Vlieland is the second inhabited Dutch Wadden Island, counting from the west. It lies in the province of Friesland but belonged to the province of North Holland until 1942. The municipality of the same name includes both the island and part of the Wadden Sea. To the south-west of Vlieland lies the island of Texel and to the northeast lies the island of Terschelling. Of the five Dutch Wadden Sea islands, Vlieland has the highest dune top: 45 metres high.
The municipality of Vlieland has 1,193 inhabitants (1 January 2021, source: CBS). The municipality contains only one village, which was unofficially called 'Oost-Vlieland' until 2009, but was then officially named Vlieland.[2][3] The name 'Oost-Vlieland' served to distinguish the island of Vlieland from the former village of West-Vlieland, which was abolished in 1736 after almost the entire village had been flooded by the sea. Vlieland has approximately 1,155 inhabitants (2020). With 32 inhabitants per km², Vlieland is the second least densely populated municipality in the Netherlands after Schiermonnikoog; by far the most inhabitants live in the village centre.
