Part 19: • TK Kirkland on Being o...
Part 1: • TK Kirkland on Kevin S...
--------
In this clip, DJ Vlad and TK Kirkland talk about a past VladTV interview with Faizon Love in which he declared that Jay-Z was fabricating stories about his days as a drug lord and Jay-Z responded to the interview in a rap. To that DJ Vlad attempts to make financial sense of a claim made by Jay-Z that he once lost 92 bricks (of cocaine) and he came to the conclusion that the drugs were valued at about $1.6 million and that he only made a 6% profit margin per brick. To that, they discuss the risks involved with selling 92 bricks, such as prison and getting killed. From there, TK Kirkland talks about why a life in the drug game simply isn't worth it.

I had a similar talk with my 13 year old daughter yesterday. I explained as a teenager why I did not sell drugs like the rest of the kids in my neighborhood. I told her it was not worth my life, some other gang shooting me for selling to their customers, or getting locked up. Standing outside in 15 degree cold weather or the summer heat waiting on a crackhead. Nope, I went to school were the girls where and my friends. At the age of 17 I joined the Army and as soon as I was out of school I was out of St. Louis.

Any costs such as travel expenses, security etc, if at all, are deducted to arrive at net profit. Net profit divided by top line revenue is your net profit margin.

When you're the distributor, the profit from one brick alone is not much at all, $1,000. But, the distributor is getting rid of 500-1000+ bricks in a short period of time. You're not breaking these bricks down and bagging them up. You're getting rid of them as is and youre only making like 5-7 big drops. It's the street level dudes that do all the work. They make more money but it's slower and a higher risk cause you're on the street 24/7 with the stick up kids and 5-0. It's slower because you're always in debt to the plug unless you're smart and save up.

I disagree. It's not as simple as a 6% profit margin. The percentage sucks but the profits compound because the prices drops with weight. Also time value must be applied. How long did it take to move the 90 bricks on average? If it was a few hours or one transaction that would equate that 6% to 90k per hour or 45k for 2 hours etc. The time value of the 6% and the total amount important. Rapper don't get 6 points or 6% per album most of the time. Don't let the small percentage make you overlook the true value of the exchange .

Yeah you know nothing of selling drugs. A brick, in that era, for him and just someone else? He'd get rid of it in a week, maybe....Freeway goes in about it in several interviews, he was at most making 200-300k in one day, but that was with his crew of 40 dudes, himself included. Jay and some unkown were not getting rid of a brick anytime soon. Especially given the location. Let along the fact that he never had 92 bricks, no one would front you 92 bricks, let alone let you buy that many. Cartel members and movers of cartels, aren't letting you walk away with 92 bricks even if you have 1.6 million, which Jay obviously didn't have. Lets say he did, somehow, the connect liked his cadence and just in his overall person, and loaned* him 92 bricks...do you know the hell that would come down on that entire block if he actually did lose it? The cartel has killed for less. So first you want me to believe that someone Jay and some random got fronted 92 bricks, then that he lost it? C'mon son, be smarter, he's a poet selling fantasies.

The dope game is not legit business. A mfer ain't thinking about the profit margin. A mfer thinking about the TOTAL PROFIT. Him saying $1,000 off each brick was a NO LESS THAN figure. If I'm paying 18K, the dudes buying singles gonna pay 21-22K, 5 of em 20K, 10 and up then I'm only making that $1,000 off each. Because the more you buy, the faster I sell out, the sooner I get more. So why not make 1K 80x in 10 days and then repeat??? That's a quarter million dollar month. And IDGAF what % of the total I'm profiting. Redman use to rap about jersey being “brick city” alot of those guys from the early 90s called there heroin packs bricks. Jay also from that era, the verse always made since to me as in he lost “92 packs” . Thats why it was never questioned at the time of. Why would it be a thing now, 20 something years later. This a whole diff era, everything ppl basing they knowledge of is off other rap songs when ppl rapped about bricks n trap music. For instance out here in the D, traps n the late 90s early 2000s, traps was called “ spots” n simply “ crack houses” u sat n the spot by urself u was holding down the fort” trap music changed the whole lango of drug dealing, forgetting most of that music was southern based and alot of the terms was from Atlanta, and Texas n shit. East Coast, mid west was saying they own shit. the hip hop world just got lost n the sauce n new generation mfs getting all they slang from the South and other outside cities.

Here's what they're not taking into consideration. if you sell 92 bricks wholesale and get $92,000 profit. Then you go re-up with the rest. you do it again the next week, then the week after. even if you only do it twice per month. that's almost $200,000 per month. Which is about $2.5 million a year. They're not drug dealers, so I don't hold it against them.

That math only work if they're frontin you the work otherwise you can't afford that or move it fast enough which is why they were breakin it down and cookin it up.

@@TheKingt731 Based on the story I heard. He was making $1,000 a brick selling them wholesale. He lost 92 bricks then had to replace that money by breaking some down and rocking them up. I was addressing the 6% profit margin Vlad and TK was saying wasn't worth it and explaining how it could make more sense. I assume the 92 we're fronted because he had to get the money back quick. I don't know the whole situation tho. The NYC crack era in the 80's and 90's you could move 100 bricks a week easy if you knew the right people. There were cats moving way more than that.

@@alstoncampbell1245 gotcha I was just looking at the money as a whole it really wasn't worth it and a lot of shit gotta bounce in your favor and the way it sounds is that (if it did happen) a lot of shit went wrong. Don't miss that.

@@TheKingt731 Jay Z is an outlier. Most people don't get lucky enough to make it out unscarred. It's not worth it at all. No matter how much money you make. When we were young and dumb we had learn that the hard way though.

The reason Hov only took such a low cut was because he owed back more. He lost some money but was still fronted more in order to cover the loss, taking less profit. It happens daily.

No one’s getting $1000 “a brick” but the mules…. and that’s a low paid mule. Most ppl transport by the load and for the most part it’s just like truck driving, the distance and risk determines how much you’re paid. The reality of situations that no one knows what Jay Z was doing, and real guys surrounding him never spoke ill of him so that says a little something
