Jane Elgey remembers the experiences of her family in the Japanese Prison Camp and Margie Caldicott recalls her mother describing a hymn, called the 'Captives' Hymn', written by an English Presbyterian missionary called Margaret Dryburgh, for the camp's 'women's vocal orchestra'.
Margaret Dryburgh was an English Presbyterian missionary. She became Principal of the Kuo Chuan Girls’ School in Singapore and is remembered for her faith, strength of character, and her astonishing memory for classical musical scores. She died in 1945 in the Japanese Prison Camp at Lakat, Sumatra and her experiences are remembered in the television series ‘Tenko’ and the feature film ‘Paradise Road’.
The hymn is sung by the Chichester Women's Vocal Orchestra.
