Vlog 135 - Tasks and time 

Teaching is time-oriented and research is task-oriented. 12:47 strategies 13:28 list all the tasks and make them bite size 14:28 task: sort order from easy to difficult; 15:35 time: how long it takes accurately 16:50 find 30min, 60min slots in timetable 18:15 give all to work efficiently in these time slots

I started to watch this vlog today. I am not (at least not yet) PhD candidate, but what you are sharing fascinating and has implications and inspiring life lessons. Than you so much!

That sounds great, but the problem is that very often people underestimate the time needed for each task. So there is the risk that this will not work, because: a) in reality we need some more time for each task (very often even the most "pessimistic" time estimations are wrong, b) the task presents some difficulties we were not able to anticipate, wich happens quite often in research work. Also, the most easy tasks are not always the first ones to be done. So planning is important, and using the time effectively is crucial, but those plans will not always be realistic.

Thank you again Tara: always amazing! For anyone who gets motivation out of doing "pretty" notes (that's me!), you might want to look into bullet journaling which might give you some inspiration on ways to you can layout some of Tara's suggestion for time management across a week. I might go give it a try with Tara's ideas.

I have a question (not about the topic). I would like to go abroad for my graduate (PhD) studies. Do you have ANY pointers for a foreign student (how not to annoy a supervisor, not being familiar with how things work abroad, how to make a good impression on someone who has never seen you before)? I take it that it's tough for supervisors to work with students that came ,,across the globe" to study, so the point of my question is: what to do, to make that experience as painless as possible for both student and supervisor? Tara, you really are an inspiration. I could listen to you read a phone book and it wouldn't be boring. Thanks in advance
