Mark is here to help update my EEW Nano 1 with the Nano 2 Upgrade kit. Let's see how it spins and look at some of the differences between the Nano 1 and 2. While I spin a 3 ply yarn with today's fiber, I will also share a story about the toy my mom wouldn't allow me to have as a kid.
Welcome to Vlogmas 2022! For 12 days in December I will open a box of fiber, read a blessing, and share some spinning tips as well as a story while we sit by the fire and spin some yarn. Grab a warm drink, some fiber, and let's get spinning!

Barbie was one reason I learned to crochet. My grandmother had binders (huge 3 inch full size) jam packed with fancy crochet laced wedding and ball gowns for barbie size dolls. We couldn't afford to buy the collector's versions with the huge fancy dresses, so I learned to read the patterns to make my own. I love when Mark joins you! He's so much fun, and it's obvious the pair of you are perfect for each other!

The idea of making barbie clothes from scratch is so sweet ^-^ my mom's sewing machine was always broken and we could rarely afford to buy fabrics and most clothes we outgrew were donated to cousins or thrift shops for vouchers. I made barbie clothes out of rags and socks that lost their matches. I think i had a skipper and i made her a nightgown out of a blue bobby sock with lace, and there was another doll i made a hoopskirt for out of a t-shirt sleeve and pipe cleaners. I also remember i made barbie shoes out of notebook paper and glue but i can't remember how

My grandma bought a Singer treadle sewing machine for my 9th birthday. My mom taught me how to sew Barbie doll clothes on it. I went crazy making so many outfits for my huge Barbie collection. I even sewed little bikinis, panties, and bras. My Aunt and I played with our Barbie dolls from sunup to sundown all summer long!

I have a Story about my childhood! So.....My dad was an Engineer. My Mother had Madame Alexander Dolls, and they stayed in the BOX! I was not allowed to have Barbies either. All my friends had them. I had Nuts and Bolts and built my first bookshelf at 7 yrs old in the Garage. Fortunately my Mother Counteracted all the Engineering and Science with Ballet, Gymnastics, Violin, and Sewing, Knitting, and Crocheting! I had a Very Active Mind, that they needed to keep busy! I never had a Free Moment! haha I am happy now that I didnt have Barbies, my favorite toy growing up ended up to be the Simon, and the Rubik's cube. Good thing I had the Balance of using my hands for Creative Projects! I now own a Yarn Shop!!! Whoooo Hooooooooo!!!!!! hehe

I was the same as you, I had some trains and trucks, blocks, Mechano and tools and also ran and built scenery for my Dad's model railway. One toy that was frowned upon that my friends had was Girl's World which was a doll head that you could style and put make up onto, now I can really appreciate why I didn't have those. I did have a couple of Sindy dolls, but many of the clothes were made by either Mum, or a friend of my Mum's, there were even knitting patterns available in the UK. I still have my toy Panda, Patsy that I have had since I was two, but many of my other toys were given to a neighbour's kids after I left home.

I loved hearing how you and your mom both designed outfits for your Barbies! The majority of mine were hand-me-downs from the 70s and 80s (my new ones were 90s) and on a couple of them, my grandma had crocheted outfits in lace style crochet thread. That was all well and good except she crocheted them ON the Barbies around their tight waists, so it was impossible to change their outfits and it drove me nuts because I didn't want wedding dress Barbie every single time I played. Bratz came soon after, and I remember recycling materials to make outfits on them, like one was a white plastic bag that I made into a layered form-fitting asymmetric tube dress that looked so cool. I would also change their makeup and eye colour with Crayola markers because it was washable. I wish I'd taken the time to learn more about sewing and crochet/knit tho because I really liked fashion during peak 00s style.

What fun to watch you and Mark together! Your story of growing up sparked memories for me; I was born in 1950, so remember Barbie's "entrance". I had 2 younger brothers, and loved their sets of blocks, mechano sets, etc. When I was 9, my Xmas wish was a chemistry set; I had visions of myself becoming a mad (female!) scientist. Santa did bring me one, but it also came with a manual, and rules. My Dad loved this chemistry set, and I loved the time I spent with him following those rules. I didn't become a mad scientist, but an elementary teacher, and spent most of my teaching career exploring more effective ways to help my students (and colleagues) understand math, as well as the history of counting systems in other cultures. Yup - a weird adult and teacher!

Yay a vlogmas episode with Mark again. His catmas sweater is so cool! I enjoyed your Barbie story and how your mother made sure that first you learn that a girl can do anything in life. So wonderful! I remember when I got my first Barbie as a kid. I grew up in the very eastern part of Germany behind the wall and there was not much luxury. So having a Barbie was way out of my reach. My grandma had relatives in Austria and was permitted to travel outside the country to visit her family. When she came back my sister and I knew there would be fancy chocolates and all the sweets we normally would not be able to get our hands on. But not only brought she candy back home she gifted each of us our very first Barbie doll. It was a Tennis Barbie. I can still recall the feeling that I had when I saw the signature pink box… oh my. After that she knit us Barbie clothes of course. 😅

I had a Christmas present that I really wanted. It was an easy bake oven. I got up Christmas morning and there was an easy bake kitchen that had a little blender on it. I was happy to have it, but also disappointed that I didn't get the oven. Talk about ingratitude 🤪 Well, as I unwrapped the rest of my Christmas presents, there was an easy bake oven from my mom and dad! Years later I found out that one of my brothers had been snooping and saw the oven, so my parents had to make a present swap for what Santa was going to bring! Anyhow, I did love my easy bake oven, but it was one of those presents that quickly went unused. I do love to bake though! And I do bake frequently!

Oh my gosh! I'm still laughing at Mark with the fiber reveal & in the blooper reel. He is a fantastic "fiber wing man"/wheel Daddy. I DID have Barbies..lots of them and many accessories. I learned to crochet at 7, so I could make clothes for my dolls. Except for the spirograph, I can't recall many, if any STEM toys growing up...and yet, here I am today, a state Public Health Virologist supervising the clinical Serology/Virology testing through a global pandemic. I was not encouraged to pursue the hard sciences, I was encouraged to develop my talents, wherever they presented themselves and my passion was found in the laboratory. Nowadays, I am finding enjoyment and passion in exploring the OTHER side of my brain, through expanding fiber arts. I think it's a wonderful thing that we can exist in BOTH worlds and find ourselves extremely happy in either.

Yay, it's a Mark episode! I love all of the episodes, but the ones with Mark in make me laugh. :) I loved Rainbow Brite. And My Little Pony. I also had a significant unicorn collection! I had many, many Barbies, but I remember when I was in fourth grade deciding that I wanted to have something that was marketed to boys, so I told everyone to buy me GI Joe stuff for Christmas. And I got all GI Joe stuff, and only GI Joe. It was of limited enjoyment for me--I really did like the clothing I could make and world-building that I could do with Barbie--but I really remember the gendered consternation of my family that year... "but that's for boys!"

It was so fun watching you and Mark together! I may have been the opposite of you as a kid. I was given dolls and Barbies, but I wasn’t interested in any of them. I genuinely tried to be, but like most autistics, I preferred animals to dolls. My twin sister LOVED her dolls, and I felt so out of place not sharing the feeling. Now, as a mom, I try to follow my kid’s lead on what toys they gravitate to.

I will try again seeing that there is more of it in my Vlogmas box. I did get a Barbie, for my 9th birthday. Then I got a Midge for Christmas when I was 11. My mom was a seamstress and she taught me to sew so I could make my dolls clothes. By the time I was 16 I was making my sister's Barbie doll clothes and as birthday gifts for her friends.

My favorite Barbie story is about how I got my Barbie got her second "husband." I didn't have a Ken doll so at first Barbie married 5 Lego men stacked on top of each other. One day my brother sent his GI Joe on a parachuting mission. Unfortunately, Joe's parachute failed to deploy. He lost both of his legs in the accident. Luckily Barbie was there for him. My brother learned a good bit about parachutes and gravity and I got a proportional husband for my Barbie.

Hi Jillian, this was another enjoyable episode. It was hilarious seeing the two of you interacting! When I was younger I would put an equal amount of “boys toys” and “girls toys” on my wish list, but would inevitably only get girl things. I was close to a boy cousin that had awesome toys that I liked playing with (when he would let me) and I’d imagine what it might be like to have a remote controled anything or race track of my own. When I was a bit older I decided to only put boy things on my list, and I finally got a k’nex set. It was one of my most favorite gifts and I made everything in the booklet. Then, I got creative and started making things for my Barbie dolls (which I also really enjoyed) 😄

We need more guest appearances with Mark!! Also, I loved your story today - I grew up with both Barbies, Bionicles, and GI Joes so had a wide range of creative toys to play with. While the whole body image issue with Barbie makes sense in theory, I never once thought about it while playing with them. All of my toys had such a wide range of body shapes (like stuffed toys) and all that mattered was the story my siblings and I created with them! As for the fiber, short staple bouncy fibers are my FAVORITE!! Give me all the Down breeds! Thank you for including them in your videos and introducing people to these breeds to try!

I will say this about my folks, nothing we had was specific to boy or girls. We girls grew up playing with Barbies, babies, and Tonkas…… and so did the boys. The girls turned into independent, confident women, that have no fears about doing things that are designated as “masculine” activities, and the boys are wonderful fathers.

You and Mark are so cute together!!!!!! He has the best sense of humor!!! Ok...I had to edit to add some things..lol...even from a really young age as I was looking through the Sears Christmas Catalog....( how darn old am I?????)....I would always circle anything that looked craft related...of course I had to have the potholder weaving thing.....makes me laugh at how I had no idea I had a fiber related obsession that I would never outgrow! That was such a great story! The bloopers were priceless!!! You should include them more often!! They were a great addition to an already great Vlogmas!

We had barbies growing up. My Baba taught me to sew clothes for her which really influenced me to do hand stitching, embroidery, knitting and crochet 😊

Loved The Wheel Daddy Podcast. He is such good value and it’s so lovely to watch you two together. I would sign up my husband for a Wheel Daddy Training Programme.

That is so cool that you still have your old dolls! I loved my barbies! I wanted a Chatty Cathy doll so bad and never did get one. But I had lots of troll dolls! My favorite!

The electric spinning wheels seem so small compared to the lovely spinning ones, I love that you would be able to take one with you on holiday somewhere!

Never knew there were so many different types of spinning wheels I'm going to look into this one to see about the battery pack and see how well that will work to travel with but I can't wait to see more.

Ahhh ! I want to get a nano. I hear that changing the ply direction can make it better for crochet and I'd like to experiment with that, as well as trying diff techniques for sock yarns :D So glad they are back in stock

I had an original Barbie, don't know what happened to it. Mine had strawberry blonde hair with the ponytail. My my mother couldn't sew a button yet she did try to make clothes for our Barbies. My dad however was able to sew & actually made my sister a coat to match her prom dress. Funny how those memories stick, fortunately I do have that sewing machine.
