Vlad managed to reclaim his throne for the 3rd time, just before dying a few months later. Even his death is steeped more in legend than truth, but the stories do not end there! His legend was already beginning to spread across Europe. And we all know what happens when a particular Irish author gets a hold of the legend.

People who apply modern moral judgement tend to forget that people in the past frequently viewed conquering armies of a different faith (in our case: the Ottomans) as basically an army of demons, sent by Satan himself. Over-the-top cruelty against them wasn't seen as a bug, but a feature. For example, Eugen of Savoy also often slaughtered more Ottomans than strategically necessary in his battles, but that didn't and doesn't hurt his reputation in Austria in the slightest. Viewing such things as dehumanizing/racist is a rather new phenomenon. For comparison, if the Doomslayer was real, would you care how he rips the demons apart? Certainly not.

@johnconstantine7442 2 года назад
You must take into account that history as we know it (especially if you go backwards in time, where evidence gets thinner) is "polished" to suit something. It is given a narrative, good or bad. Also there is a saying "History is made by the victors". A recent example is in Russia today. We know Stalin as a bad guy, but Putin nowadays tries to ressurrect his image of a good leader for russian people. And it is working, more and more russians start to believe that. I think it is over 50% know, if not in the 70%. He associated Stalin with defending USSR against the nazis, the heroic push back and the defeat of nazis in 45 (they have a day when they celebrate that). Which is true to a certain extent. But Stalin also purged many people, used the gulag system, had famines where lots of people died, and weakened the soviet army to such degree that it made it easier for nazis to push so far into soviet territory. But Putin pushes for the good leader narative, saviour of USSR, while at the same time not mentioning the other aspects. So here's an example of making history and how it is shaped. ps: i am romanian btw. and yes Vlad the Impaler is a hero in our history. same as his cousin Stephen (the Great) from Moldavia, mentioned in this series. but i knew in time both of them were idealised because they defended the land. as you see a country, any country has to have its heroes, even polshed or made up ones. and everyone wants to see themselves, their country, their current or historic leaders as the good guys.

The truth will always be more complicated than any of us realize. We tend to either uphold or disregard history based on our own biases and personal thoughts, but things are usually much more complex. A figure can be a hero to some, a villain to others, a footnote to a world, or everything to a nation. And the crazy thing is, that figure can be all those things together. I think that's the cool thing about history, that there can be many sides to a single story and that there is truth to any of them.

Bran Castle (Dracula’s castle) in Romania is an odd experience. Outside, people are hawking cheap Dracula merchandise. I am Romanian and I used to be fascinated by Vlad Țepeș (Impaler-in Ro) as a kid. He was by far my favourite historical figure. I even remember dreaming him once (he was a guest at our table and I asked him what his favourite food was and he replied it was "lichie cu ceapa" =onion pie. I absolutely loved his company) Looking back, I guess I was a pretty weird kid. Or maybe it was that textbooks glossed over some of the gore, presenting him indeed more as a just ruler than a bloody tyrant. I've grown much more merciful and sensitive since then, but I still acknowledge that he was indeed a formidable man and his night attack was a genius move.

Slight adjustments: 1. Wallachia and Moldavia united in 1859 during a vote in which they bamboozled the great powers and choose the same ruler. 2. In 1878 we won our full independence from the Ottomans and later we became a Kingdom 3. Most people still like Vlad the Imapler as a historical hero and ruler. Great work guys =)))

Since my country finally got some attention let's throw some more historical fun facts out there. Feel free to add your own. I'ma put my own favorite: The Unification of Wallachia and Moldavia is called "The Little Union". After the Europe-wide fun in 1848, the Powers weren't exactly pro unified Romania so Wallachia and Moldavia were made to have separate elections. Their little problem was that they never told us we had to elect DIFFERENT rulers. (insert curb your enthusiasm theme) And that peeps is how we ended up with Alexandru Ioan Cuza being elected twice(January 5th in Wallachia and 24th in Moldavia) and with the Romanian United Principalities.

This part 7:16 Is wrong, Moldova and Wallachia become a single country in the year 1859 , but yes after a Russian-Turkey war (those were many in the 19th century) and a convention and treaty that took place in Paris, events that lead to the double alection of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. In the year 1878 Romania won their independence.

Lotta damage, probably. You need to remember romania has always been between empires, so his fight was inherently doomed with the tiny amount of power we had. Bout the only thing to do was hold on via guerilla tactics on our own land.

I was in the Military Museum in Bucharest just a few weeks ago, and a class of young little school kids were being told about Vlad Tepes from a guide, along with their teacher. It interested me that Vlad III is called and written as ''Vlad the Impaler'' in the museum, and the little kids were being told about him...They were cute kids and the teacher was so lovely with them. I smiled at the guide as I walked past, listening...I do think that in Romania he is hailed as a hero...even so....What a truly fascinating person from history.

7:15. Is there any chance you would do a series on the Bulgarian April Uprising and the Berlin Conference that happened after the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish war? Or at least a one-shot about the defense of Shipka pass of which the image at 7:15 is based on? Long time viewer, would really appreciate it if you would cover that period. Thanks for all of the great work!
