So you are ready to take the Overlay Segment Plunge but don't know what a VMware NSX-T / NSX Logical Switch or Segment is.. This is part 1 of a two part series, discussing Overlay Networks, BUM Replication, Detailed info and the Control Plane VTEP, MAC and ARP tables. We will wrap it all up with a Packet walk.. Lots of info here so get ready to have your mind blown.

Wanted to start out by saying that the way you break things down is awesome. You explain it so that even a novice can understand what's going on underneath the hood. On another note, needed to ask. When a VM is powered on and the TN that it's connected to get's the info to update the 3 tables. Does the LCP on the TN update it's own tables first with the info before sending it to the CCP or does it send the reports back to the CCP and then the CCP responds back to the TN's with the info that needs to be update/added to their tables

Thanks for watching. That a good question.. The Esxi host, maintain its own info on what VM's are hosted and what switch ports they are on.. Just like iif NSX wasn't installed.. .Hope this makes sense. Have a good one.

this is awesome! at the 25 min mark you say the destination will use the Router RT MAC but at the 47 min mark you are saying it will use the VTP's MAC?

Hello Thanks for watching.. Going to assume you meant to say the 27 min mark and not 47 min. Once the geneve frame passes through the router it will update the L2 portion of the geneve header with the appropriate src and destination mac, as shown in the video.. Hope this helps. Have a good one
