VLSM subnetting - subnetting a subnet
In FLSM subnetting, all subnets are of equal size with an equal number of host IDs. In VLSM subnetting, different subnets can be of different sizes. This type of subnetting method is considered “subnetting a subnet”. VLSM subnetting makes more efficient use of a given ID range.
Today I will demonstrate in detail how VLSM subnetting works.
Here is the question.
The network consists of three local area networks: LAN 1, LAN 2, and LAN3. These three LANs are connected with three serial links: Link A, link B, and link C. With an ID range - 192.168.4.0/24, please design an IP plan for the network using VLSM.
Subnetting is simple

Thanks for the last three videos about subnetting. They were outstanding. I got an understanding of the mechanics of subnetting and VLSM from Jeremy's IT Lab CCNA videos. But trying to calculate by hand w/o a calculator is a pain in the ass and time consuming. Especially when you're going to take a timed test like the CCNA! I knew there was someone out there that had a method I could understand easily. Thank you so much, Sunny. "Subscribed"

Thanks a lot sunny, you made it so easy for me to understand with your cute accent. But, i didn't get the last bit when you chose 4 instead of 2 in sunny table for the serial links. Why you didn't select the 2 ? each serial link needs only 2 hosts ID.
@patryk2700
@patryk2700 3 года назад
While 2 is theoretically possible, 4 nodes is the smallest usable network. Remember, you need a network ID (that's 1 of 2) and a broadcast ID (that's 2 of 2), no room for other hosts. A network of 4 will give you both a network ID (1 of 4) and a broadcast ID (2 of 4) and still leaves you with two nodes to use (3 of 4 and 4 of 4), to create links in this example .

just wanted to point out the routing protocol RIP version 2 is needed for CIDR. In most cases the use of VLSM is reserved for very large networks. A clas C network properly routed would be enough to satisfy most needs. I suppose trying to change to CIDR would cause serious disruptions to any company so this should be considered during network design I have CCNA I-IV and your lecture was outstanding

@KeytarArgonian
@KeytarArgonian 3 года назад
@@erichclaros9329 you just use more of the network portion as a host portion. So something like a /16 (roughly I’m not working it out) subnet mask would net you 65,000 odd hosts. But obvs you are left with less potential subnets. You are borrowing less host bits than a /24. And you wouldn’t have to subnet down, subnet down per host bit to end up with 32. You’d use whatever prefix is for the 32 host subnet mask but you’d just have thousands of subnets all able to hold 32 hosts. I think I have that right anyway 😅
