Wow! John Ndirangu that's what it often looks like every time we have one of those National trials.... usually there are 4-5 athletes who are overqualified, posting fast times, in the season immediately preceding a championship.

What was disappointing about this race, especially for those of us watching on TV, was the failure by the commentators to notice that Vivian Cheruiyot had broken the Olympics record. Brilliant performance by Vivian and Obiri.

Vivian Cheruiyot first competed at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000. It took her 16 years to finally win that Olympic gold medal.

One of the all time greatest distance runs on the track. They are all heroes. Cheruiyot, Obiri, Ayana, Cherono, Teferi … Almaz Ayana gave it all her heart and went out courageously, Vivian Cheruiyot stuck to her game plan, as the commentators called it so nicely, and kept her hopes and goal; and so did Hellen Obiri. That spirit was missing in Genzebe Dibaba 2015 in Beijing in the 5000 against Ayana. All these races were given a special attraction by Ayana‘s courageous spirit, and the others finding their ways with it. In 2015 it was Teferi‘s Silver Moment, 2016 in Rio Vivian crushed it and showed her class. I love these classic races 👍

Oh how I wish in Kenya we could be recognizing our athletes, giving them standing ovations, immortalising them in museums etc rather than taxing their hard earned money, leaving them to rot with age and dying poor, forgetting them almost immediately after competitions then giving platforms to our greedy politicians all ears and years who give us rhetorics and mumble bunch of nonsense.Its time we WAKE up!!!
