Vivian Vance as Ethel Mertz in I Love Lucy 

Vivian was a comic master and the series would never have been the same without her. I believe I've read elsewhere that while she was happy about her years with Lucille Ball (a lifetime friend) she was somewhat resentful that her parts required her to be older and frumpier than she actually was. If you look closely you can see a very attractive lady hidden underneath those 1950's clothes.

I read once that Vivian`s life was not so good because of her mother. But she could keep on moving in her way. I describe Vivian in three words: BEAUTY, POWER and JOY**** Love to Viv always !!!

Vivian was under-played in I love Lucy, because, at 1st, Lucy didn't want her as the role of Ethel, maybe a bit of jealousy, who knows, but soon realized what a talent she was & they became such close friends, on & off camera. I agree, Vivian didn't get the recognition that she deserved on the show, but she still shined & always stood out to me, I mean Lucille Ball was comedy royalty & if you can stand tall with someone like that, you have great talent in your own right! RIP lovely ladies!

Very nice. It's just a reminder that we all love Lucy and Vivian too! Vivian had some great lines, and one of my favorites was when they were in Florida, and Lucy and Ethel were trying to catch a bigger fish than the boys. So, they bought this large sword fish, and Lucy was trying to put it somewhere, and Ethel said something like "You're not going to be able to hide Tilly the tuna" lol Very nice video!

wouldn't you?? LOL I LOVED Vivian...she was SUCH a Betty! I loved beautiful women with humor...like Mother and I clung to anything that remotely reminded me of her. She passed when I was 3, so I clung to lasting images of ANY woman that reminded me of her. Dad's wife wasn't even in the area code as "Mother". literally.. she was from HACKENSACK!

Of course 1:11 is my all-time FAVE! I wanted to JUMP on Fred's head because if I could EVER achieve half that=win. I did, but missed it. I was looking in too many broken mirrors by then. Lucy was a beauty, but hers was not my goal. I wanted that joyful Vaudeville sass. As it turns out, it runs in the family. Elmer Radd's Cotton Club Orchestra had my folks playing the circus beat and where else?, I can't wait to find out. HONOR your legacies, ppl. That was the greatest idea for the net.

Vivian Vance was cheated in the "I Love Lucy" series! She was just as funny, if not more funny, that Lucille, but her contract called for her downplay her comedic side in favor of Lucy getting more laughs. She also had to keep her weight artificially up so as to appear older than Lucy when in fact, she was younger! William Frawley was another story, Vivian hated working with him!

Frankly I think Richard Christy does a better Ethel Mertz than Vivian Vance, but she was pretty good too.
