Welcome to your mock... Let's run an oral examination through the vlog. I will ask clusters of questions to guide you through the process. Be afraid - the examiner is in the building...
All these questions are actually really practical for writing a thesis, the Introduction, Methodology, Discussion. Also Tara, thank you for modeling how a good examiner could behave and the valuable questions to ask. I think new Faculty members who are clueless about their roles as thesis examiners will greatly benefit from this video!
I successfully defended my thesis last week. I can confirm that these questions are really good questions to go through as you prepare for the oral examination. The tricky thing is though that everyone's thesis is unique and hence the questions you may get will vary widely depending on a.) your precise topic and field of study and b.) the expertise and research focus areas of the examiners. Examiners tend to ask application-type questions based on their own frame of reference. It is hard to prepare for those types of questions, other than to just be calm, listen carefully, and ask for clarification if needed. With these questions though, there are not necessarily a right or wrong answer, so as long as you can argue your point well when answering such questions, you should be okay. Good luck!
Thanks Dean Tara, scary as hell. But strangely enough the batch of questions on design, methodology, ethics was the easiest for me. I’ve got my ontology and epistemology pinned down.
'And as a sideline - just checking - what IS Theory?' - What a terrifying hint that all is not well with the methodology. Brilliant and useful, as ever.
