Artist: L'Arte dell'Arco , Federico Guglielmo (solo violin & concertmaster ), Pier Luigi Fabretti (oboe)
With this new release, L’Arte dell’Arco complete their survey of the concertos and sonatas Opp. 1-12 which spread the fame of Antonio Vivaldi across Europe thanks to their publication by Etienne Roger in Amsterdam. These final two sets were published in 1729, 18 years after the L’estro armonico collection Op.2 had created a sensation with their unprecedented brilliance of solo writing, rhythmic vivacity and originality of disposition between solo and accompaniment.
Federico Guglielmo contributes a scholarly note to the booklet, in which study of the manuscripts have uncovered new contexts to these concertos. Although it is uncertain how much Vivaldi supervised their publication, and to what degree they are compilations of earlier work, the concertos bear the hallmarks of the fully mature composer. By this time in his full maturity, Vivaldi was highly receptive to the appeal of the new galant taste, enriched by his experience with opera, and sensitive to discussion with acclaimed composers such as Leonardo Vinci, Nicola Porpora and Leonardo Leo. Two of them were likely written for one Anna Maria, a student of particular virtuoso abilities at the Ospedale della Pieta where Vivaldi was the long-serving music master. The final concerto of Op.11 was originally conceived as an oboe concerto, and in that form is presented here.

Exaggerated. He's a great composer, but not the greatest. There are others that are in the pantheon. Vivaldi has his merit but is in the shadow of Bach and Mozart

Vivaldi lived in 1600s, even little earlier than Bach, while Mozart and Beethoven etc lived centuries after him. It pisses me a lot to find that he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Classical music especially in Europe is highly interconnected and learned from each other which ultimately makes Vivaldi one of the fathers!. He, at least, deserves to be in the top 3.
@ddehggial9932

"centuries" is a bit much. He was born in 1678, Bach in 1685, so technically they were contemporaries. Mozart was born in 1756 and Beethoven in 1770. That hundred years did make a difference, you're right, but it was only 100 years. What happened to him - and to Handel - is the Romanticists' contempt for anything that came before them, with Mozart barely making it in their eyes. The context in which the Romanticists operated and saw themselves as artists with a capital A, at odds with the society they lived in, was completely different from that of the Baroque artists, who did not see themselves as apart from the framework within which they lived and were mostly happy to function within that box. Doesn't make their accomplishments any lesser, of course. Sadly, we're still quite influenced by the Romanticist way of looking at art/artists, though I think things are getting slowly better.

@@ddehggial9932 The Romantics didn't have contempt for everything that came before them, just whatever things of the 18th century that seemed cold and shallow and unoriginal and unpoetic. Most of the composers admired Mozart and especially Beethoven, and they respected Haydn. Schubert, Mendelsohn, Schumann, Brahms admired Bach and Handel. Wagner liked Mozart and quartets of Haydn. Brahms especially admired and studied the old composers. Vivaldi's music fell out of fashion in the 1730s and after his death only a few concertos were published, and he didn't have enough of a following or students or an institution to promote his music as in the case of Palestrina and Bach and Handel. So he was little remembered by the second half of the 18th century. It wasn't until Bach's biographer Forkel called attention to the influence of Vivaldi's concertos on Bach that some scholars took an interest in Vivaldi. But not much of his music was available until the 1930s.
