Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 - April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer whose work was discovered and recognized after her death. She worked for about 40 years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, while pursuing photography. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.
During her lifetime, Maier's photographs were unknown and unpublished; many of her negatives were never developed. A Chicago collector, John Maloof, acquired some of Maier's photos in 2007, while two other Chicago-based collectors, Ron Slattery and Randy Prow, also found some of Maier's prints and negatives in her boxes and suitcases around the same time. Maier's photographs were first published on the Internet in July 2008, by Slattery, but the work received little response. In October 2009, Maloof linked his blog to a selection of Maier's photographs on the image-sharing website Flickr, and the results went viral, with thousands of people expressing interest. Maier's work subsequently attracted critical acclaim, and since then, Maier's photographs have been exhibited around the world.
Her life and work have been the subject of books and documentary films, including the film Finding Vivian Maier (2013), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 87th Academy Awards.

Beautiful, and the choice of music. A lot of people say she was sad but looking at these images what strikes me is her non discriminating love for the world and people in all their different manifestations.

Another stunning collection of work by and incredible photographer. This is our history, the history of humanity, a history that gave birth to us all…one way or another. A window onto our past, Captured for eternity. Can you add a credit for the music? It works beautifully…well done.

Incredible work, and knowing that she shot film and was likely sparing in the number of photos she took, unlike those of us shooting digitally today knowing that we can quickly edit and cull. Thank you for sharing this.

She took more than 150,000 photos in her lifetime. Most only discovered after her death

Great video. I can hardly believe how many of her photos are perfect, so moving, emotional, so creative, wonderful lighting and composition, and she was so prolific. How does she find so many great subjects? There are many documentaries on photographers that are almost all commentary and show a few photos. This is much better.

I am not sure why but it seems important that she left us with a good amount of selfies, I suppose a lot of it has to do with the fact there isn't much info about her. Thanks for posting this.

Vivian Maier was haunted by her inner demons, you can see it it everyone of her photos. Or, maybe I am haunted by mine and that is all I see in her work. I wish we new more about her. Her photos come to me as sheer brilliance, a master of the craft. In each of her photos we cant help but to see ourselves. Stunning work!

The earlier pictures by her using the twin lens reflex have an intimacy with the subject that seems to have been lost once she began using 35mm. There is a definite change in the type of subject and her approach which I think has to do with the change of view from waist level to eye level. Once the camera is up to your eye its immediately obvious to the subject that you are taking their photo and you lose something in the process.

I agree. The 35mm photos have a much different vibe.

If Maier lived today, she would be prosecuted for taking photos in public, of public premises, and photographed individuals would probably demand payment. Good thing she lived when she did, these days she would have virtual, computer-like humans for subjects.

Why do you say that. Street photography is thriving still, both on film and digital. Research modern geniuses of the genre like Alan Schaller

Vivian Maier, never existed, is the creation of Joan Fontcuberta, a great Spanish photographer, teacher and philosopher. It was an experiment for an investigation and his documentary. The photos were taken by him. He said that one day looking through the boxes full of old photos of him, he came up with that idea. Was a social photography experiment.
