Thanks for making this video. It was very informative and it's good to see a good and thorough review of this headset. I'm disappointed with how it is currently, but I'm planning to keep an eye on it to see if future updates fix the issues and make it a more viable option.
now that the quest pro is discontinued, HTC has the perfect opportunity to take their place. i was very skeptical, but optimistic and hopeful. i am not surprised by what was released. the specs are concerning, but doable, however, this is the very first post release review on the focus vision i have ever seen. and its what? 12 days AFTER launch? its definitely a red flag, but ill give it a couple of months to see how it goes...
@@meaty_yt at this point, its as if theyre trying to make a terrible headset. for $1000+ there are problems on it that just shouldnt be there. im sure if it was cheaper, like around $600, even for just a sale, i think the conversations around the headset would be a lot different. as of right now, on ebay, you can get the quest pro from anywhere between $500 and $800 in various amounts of use to even brand new. despite the fact that meta has discontinued it. though yes, even the quest pro has some issues. several of my friends use it,and has commented on how its possible for the controllers to overheat
@@MelloniacVT it's not discontinued yet, but it's been announced that it will be discontinued, I don't remember when, but it will be within the next few months, so if you want one, id suggest you get one sooner rather than later
i preordered the headset too and... i have never been so disappointed over a headset, i have tested it on standalone and... it can barly play vrchat and the batteries drain sooo fast
@@daytodaygogoer7857 I haven’t really noticed the battery drain standalone side since I really only played PCVR. But I did notice the pass through cameras drained them FAST compared to my Quest Pro..
That's so cool that the tongue tracks so much! I've used AR kit for vtuber uses, but I've never seen any models where it not only tracks the tongue sticking out, but the direction the tongue is moving!
Thank you for reviewing this. I've been looking into getting a new headset since I wanted eye/face tracking features (i'm on my third index at this point, I figured it couldn't hurt to get something new.) and was debating getting this.. and you've officially changed my mind on that. I've heard pretty bad things about HTC products/build quality/programs/build quality but.. Never actually had someone sit down and show the issues properly. Still kinda dont know what headset I'm gonna get now but at least I'm not gonna drop a grand on something I'll end up regretting now. So thank you.
Thank you for the very detailed video. As a fellow content creator I was considering getting this but the complete lack of information about it scared me. I’ll continue with my Quest Pro - Meta please make another headset with face tracking or keep supporting the quest pro
@@Kobalt2772 VRFlightSimGuy did got a preproduction and now production run Headset. There hasn't been much about the eyetracking functions yet sadly, only an older one that showed that it works for tracking the gaze.
The spazzing of face tracking took me out. I was actually laughing with you. It looked nutty. What in the demon possession was going on!?My question is...Why in the world they would stop selling peak product to release later some...no offense to Vive...CRAp xD
Great video. Been thinking alot about the pre order and pussied out. Been waiting for this review cause i was planning on making a review myself when i was thinking about buying the pre order. I have been using the HTC Vive Focus 3 now for 2,5 years and its basically the same as this just without the new features. Just wanted to say i never had any problem with the comfyness of that headsett. Fits perfectly and so nice i sleep with it on most days, but still its clear to me how the fit is not for the majority of people. Also never had a problem with the blurry/clearness of the lenses. Batteries where amazing... just the first few months when they where new. I have two batteries, one last about 30 min and the other lasts about 45 min and thats only after 2,5 years of use. Sad to see they stuck with the same shitty controllers i absolutely hate. Can't use space drag in VRC with theese controllers and the only thing they are good for is scratching your back honestly. The durability on the controllers are really the only great thing with them. Took me 2,5 years for both rings to snap off and wires inside the controller to stop working (keep in mind i did drop, throw, punch and smack these controllers into shit hard for 2,5 year before they broke. I treated them like they where a old nokia phone. Anyways great video review, i will reconsider buying the headset and try and convince myself to buy a quest😭😆
Today I chose to send mine back, before getting your video suggested. - Got the cable kit - I updated the headset multiple times - couldnt find a sharp point with it - ipd auto never matched, had to manuel set it - eye tracking / facetracing was as worse as u showed, even when just using it with vive own stuff or eye pointer in menus - passthru looked like 480p webcam with increased noise - I use glasses, can fit both with or without the middle piece, but not perfect seal got light bleed ...
I'm glad I ended up getting the XR elite. Similar issues for sure, but half the price and lighter for dancing. I hope there's a better wireless headset for dancing soon, the Quest Pro seemed like a very heavy option sadly
Same with the cable issue! I never got one ): But yea, all of the experiences with the headset, including my own that I returned monday week after, have been negative ): very sad. I was hoping something would finally be the "best" pcvr headset for face+eye tracking
I was so upset to find that this headset was a joke. I’ve been really wanting a replacement for my Pro Eye and try to avoid the Zuck in the process. So, seeing this headset I was super excited to see it had QPro features and Vive FT.. Then I got it…
@meaty_yt I think the saddest part is, it reaches beyond just users like yourself who are willing to drop time and money to make this work. In the process of making a cool upgrade and introducing it to the market, a new pcvr headset could have also been the replacement for valve's index, and HOPEFULLY encouraged them to do something else. But until the index is dead, I don't think we'll be seeing anything from valve ): Weird that htc decided to make it *kind* of standalone instead of investing that money in better lenses too.
Afaik it doesn't even have the Quest Pro's version of the XR2 Gen 1... HTC just keeps missing... *chuckles in Q Pro that i found for $220* (Also your bali is dull) Lower bandwidth lowers latency. Try Steam Link on the Quest Pro, on 6e, set to 80-130 mbps, with the Foveated encoding set to 800ish pixels. I've gotten sub 12 ms timing, which is good enough for Seat Baber. Virtual Desktop sacrifices a tiny smidge of latency for better visuals
Seems like ya had all the same type of issues I did, so disappointed I had high hopes they were going to do good this time. Just time to go back to the quest with the vive face tracker and to finally finish building the eye trakers.
When this news came out, i think many people rushed to shops to get Quest Pro. Stocks are reduced already and i see some shops are sold-out. I use Quest Pro, and it worked just straight out of the box. Just some eye calibration and it works. Also controllers of Quest Pro is better because it tracks everywhere, especially if you don't have lighthouse system. The controllers of Focus Vision are just like Quest 2, it cannot track everywhere. Also for standalone it uses older gen chip, so it's less future proof for playing games standalone. And the lenses? I love wide FOV of Quest 3. I have less problems with Quest Pro FOV. Sweet spot is good. I know there will some face tracking modules made for Quest 3. I saw already some company pictures. In short, this headset is not much better than Quest Pro, to be honest. I managed to make Quest Pro comfy with 3rd party paddings. I know some stuff will fixed later, but you cannot fix some hardware issues like fresnel lenses and swappable battery design is weird.
That’s my bad, I really don’t use many human or even any anime styled avatars. The ones I do have are quite outdated in the face tracking and don’t show all the new shapes.
So I kinda mentioned it in the video but I did preorder the headset and it was supposed to come with the Vive wired streaming kit. The kit was delayed about a month… and nowhere on the listing for Amazon or Vive said it would be separate. I was going to attempt using just a USB-C cable but from other people trying that, they said that it can cause the USB ports on your pc or the headset to shutdown &/or overheat. So I decided not to risk it.
I have my doubts Vive will ever fix this headset, but the Vive Pro Eye was very broken on release but it was fixed very quickly but I think that was only because of Valve and Tobi pressure to fix it asap.
I was hoping the focus vision would be good as it seemed promising to me too. Luckily I didn't pre order it as I heard it's kinda bad. I'm prob just gonna wait for valve to do smthn hopefully soon.
they pushed out some fixes for face tracking on their discord. I dont use ft but noticed the chatter about it. hoping they make some big fixes before my return window is up.
The eye-tracking cannot work with pancake lenses? This is my first time hearing about that. How so? I have an XRE and assumed the eye-tracking would be the same as other Vive headsets.
So there are different styles of eye tracking when looking at the Vive and Quest headsets. The Pro Eye has a whole different style that can only be used with Fresnel lenses due to the nature of the build. This style lets the actual camera be located behind the lens entirely. This allows eye dilation and insane accuracy. The Quest Pro, XRE, and Focus Series use camera based which relies on cameras located at the corners of your eyes. This style is more suited for pancake lenses as pancake is too thin / packed to fit cameras behind them. These cameras are accurate but they rely on algorithms to assume your eye movement. Since they are located in the corners, you also cannot (generally) get eye dilation either.
I have been using a quest pro for about 6 months and I haven't had any issues with it not working or not doing the face tracking. Having to use a vive or tundra tracker to have it work with FBT kind of sucks but I guess we just have to wait until a new base station headset comes out that supports all face and eye tracking stuff.
You could also look into Vive’s Ultimate Trackers which don’t require base stations as well. Or Pico’s all in one trackers, those can work standalone (I believe) with the quest headsets. For my setup I just use the Space Calibratior for all my trackers and index controllers. Works perfect as long as you have an extra tracker for your headset itself.
@@Realityexe you need a tracker to track the headset. Its required because the pro uses a different tracking tech then the vive trackers. Then you need software to put the 2 different spaces together so they are in the same "play space" and know where each other are.
@AlexFox2040 You don't need a tracker on your headset. You can just calibrate once with your controllers. You only need the fourth tracker on your headset if you don't want to manually calibrate. I use this setup every time I'm in vr
I hope they fix the tracking because I would like to buy this headset in the middle of the next year and I really don't know what else to buy right now because there is literally no new alternative that lets me ditch wireless. And no I hate playing wireless, I have a very nice gaming router but still if a certain someone at my house downloads stuff with his Steamdeck or streams his PS5 screen to his Steamdeck it breaks down my stream and it's never ever really good quality on wireless
I'm with this on this with my network class teacher. No single wireless connection can compare to a hard wired one and I just want that raw uncompressed output from my graphics card also save the performance from the constant compression process on my graphics card when playing wireless
Definitely recommend upgrading, you definitely don’t have to go overkill like my build but definitely something that supports over 5gb speeds wirelessly. Also helps if the headset is the only thing on the router that’s wirelessly connected.
@@meaty_yt Unfortunately I changed over to a digital gigabit connection and my landline was changed to digital too and my ISP has a proprietary VIOP connection port built in to the Router for the telephone. I'm looking in to daisy chaining 2 router together but from what the forum says it might stop the phone from working.. :S I would just change ISP but I'm not the bill payer.
I'm constantly being dissapointed maaaaaan.. bought Focus 3 to replace my Vive Pro and had high hopes for the "stand alone" trackers but i just got mad instead, trackers are dg sht in smaller places and the headset is uncomfortable as hell (went back to vive pro that i modified with glass lenses years ago and its still a better working that the most of new ones). Ngl i was kinda hopieng for new Focus Vision to be a better replacement for Focus 3.. after seeing your reviev now i know not to but it. I guess we will be waiting for ne VALVE once its released.
@@Kobalt2772 this was before & after, I believe Test 1 was pre update and Test 2 & 3 were after. I also talked to a friend today about the update that launched today / last night and it only patched a few things with the lip tracking..
@meaty_yt so the eye jittering was not fixed yet? Did the lip tracking improve? I'm kinda stuck on the fence here. I can cancel my pre-order but honestly I'm not too sure where I can go for an eye tracking headset and I'm not super interested in the quest pro as I had it and didn't like it all too much and had a lot of issues with setting up eye tracking and mouth tracking but it seems consistent for those who use it and beyond the vive eye pro it seems like the only other option. I think the vive eye pro came out while Valve and the other company were still doing HTCs homework. The question in the end is can I trust HTC to actually fix this headset to make its eye tracking quality match/exceed its competitors and previous models
I bought the whole set too. And I agree with everything. Its a Horrible Vr Gear, especially for that price. Battery Hotswapping in wifi mode isnt working for me. Removing the battery is setting the glasses into standby mode, killing the connection to wifi and vrc. Its allready going back in return for my money. I recommend valve index over this thing every time.
@@GahoneArt same, I thought it was just me when I swapped my batteries. But it fully cuts off all connections for a short time though the headset stays on..
But if you are on a PC and are using ethernet lots of them can create a WIFI hotspot on the computer itself. You should have recorded how much bandwidth is was using streaming at over 1gbit would mean its uncompressed most likely should only really be 100mbit at most
Also if it makes you feel better i pre ordered my fovud vision on the 15th and still 0 updated and mines have been layed and someone pre ordered there 2 days after on Amazon and got it in like around 2 dayd and im like bruh but i guess they did give people that were delayed a 25 dollar giftcard to vive which i feel is nice
Unfortunate but not surprised but absolutely disappointing that they released it in this state, they seem to not even care or listen to the consumers especially with each headset being seemingly worse than the last from what's been shared with me. (had a quest 2, vive pro, index and now a cosmos)
i'm actually a hater of htc Like, they haven't made anything good since the original vive in my opinion. And they've just constantly screwed over customers. I was just in a lobby with someone who had the cosmos, they moved their arms and literally lost tracking it's UNREAL. And then the software support for older standalone headsets is pretty bad, (just like pico's) and it feels like every single release they're missing their target customer by a mile. I think that if you can return you should definitely return. It's just not worth the hassle and chances are you can get it cheaper for later. I just don't know why somoene would deal with this on a thousand dollar headset 😭😭😭😭

XR.E owner w/ full face tracker. Similar issue here on occasion and it's discouraged me from getting on VRC. I looked up the Pro Eye hardware and compared it to the XR.E tracker; they both appear to be the same hardware with the same abilities (120hz tracking cameras and able to see about 110°) I think where something might be different is the software the Pro Eye used. Vive seemed to have made a big deal about the Pro Eye's tracking being handled by Tobii. So I wonder if they're doing their on brew of it and it sucks as a result?

@meaty_yt Behind the lenses?! Well that explains a LOT Now I at least don't feel so dejected and salty about what I feel like is lacklustre performance from my XR.E's tracker setup. Makes me want to get a Pro Eye now but even as old as they are, 500usd for me is still a tough one to justify. I lucked out and got my XR.E lightly used for 340 on eBay. I hope HTC (or someone) sorts this out, the Pro Eye's tracking looks smooth and believable/life-like; you're right in that the smoother the tracking the more genuine the experience is.
By your explanation it sounds worse than the bigscreen beyond interms of the sweet spot and FOV. Except it weights 5x as much. If you are really playing for 13 hours a light headset should be a priority
I find it so funny that Vive just cannot comprehend the concept of reusing the hardware from their own old products, keeps reinventing stuff and messing it up completely..
@@dantesvrinferno9843 I did and at first they didn’t even take my claims that it was broken in their support. Then everyone started telling them the same thing and now they suddenly want to fix it. I had already returned my headset this week but I do have a few friends that still have it and waiting on the update, I may post an update using them as the test subjects.
Oof, still a really bad built-in mic. Based on what your avatar is doing while squinting, it appears that the eye tracking in this HMD isn't capable of proper detection of eyelid position. It was only built for 'blinking' or eyes closed, so it just looks like bad tracking when it can't see your eye while squinting (or I guess opening your eyes wide). Hopefully there are software updates or something!
2:32 Build quality is better with hard wired rechargable batteries??? Bruh Ikea rechargable or enloop rechargeable AA batteries are way more convenient for your long hours you just take off the cover and take the two batteries and plop two charged batteries to last you the whole rest of your 10hr session... Like if you are quick it's a 1 minute endeavor if you have the charged batteries in reach😂😂😂
I wonder if the mouth tracker (i.e. Face tracker with USB-C male head) can be used stand alone?(like the old vive face tracker) For example, hooking it directly onto the PC with USB-C extension cable, will the mouth tracking still work? Can you pls try this approach? Thanks. I want to buy this newer face tracker for a headset mod becoz the old Vive face trackers were not in production anymore.
I’m not too sure, I know some individuals in the VRCFT server have attempted this but they haven’t had any luck. Apparently it’s something to do with proprietary drivers?
This video could frankly have ended at the 6 minute mark. Ypu spend the first couple of minutes talking about how much you spent and how pretty outside of the headset is before just blasting it with how uncomfortable it is overall and mentuoning that the screens (predictably) were also blurry and piss. Thats all anyone really needs to know. If you had talked about the shitty microphone a bit quicker as well you would have had the best short review on the product.
