Lance and Stacy rasgulla in a tin can is the same as eating a frozen​ pizza sitting in the refrigerator for days, the texture,taste everything changes from the freshly made ones.

You have to get the bread/styrofoam image out of your head or you'll set yourself up for that. That said, and as others have said, it's actually supposed to be a spongy like texture. You should first try other similar sweets with that texture that will familiarize you with that texture. Once you get past that, then you'll either like the taste. Or not. It should ooze out with that syrup and yes, it is very sweet. Gulab jamun is a safer bet that most westerners like. That is more like a doughnut soaked with syrup. With all these desserts, they have hints of rose, cardamom etc. Cardamom to Indians, is what cinnamon is to americans. Sadly, it's expensive. A small bottle at Walmart will run you $10. Saffron is another ingredient used in Indian sweets. You'll find that in Walmart too and just a few strands of it cost a lot. It's those notes that are the signature taste in some sweets. I don't blame you on the fennel thing. I detest it, but my family/friends/most ppl like it. There are several variations of that without fennel and with different nuts. The best are fresh sweets that are dairy based, from famous sweet shops and they have a shelf life of 3 days or so. Those are to die for.

Rasagulla is a dessert, not a snack. Shops in India typically say you have to consume it the same day you buy it.

If anyone offers you canned rosogolla, expect that it will not be good. Its a sweet which should be consumed fresh.

And buy Rasgulla fresh if you want to try it. Don't judge Indian food with packed and preserved products.
