaled every single weight file in my data folder, but the editor threw an error for wrong format of the image. It said it needs to be 8bit single channel. Any idea how to fix this? Love the tutorials

How did you rescale them? It sounds like the method you used saved them as an RBG. The images need to be an 8 bit greyscale image. Every program is a bit different in the way you set RGB vs greyscale, and also how you change 8 vs 16 bit ... you'll need to Google that. I can check it out later if you're still having issues. I personally use Photoshop and I'm able to rescale every image in the folder at the same time by processing them as a batch, but not every program has that capability and it can be a pain doing them one by one. You could always download a blank map the same size you are working with, and copy them from that map - just be sure to verify the _weights are the same size.

@@bauerbrown i was using a website to scale them all. Ill keep digging on the internet to see if i can get it figured out.

i got it to work using gimp, just exported the scaled images as the right color in grey. Thanks for the help

Yes, but it's not currently in use. Thats the next project after the web site is done.
