Clip of Vivienne Westood's appearance on Wogan with Sue Lawley on BBC1 in 1988 with fellow guests Russell Harty and Janet Street-Porter.
The audience respond to Vivienne's "Time Machine" collection by laughing at the models in the studio.
This clip which features commentary from Colin McDowell and Peter York is taken from "Fashion versus the BBC" which was shown on BBC4 in January 2009 as part of its "Timeshift" series.
Dame Vivienne Westwood passed away peacefully in London on 29 December 2022.

Why invite her on the show to present her work only to laugh at and mock her and her artwork. As an artist that is an absolute nightmare, the most humiliating and frightening thing to even think about. 30 years later and Westwood is the only person on that stage remembered. She's an icon and an artistic genius.

@@tami8458 good point both of you. It’s sad that someone’s invited with one context and it becomes a comedy piece. I remember when this happened, I was only little. Vivienne Westwood is a fashion icon and fashion historian, I hated the behaviour at the time - it feels like an attack on the working classes - Vivienne's links with the punk movement and coming from a working class family in Derbyshire. Russell Harty is just being deliberately obtuse - clearly the mini crini isn't something designed for the purpose of doing your weekly shop, what a ridiculous thing to say. I would wear that, I love the classic tailoring and grecian inputs with the capes and overcoats. His slack jawed expression just annoys me, he looks like some weird fish that smokes 40 a day.

You have to remember this is the BBC who are so behind in anything creative and new. Thank goodness for Channel 4 they turned things on there head.

You have to remember that this is an audience with free tickets who expect to be entertained, they don't know who the guests are and probably think its all a joke

Considering how ridiculous some of the models look, you can't blame them.

I thought it was a joke at first. I had to check the calendar to see if it was April Fools Day! And people pay good money to wear that crap? The man’s tailored suit was the only good bit.

@@lockleaze Just because a fashion style is not what you personally like does not mean it is bad. Different people will wear different things, tailored to what they love.

Who's that old queen with the beard doing the interview? Westwood saying she's "never met this response before" just goes to show how she was a bit out of touch.

Sadly what happens when you take Art to the masses, they poke fun at what they don't understand, which is a lot and it's getting worse.

I'd have laughed if I was there as well. Once an audience gets in a "laughy" mood it's hard to get out of it. I feel a bit sorry for Vivienne, but it was a daft idea to trot out her bizarre designs on a normal talkshow.

Yes. Her earlier punk designs were great but this was scraping the barrel. The self proclaimed ‘avant garde’ are always so gullible.

She proved them all wrong, Comfortable, Safe, middle of the road fools laughing at themselves if only they knew, Vivienne took it all in her stride, if she cared she never showed it ...... Patronising Sue Lawley in her M&S day wear ..... shameful really.

Terribly patronising but prime tv works in your favour people laugh but that’s their right it’s like art it brings out all sorts of emotions laughter ,disgust amazement, yes small minded people will laugh but what else can you expect on a light entertainment show it didn’t effect Vivian’s career it just enhanced it ..

The clothes and attitude behind the clothes is too 'original' and the British have always had problems with anyone or anything that seems outside the tribe. Most of these clothes you now see people wearing; again Viv was, like most original artists, in front of the times.

Yeah it’s funny how times have changed we all laughed our ass off at these ridiculous clothes for a clown but now everyone has to applaud this eccentric woman who like most artists is one step away from mental illness! I mean she would stick a dog turd to a hat to make an impact or tie a dead baby to cloak

I do not understand this visceral, seething hatred that some people have for imagination and design. This is particularly the case in Britain, and PARTICULARLY in the boomer generation. Anything that attempts to stand out in any way... they can't bear it. Glad I don't see the world through their sad grey eyes.

Sue Lawley sat there looking like a post menopausal third rate Princess Di knockoff playing to the peanut gallery. Those clothes have been far more influential than the mediocrity offered by Lawley and Harty.

I have been wearing Vivienne's clothing since the 1970's she is one of the most influential designers ever in history...Sue Lawley, Russel Harty are disposable, a million would be media students could do a better job tomorrow...She encouraged them to laugh to gain power over the audience...it's a cheap trick, narrow minded presenting and I have seen photographs of Mizz Lawley wearing Westwood..makes you laugh really..
