One might think that it’s going to be easier the second time they decide to leave, unfortunately its not, if anything Its more difficult, anyway that was the case for me.
the vlog is shorter this week I spent most of my time with my family, enjoying their company and just getting a little rest while I filmed.

I was watching a documentary on Hutterite life, and one of the elders of the community said something that truly moved me. He said, “From the cradle to the grave your taken care of, and you will never be alone in a time of need.” I will never forget that.

@@Lauren-vd4qe - Every family, community, state, & country has rules one must live by to remain a member. You could go live alone in the woods to try and have complete freedom to do whatever you want, only to find the rules of God and nature are even there. The point of life is not to indulge your every want, but to learn to submit to what is good and right and just (God). I spent 50 years doing what I wanted, grasping at happiness, and trying to be “free”, only to find out submission to God is the only true freedom that exists. It seems to me the Hutterites are doing their best to live their lives in submission to God, together as a community, and although they are imperfect just like all of us, they seem to be doing it pretty well.

I’m 59 now. When I was 24 I visited a Hutterite community for one weekend stay (I wrote to them in advance to ask if I could visit and determine if this was a life I wanted to live.) I lived the people and the way they live in community! But in all honesty, despite the lovely way they live I could not get over how cold it was there! I also thought it would be hard not to see my family back in Maryland very much if at all. Anyway, it was a beautiful community! We made food, the kids enjoyed ice skating, I watched them perform the play “Madam Butterfly”! And I had a very nice young woman stay near me and be my guide to teach me about life there. The most impressive thing was how they really live out their faith- they even made food and brought it into New York City to feed the homeless and share Jesus’ love.

Notwithstanding the recent pandemic, life for a single person in Canada or the US is lonely. Urban life lacks any sense of community. From what little I know about Hutterites, I think they have the found the 'secret sauce' for Community. Modern culture and living could learn a lot from examining this young woman's videos. Her portrayal, although light-hearted at times, of Colony life depicts values and structure to which we need to return. Please continue this work as I believe your message is timely and important. And finally, thank-you for taking the time and effort to share your thoughts and observations. May I say your maturity far exceeds that of your years. Kind regards, ..

I totally agree with you!!! I live by some apartment complexes and there are so many very young women there with 3 or 4 tiny children of several races and no husband at all. They are dragging those kids out all hours to the store. And that's occuring thousands of other places!!! Society is breaking down.

I have been watching many of your videos. I am JUST fascinated! I have always been fascinated by Hutterited, but, particularly as I get older. In my 20's I felt such a strong desire to spread my wings, think deep, rebellious thoughts, being spontaneous. The older I get, I appreciate a simple, quieter life. I am comforted by boundaries and predictable routines. I wish I'd understood the value of these things when I was growing up on a small acreage in Alberta. What I saw as boring, I now view as peaceful. I often see Hutterites at my local Value Village and I smile if they look at me, but they are usually chatting with each other. Thank you, for allowing us all into your beautiful reality. It is just lovely. You are proof to young people everywhere that maturity is not gained from seeing and experiencing the whole wide world. It comes from self-discipline and faith and humility before God.

I watched a documentary made in 1984 about a Hutterite community and the people lived a more austere life. Their homes were very simple, a few bedrooms, and in the living room just a table and wooden chairs, no sofas , no indoor plants , none of the patchwork quilts. I wondered if the sewing room is used by all the women in the community. Do you make all the clothes including mens trousers and under garments? Do the children go to high school now or just an primary school education?

I think your videos are great, and very helpful to your community, as they humanize the Hutterite movement, and show that people are just people however they live. And they lead me to ask a whole bunch of questions! Topics for many videos! 1. Evidently you have private spending money, given all your video equipment. How is money allocated in the colony? Are you paid for your work for the community? 2. Also evidently, not all meals/snacks are consumed in the communal dining rooms - you have kitchens, make pies, etc. What meals are eaten in common and which in your private homes? Is your private food purchased outside the colony, or distributed by it? 3. Women's clothing: I understand that you cover your heads because of the passage in 1st Corinthians. But why do you all wear black scarves? Why not different colours and styles of headress, especially given that you wear very colourful dresses. Do they perhaps symbolize membership in the community? Do you ever discuss this issue? Also, you all wear the same style of dress, over the same style of blouse. Why is this? I understand that loose clothing is required for modesty, but there are very many style of full-length, skirted, modest clothing for women. Again, do you ever discuss this question? I know that this is a lot of questions for you, but I am most interested, and I have many more questions! Good for you for allowing those of us outside of your community to get a glimpse into your life - it is very good PR for the Hutterites!

Any family? Can you still interact with them even though they no longer live on the colony? And when you get baptized can you still leave the colony?

I can answer this question if Giselle doesn't mind. When I was 24 years old and very new here in Canada I was hired as a nanny, the Hutterite girl I was replacing was leaving, she said she needed to go back to her colony. She was working as a nanny at same house hold we were in for only 3 months. She was wearing a pair of shorts inside the employer's house while she was giving me an orientation, I was wearing a pair of jeans I wasn't comfortable showing my legs even inside the house 😁 (I was 24 years old)

I know I'm late to the Q&A here but just in case you're still monitoring older videos....I'm curious to know if when you left the Colony you had the intention of returning, and if you had a time period in mind for experiencing things outside. Or if your experiences made you realize how messed up the world outside Hutterite Colonies really is, or in other ways made you appreciate the truly incredible life you had back there. Whatever the case though, I have a great deal of respect for you both for having left and for returning. You're a pretty amazing person, and your videos are absolutely inspiring on many levels. You are allowing strangers to ride along with you on a journey most of us could not fathom. Your genuine nature comes through very clearly as does your compassion for others. A couple of questions for you…when you leave the colony are you allowed to see your family while you are living off the colony? Do Hutterites shun people like the Amish? When you leave the colony and work outside the colony do you dress as a Hutterite or do you wear “English” clothes? When you were working off the colony you earned a paycheck and you controlled your own money. Is it hard going back to where you don’t earn your own money to do with as you wish? I’m sorry this is so many questions. A few more. Are you allowed to decorate your houses any way you wish and with any colours you want or do you have certain colours that are only allowed? I noticed a lot of neutral decor in the houses you show. I loved the sleeves on the blouses you made. They were beautiful! I notice you don’t ever wear any long sleeved blouses under your dresses. Why is that? You live in a cooler climate. Also long sleeves would keep the sun off your arms while working in the garden. Are you allowed to wear wide brim hats over your shawl head covering while working in the gardens to keep the sun off your face and protect your skin? We have wide brimmed hats to protect us from skin cancer. Thank you for your wonderful vlogs and for reading this comment! God Bless you!

Thank you, for this again my friend.You actually answered my question about women and mens rolls(jobs etc). I am the woman musician/drummer friend covered neck down in tattoos that follows you and asked for advice when people get intrusive or leave mean comments.And the more i think about it seeing how everyone wants to know what your tattoo means.The more i feel the meaning is none of any of our business.I dont tell everyone what my tattoos mean either.So to everyone asking Maybe her tattoo is not a thing she wants to include period so respect that.
@kkittycatkat1990
@kkittycatkat1990 3 года назад
I would kindly like to offer a different perspective. I feel that tattoos are a form of art and each are specific to that person just as an artists work changes and evolves so does the tattoos one chooses to display on their body. This being said, when people draw or even purchase a piece of art, they display it and certainly expect to be asked about the pieces & the story of each. I feel like it is in this way that it is absolutely appropriate to ask what you have decided to present on your body to the world and at the same time it is perfectly acceptable to refuse to explain certain tattoos for personal reasons or all of them in a simple & kind manner. Understanding what others see as your meaningful art being permanently etched on your body is definitely going to invite curiosity because it is essentially your art. Generally people are very proud of most of their tattoos when they get them even if the feeling changes later. I hope this makes sense and I have no tattoos so I for sure understand why people ask. We also understand if someone declines to share the story. I find in person people generally know you pretty well to feel comfortable enough to ask the meaning. On social media things definitely change as you are putting your life out there world wide so people feel a connection to creators & feel it is okay to ask. I think most v every one would understand if it was something explained as personal but on a platform like this everyone with tattoos will keep being asked about their "art". Gee I hope that made sense.
@lauraderig5056

@@kkittycatkat1990 I think you made perfect sense! :) II may have worded my above post differently than what I was trying to get across.I am very proud of all the tattoos I have.They are definately a form of expressive art to me. I gladly show (most) of them to anyone who asks.But some are complete themes (such as left side of my body is an aquatic under the sea theme including a half woman half octopuss) so it leads into areas of my body I'd rather not expose to or explain their meaning to strangers.I was only try to convey that if and when she wants to talk about her tattoo, she either will, or she wont. I absolutely understand and completely respect your point of view.And thank for your response.Especially if I worded the point I was trying to get across weirdly.Hahaha

@@kkittycatkat1990 I had a former life and I have a current life. My tattoos are from my former life, and I don’t like talking about my former life. But the tattoos are visible and permanent, as some attempts at removal haven’t worked as hoped and the rest would be too expensive. They’re a part of my story, but I only tell my story where and when I want to, and to whom I want to? Just having them isn’t an invitation to demand that info of me or anyone? If we want to share, we will, just having them doesn’t give rights. I assume Giselle left at some point, and that’s when it happened, we all have stories and just b/c we share some doesn’t mean we have to share them all! I’d be careful about asking about tattoos, becaUse you never know, and always accept if someone declines to share.

Well, here’s a new question. Do you have a romantic partner, or a significant other you are interested in? If not, what happens if you find someone to form a pair bond with? Does your chinch take a part in the match, or do you all choose for yourselves? Also your colony is quite small, are there partners available for you there who you aren’t related to? Or do one of you have to leave your own colony to find a mate?pretty personal questions, but it would be interesting to know how it works for you.

The blouses are lovely, I also enjoy sewing, but I was curious why you went to another colony, albeit your aunt/cousins, to make up blouses? Because I think I remember you making some blouses at your own colony. And thank you for the explanation about leaving although I do agree with another person‘s comment that it was rather vague. How long were you away each time? You never said. A month? Two months, six months? The shorter the time, the less time you would be able to acclimate, for better or worse. And did you enjoy wearing different clothes? Did you wear pants and did you enjoy it? Did you go out to eat in different restaurants with different kinds of food? Did you ever go to a bar have a drink? And what about watching TV and going to the movies or going dancing somewhere? If you never did any of those things, and only worked and came home, I can understand it wouldn’t be much different or fun and only lonely. I think your life on the colony is comforting, safe, and sweet, but I would love to show you other parts of the world and experiences, even if you stay in your colony. I just don’t think that you’re totally fulfilled there, though your life is good and full in some ways.

What was the reaction of the colony and leadership when you left and returned the second time? Was there a "probationary" time period when you returned? (ie: were you closely watched, had tight restrictions, etc.). Can or does anyone outside the colony join and become a Hutterite? Can someone in the colony work outside/away from the colony yet still live in the colony? Is your family related to Zech Waldner's family from Maple Grove? If so how (uncle, cousin, etc)?

My husband was born and raised in a Manitoba colony. He left when he was 18. Im a outsider as I think yous call us. We have been married for over 39 years. I have of course been to many colonies in Manitoba to visit my husband's family and relatives. I know there are alot of Waldners in the colonies but it runs through my mind if you could possibly be related to my husband in some way. He was born and raised in Maxwell colony until he was 15, then they branched out to Souris River Colony.

One question about cooking in a home - do you supply your own ingredients, or get them from a group kitchen of sorts? if you get them on your own, does someone go shopping to town to get the ingredients. I'll keep listening to try to learn more about your group. Maybe that is already answered.

You are quite the beautiful enigma. Deep into the religion and a hard working family oriented woman. Yet that sparkle in your eye exceeds the boundaries that the colony life has put upon you. I know you well in some ways. I could have married my perfect catholic high school and grade school sweetheart. But no I left the parameters of my family and religion and chose the rebel lifestyle deep in the woods and carving out a farm and factory with far too many girls of improbable quality and upbringing. Such an adventure! But now that security of the group living looks wonderful. One can't just check on and out as it suits the self. Everything has a price and sometime the cost is too high.
